The Hebrew word translated the pleasure<\/em> (Tanakh) and purpose <\/em>(NET) was \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b5\u05a5\u05e4\u05b6\u05e5<\/a> (chephets<\/em>).\u00a0 With the Greek conjunction \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> and verb \u03b2\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) the rabbis who translated the Septuagint confirmed the originality of \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b5\u05a5\u05e4\u05b6\u05e5 (chephets<\/em>).\u00a0 The Septuagint is not particularly helpful, however, to determine whether and the pleasure of the LORD<\/em> (Tanakh) or the Lord also is pleased<\/em> (Elpenor Septuagint) was the more original intent.<\/p>\n

Here the same Hebrew word \u05d7\u05b6\u05e4\u05b0\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc\u0599 (chephets<\/em>) in essentially the same context was translated with the verb \u1f20\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) and the noun \u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 It persuades me that the translation of \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b5\u05a5\u05e4\u05b6\u05e5<\/a> (chephets<\/em>) in Isaiah 53:10 with a verb \u03b2\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) in the Septuagint was a matter of style over substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9<\/a> (yad<\/em>), translated in his hand <\/em>(Tanakh) and through him<\/em> (NET), is another matter. \u00a0So I made a table<\/a> below of all the occurrences of forms of \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3 (yad<\/em>) in Isaiah in the Masoretic text.\u00a0 Since I\u2019m interested in the negative examples, I tried to include the entire word string (including articles and prepositions) used in English or Greek to translate this one Hebrew word.\u00a0 Most occurrences were translated literally in the Septuagint with \u03c7\u03b5\u1f76\u03c1<\/a> or one of its forms: \u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c1\u1f71<\/a>, \u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c1\u1f71\u03c2<\/a>, \u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, \u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f76<\/a>, \u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>, \u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> or \u03c7\u03b5\u03c1\u03c3\u1f76(\u03bd)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One occurrence, translated \u03b2\u03c1\u03b1\u03c7\u1f77\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (arm<\/em>), I won\u2019t consider.\u00a0 There were four occurrences, I was reasonably persuaded after a cursory examination, translated as idioms rather than literally.\u00a0 At least I wasn\u2019t triggered to argue that the form of \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3 (yad<\/em>) in question wasn\u2019t original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here it appears that the rabbis collapsed of my hand<\/em> into the single word my <\/em>in the Septuagint.\u00a0 The word my<\/em>, however, was added by the English translators of the NETS.\u00a0 It does not occur in either version of the Greek clause: \u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03b9<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> (BLB), \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc7 \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03ca \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9 (Elpenor).\u00a0 The future tense\u2014I will do it<\/em> (NETS), I will act<\/em> (Elpenor)\u2014was also a choice made by the English translators.\u00a0 The Greek verb \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> might have been translated in the aorist tense<\/a> as simple \u201cpast tense.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is worth mentioning that the English translation of the Elpenor Septuagint<\/a> is not faithful here to the parallel Greek text right across the page (Table10<\/a> below).\u00a0 Between the Lord of hosts<\/em> and the word Woe <\/em>is another Greek phrase: \u1f41<\/a> \u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f71\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u1fbf\u0399\u03c3\u03c1\u03b1\u1f75\u03bb<\/a>.\u00a0 Either the mighty One of Israel<\/em> (Tanakh) or the Powerful One of Israel <\/em>(NET) could serve as a satisfactory English translation of this Greek phrase.\u00a0 And though it is absent from the BLB Septuagint, its presence in the Elpenor persuades me of its originality, even as it highlights what is missing from the Masoretic text.<\/p>\n

After Ah <\/em>(howy<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9<\/a>) or Woe <\/em>(\u03bf\u1f50\u03b1\u1f76<\/a>) there was another phrase: \u03bf\u1f31<\/a> \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> \u0399\u03c3\u03c1\u03b1\u03b7\u03bb (NETS: mighty ones of Israel<\/em>) or \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u1ffe\u0399\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bb\u1f75\u03bc<\/a> (Elpenor).\u00a0 Here again the English translation of the Elpenor Septuagint is not quite faithful to its parallel Greek, which was even more specific: to the mighty [men]<\/em> in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n
