Here, too, fear <\/em>was \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u059c\u05d0<\/a> (yare’<\/em>; Septuagint: \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 It seems important to hold on to this definition of fear <\/em>as it relates to the Lord: a heart to hear<\/a> and do<\/a> whatsoever the Lord our God shall speak<\/em>.\u00a0 This is the first moment I think I have understood the psalmist: The fear<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> of the Lord is pure, enduring for ever and ever<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Since I have read the Bible before and know that most in Israel did not have a heart to hear<\/a> and do<\/a> whatsoever the Lord our God shall speak<\/em>, my religious mind can fall from this definition of fear of the Lord <\/em>all too easily.\u00a0 It begins to substitute fear of the kind of things that happened to Israel in the power of darkness<\/a> <\/em>when they did not have the fear of the Lord<\/em>: a heart to hear<\/a> and do<\/a> whatsoever the Lord our God shall speak<\/em>.\u00a0 To make such a substitution is similar to the thinking of those who exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

And as I consider Paul\u2019s loving (Romans 9:1-5<\/a>) diagnosis of Israel\u2019s history, faith is clearly an aspect of the fear of the Lord <\/em>(Romans 9:30-32a NET):<\/p>\n

What shall we say then?\u2014that the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness obtained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith, but Israel even though pursuing a law of righteousness did not attain it<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Why not?\u00a0 Because they pursued it not by faith but (as if it were possible) by works<\/a> [Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul didn\u2019t eliminate the concept of service from the Gospel of Jesus Christ: God, whom I serve <\/em>(\u03bb\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c9<\/a>) in my spirit in the gospel of his Son<\/em>,[4]<\/sup><\/a> he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word translated art afraid<\/em> (Tanakh) and fear<\/em> (NET) in verse 19 was \u05d9\u05e8\u05d0<\/a> (yare’<\/em>).\u00a0 It was translated \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u1fc7<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), you are afraid<\/em> (NETS) and thou fearest<\/em> (English Elpenor), in the Septuagint.\u00a0 I\u2019m reasonably convinced that this is a more natural use of the word fear <\/em>(though even here it may be respect<\/em>).\u00a0 I\u2019m much less sure of the usage in verse 18.<\/p>\n

Did Moses caution Israel, thou shalt not be afraid of them<\/em> (Tanakh), because he assumed that they were afraid (yare’<\/em>, \u05ea\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u0596\u05d0<\/a>) to engage an enemy that was more numerous<\/em> (NET), \u05e8\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u059b\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (rab<\/em>)?\u00a0 Or did he command Israel, thou shalt not fear them<\/em> (English Elpenor), \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)\u2014that is, not have a heart to hear<\/a> and do<\/a> whatsoever the enemy shall speak\u2014because the people of Israel might think this enemy nation <\/em>[was] greater than <\/em>Israel (English Elpenor), \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7a<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>)?<\/p>\n
