href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>), Paul continued, <em>(for if you live according to the flesh <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>, another form of <a flesh.\u00a0 This truism is equivalent to Jesus\u2019 saying to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/\">Martha<\/a>, <em>The one who believes in me will live even if he dies <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoq.html#apoqanh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03ac\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoq.html#apoqnhskw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>),<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> or to his disciples, <em>The one who loves his life<\/em> [i.e., <em>in this world<\/em>] <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/12\/20\/christianity-part-4\/#sdfootnote13sym\">destroys<\/a><\/em> [or, <em>loses<\/em>] <em>it<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But no, I didn\u2019t see that for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I thought Paul was threatening me with eternal damnation if I lived according to the flesh, even though the text said <em>die<\/em>.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t happy about it, especially after everything else he had said, but I couldn\u2019t make any other sense of it at the time.\u00a0 And yes, it is embarrassing to keep admitting how stubbornly dull-witted I am.<\/p>\n<p>Paul continued, <em>but if by the Spirit you put to death<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qa.html#qanatoute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qa.html#qanatow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the deeds<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pra.html#praxeis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03be\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pra.html#praxis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u1fb6\u03be\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of the body you will live<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If <em>I<\/em> identify with the new man created in the image of God, <em>I<\/em> will live.\u00a0 But no, I didn\u2019t see how well this fit with Jesus saying to Martha, <em>and the one who lives and believes in me will never die <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoq.html#apoqanh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03ac\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoq.html#apoqnhskw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And I didn\u2019t relate it to Jesus saying to his disciples, <em>and the one who hates his life in this world guards<\/em> [or, <em>keeps<\/em>] <em>it for eternal life<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought it was best, if I wanted to go to heaven, to keep trying to put the deeds of my body to death by <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/27\/peters-way\/\">striving to keep the law<\/a>, or at least by striving to love by keeping the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/\">definition of the love<\/a> that fulfills the law as if it were laws.\u00a0 The idea that I could <em>put to death<\/em> <em>the deeds<\/em> <em>of the body<\/em> by faith, by believing that my <em>old man was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/15\/romans-part-25\/\">crucified<\/a> with<\/em> [Christ] <em>so that the body of sin would no longer dominate <\/em>[me], <em>so that<\/em> [I] <em>would no longer be enslaved to sin<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> because <em>God achieved what the law could not do<\/em>\u2026<em>By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh<\/em>\u2026<em>so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobdylan.com\/us\/music\/slow-train-coming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slow train coming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_led\"><\/a><em>For all who are led<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ago.html#agontai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 Surely I am a byword in heaven.\u00a0 Over and over I was led back to these verses, and over and over I refused to drink them in.\u00a0 But let me recount the word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> as used in the Gospels as a contrast to my Do-It-Yourself religion.<\/p>\n<p><em>And you will be brought<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ac.html#acqhsesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c7\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them and the Gentiles<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> Jesus told his disciples.\u00a0 <em>When<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <em>they arrest<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agwsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>you and hand you over for trial, do not worry about what to speak.<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> <em>But say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Go to the village ahead<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> <em>of you<\/em>, Jesus said.\u00a0 <em>Right away you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her.\u00a0 Untie them and bring<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agag.html#agagete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03b3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>them to me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>They brought<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the donkey and the colt and placed their<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> <em>cloaks on<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> <em>them, and he sat on them<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River and was led <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgeto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03b3\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>by the Spirit <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#sdfootnote16sym\">in the wilderness<\/a>, where for forty days he endured temptations from the devil<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So here I have Jesus <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgeto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03b3\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) by the Holy Spirit, and handed over to the devil: <em>Then<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><em> the devil brought<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1fce\u0397\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him to Jerusalem, had him<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a><em> stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, \u201cIf you are the<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><em> Son of God, throw yourself down from here<\/em>\u2026\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 An angry mob<em> got up, forced<\/em> [Jesus] <em>out of the town, and brought <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/07\/24\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-1\/#sdfootnote16sym\">the<\/a> brow of the hill on which their town was built, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/07\/24\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-1\/#sdfootnote17sym\">so that<\/a> they could throw him down the cliff<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A mob of duly authorized law enforcement types <em>arrested Jesus, led <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him away, and brought him<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><em> into the high priest\u2019s house<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Then the whole group of them rose up and brought<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>Jesus before Pilate<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" and usage of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> and ask myself incredulously, \u201cJust exactly what part of being led (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ago.html#agontai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agw.html#agw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) by the Spirit did you think was your doing, Dan?\u201d\u00a0 But I\u2019m not alone, though I might wish that I were.\u00a0 I want to take the movie \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.courageousthemovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Courageous<\/a>\u201d as my point of departure here.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, a big part of me doesn\u2019t want to do that at all.\u00a0 As an independent filmmaker wannabe I have nothing but admiration for what the <a href=\"https:\/\/kendrickbrothers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kendrick<\/a> brothers and <a href=\"http:\/\/sherwoodbaptist.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sherwood Baptist Church<\/a> have done.\u00a0 I can watch their movies without being embarrassed by the quality of the filmmaking, and each film gets better on that score than the one before.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t feel anything I\u2019m about to say while watching the film (and I watched \u201cCourageous\u201d again last night).\u00a0 What I feel is comfort, familiarity and a warm nostalgia for the religion of my childhood, my youth and beyond.\u00a0 I like stirring music.\u00a0 I want to be courageous, too. \u00a0That\u2019s part of my problem, that I only see a problem in retrospect when I analyze the story in the light of the Gospel and the religious mind.<\/p>\n<p>The storyline of \u201cCourageous,\u201d for those who haven\u2019t seen it, is about a father Adam after his daughter Emily dies in a car crash.\u00a0 She was his favorite, though he was almost as detached from her as from his son, concerned about his work and his appearance to others.\u00a0 After her death he is concerned that he should have been a better father.\u00a0 His wife reminds him that he is still a father.\u00a0 He talks to his Pastor.\u00a0 He studies the Bible.\u00a0 He begins to make a rapprochement with his son.\u00a0 So far so good.<\/p>\n<p>Then he drafts a resolution, a list of rules derived from his Bible study about fatherhood.\u00a0 He passes it out to his friends.\u00a0 Most of them, interestingly enough, are other policemen.\u00a0 He asks these policemen to hold him accountable to his list of rules.\u00a0 They want to sign it, too.\u00a0 Eventually, all the men join in a ceremony, effectively swearing an oath to abide by Adam\u2019s rules.\u00a0 It is all very moving, and courageous.\u00a0 But Adam, a churchgoing man, was ashamed of the Gospel for exactly the same reason that Paul was not.<\/p>\n<p>Paul was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/\">not ashamed<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote1sym\">gospel<\/a>, for it is God\u2019s power for salvation to everyone who believes<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote32sym\" name=\"sdfootnote32anc\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a> because <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/\">righteousness of God<\/a> is revealed in the gospel from faith to faith, just as it is written, <\/em>\u201c<strong><em>The righteous by faith will live<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote33sym\" name=\"sdfootnote33anc\"><sup>33<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Anyone might become dissatisfied with the righteousness of God that is showing through him and out into the world at any given moment.\u00a0 It is an excellent time to return to Christ, to be joined <em>to the one who was raised from the dead<\/em>, like a wife seeking to enlarge her family comes to her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/17\/romans-part-27\/\"><em>to bear fruit to God<\/em><\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote34sym\" name=\"sdfootnote34anc\"><sup>34<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is not a time to attempt to have one\u2019s own righteousness <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/\"><em>derived from the law<\/em><\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote35sym\" name=\"sdfootnote35anc\"><sup>35<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law have been alienated from <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Christ<\/a>; you have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/03\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-4\/\">fallen away from grace!<\/a><\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote36sym\" name=\"sdfootnote36anc\"><sup>36<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead of rebuking and correcting them privately, Adam\u2019s Pastor praises the men publicly for their resolution and their oath to keep it.\u00a0 Then Adam is allowed to speak to the entire congregation.\u00a0 Adam persuades other men to follow him in his defection from Christ.\u00a0 I feel this defection deeply when I get away from the movie and its rousing music, Adam\u2019s tear-filled eyes, his upraised arm and his hand grasping for something elusive.\u00a0 But my anger is restrained for two reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First, I find it extremely interesting that the character\u2019s name is Adam.\u00a0 For all I know there is a \u201cCourageous 2\u201d in the works where Adam (or Shane, but that\u2019s another story) learns to be led\u00a0by the Spirit rather than by the flesh. \u00a0And secondly, I know how much remedial help I\u2019ve needed in the sense that <em>the law was our tutor<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pai.html#paidagwgos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03b3\u03c9\u03b3\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>)<em> to bring us to Christ<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote37sym\" name=\"sdfootnote37anc\"><sup>37<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The NET has it, <em>the law had become our guardian until Christ<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/#sdfootnote38sym\" name=\"sdfootnote38anc\"><sup>38<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Neither word alone is quite right, <em>governess<\/em>, <em>nanny<\/em>, just don\u2019t say it.\u00a0 I think of Creasy, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denzel_Washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denzel Washington\u2019s<\/a> character in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Man_on_Fire_%282004_film%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Man on Fire<\/a>,\u201d taking Pita, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dakota_Fanning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dakota Fanning&#8217;s<\/a> character, to school, guarding her, protecting her, and preparing her to learn.\u00a0 He became much more than a bodyguard, but not her teacher.\u00a0 Jesus is the teacher not the law, or living by laws.<\/p>\n<p>Even those born only of the flesh of Adam bind themselves to laws, rules and ethical principles to keep from becoming complete sociopaths.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t take a prophet to see that if the Kendrick brothers\u2019 resolution fails to bring those born of the flesh and of the Spirit to Christ, Shariah is waiting in the wings.\u00a0 But it must be equally clear that the Kendrick brothers\u2019 resolution derived from the Bible is no more the Gospel than Shariah law is.\u00a0 Both are of the old way, <em>the old written code<\/em>, and neither is <em>the new life of the Spirit<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
