Mahoney<\/a> was Mom\u2019s coffee table book this Thanksgiving.\u00a0 I have a bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/#_ask\">history<\/a> with my mother\u2019s coffee table books.\u00a0 This time I even asked her if she leaves them out for my benefit.\u00a0 (She said, \u201cNo.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>I can relate to the need to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_outside\">pursue<\/a> this kind of project.\u00a0 If there is something dissuading you from believing the Bible it\u2019s best to take Jesus by the hand and hit it head on. \u00a0With a history background I\u2019m a little more inured apparently to the historical dabbling of archaeologists than Mr. Mahoney was.\u00a0 My bias toward historical documents has afforded me a measure of protection here.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mahoney\u2019s book is the companion to a film of the same name.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good film.\u00a0 He described it in an interview: \u201cIs there a pattern of evidence at any time in the archaeology of Egypt and Israel that matches the events of the Exodus and the Conquest as recorded in the Bible?\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I won\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stealing_thunder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steal his thunder<\/a>.\u00a0 He and his investors deserve to make their <a href=\"https:\/\/patternsofevidence.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money<\/a> back.\u00a0 The companion book was more detailed and much more troubling to me.<\/p>\n<p>The confessions he elicited from Jews (on camera) without torture or duress of any kind disturbed me.\u00a0 Had you asked me I would have said yes, <em>not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel, nor are all the children Abraham\u2019s true descendants<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I was clearly not prepared to have my nose rubbed in it, like some naughty puppy that has peed the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mahoney interviewed a Jewish anthropologist in his museum workroom:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Anthropologist: I always have been Jewish, I always will be Jewish, and I believe in the tradition of Judaism.\u00a0 Do I think of the Bible as the word of God?\u00a0 No (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Luke+24:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 24:25-27<\/a>), I don\u2019t\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mahoney: Do you believe that the Exodus occurred as it is written in the Old Testament\u2014do you believe it was a miraculous event with God intervening?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Anthropologist: No, I don\u2019t.\u00a0 Do I believe the event may have happened?\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 Sure I do.\u00a0 But do I believe that there was a miraculous event with God intervening?\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe it\u2026 (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Exodus+3:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exodus 3:1-22<\/a>)\u00a0 But I\u2019m <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Luke+16:31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">willing<\/a> to be shown.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He interviewed a Jewish archaeologist in the hill country of Israel.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Mahoney: So was there an Exodus?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Archaeologist1: My easy answer to you, as an archaeologist, it didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 Not in the way its written down in the Bible\u2026If we didn\u2019t have the Bible, we would never, as archaeologists or as Egyptologists, be able to say this happened\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m Jewish, and I like to sit down at a Seder meal and enjoy recounting the Exodus.\u00a0 But that\u2019s a tradition.\u00a0 That makes me who I am culturally.\u00a0 As an archaeologist, we do not see this happening as a one-off event\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down<\/em>, Jesus said to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Mark+7:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pharisees and the experts in the law<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0<em>And you do many things like this<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 actual point here was some specific legal wrangling about <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Mark+7:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corban<\/a> <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kor.html#korban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03b2\u1fb6\u03bd<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>And you do many things like this<\/em>, opens it up in my mind to the kind of mental gymnastics cited above.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mahoney interviewed another Jewish archaeologist in his workroom.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Archaeologist2: Exodus did not happen in the way it is described in the text of the Bible on the background of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> century BC\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This same pattern of <em>tradition<\/em>al thinking informed his view of the Hebrew Bible.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Archaeologist2: We are dealing with traditions (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Timothy+3:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Timothy 3:16, 17<\/a>).\u00a0 Let\u2019s say that the author of this or that part of the Hebrew Bible sits in Jerusalem.\u00a0 And people have traditions.\u00a0 Grandpa says this and Grandma says another story, and there is one tradition of this village and another tradition of that family, that clan and this tribe and so on and so forth\u2026They collected all sorts of stories, memories, myths, tales, you know.\u00a0 And they put them together in such a way that transmits an idea\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mahoney: Do you believe in celebrating Passover?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Archaeologist2: When I sit at a Passover meal and we read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/holidays\/passover\/pesach_cdo\/aid\/661624\/jewish\/English-Haggadah-Text.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haggadah<\/a> with the family, that evening, it\u2019s all history from A to Z.\u00a0 Perfect history\u2026about all those many generations of my forefathers who were sitting to the same table at Passover at the same time and reciting the Haggadah\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mahoney: What would you say to those people who are concerned with the idea that these stories didn\u2019t happen as they are written?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Archaeologist2: I would tell them that it is not important\u2026I think that it is more important to understand the meaning of Exodus, the moral of Exodus, for our civilization, for humanity, for mankind, for understanding the biblical text and the authors\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs I have mentioned before,\u201d Mr. Mahoney wrote, this particular archaeologist\u2019s \u201cwork and ideas greatly influenced\u201d a Jewish Rabbi \u201cto write his controversial Passover sermon.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Medved\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Medved<\/a> asked this Rabbi about that sermon:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Rabbi: I said that the Exodus certainly didn\u2019t happen the way the Bible depicts it, assuming that it was a historical event in any description\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Medved: Why did you say that?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rabbi: I said it for two reasons.\u00a0 One was because I knew that these students and others would go off to college and hear people talk about biblical archaeology and comparative religion, and I wanted them to know that that was not a frightening topic\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This Rabbi regarded the Exodus as fiction:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Rabbi: The extent to which the Exodus story has a historical core is very hard to say, but my deeper conviction about it is that it\u2019s a story that whether it <\/em>was <em>true, it <\/em>is <em>true.\u00a0 And those are two different things\u2026there are things that aren\u2019t facts that can be truths\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Medved: What did you want people to feel, not to think, but to feel about the Exodus?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rabbi: I wanted them to feel that their faith was unshakable, that it didn\u2019t matter what the conclusions were of archaeologists, scientists and historians\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Medved: What does [Passover] mean if we weren\u2019t delivered from Egypt?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rabbi: Whether or not people were delivered then, does that affect my ability to empathize with what slavery is like now?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Mahoney interviewed a Jewish politician in the Knesset who seemed to echo the Rabbi\u2019s emphasis on slavery:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Moses was the greatest revolutionary of all time.\u00a0 Remember that in antiquity there were grand empires that were based on one principal: slavery (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Deuteronomy+15:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deuteronomy 15:12-18<\/a>).\u00a0 Moses challenged that twice.\u00a0 He challenged it by taking his people, who were slaves in bondage in Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+8:34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freeing<\/a> them, and taking them to their promised land.\u00a0 But Moses also challenged the empires of the world by providing a moral code for mankind that said it is not the king or the emperor who decides the law.\u00a0 There is a higher law (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Deuteronomy+17:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deuteronomy 17:18-20<\/a>).\u00a0 These were absolutely revolutionary ideas.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the reason given for celebrating the Passover was: <em>for in this selfsame day have I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> <em>a feast to HaShem<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> then staying home to celebrate it \u201cto empathize with what slavery is like now\u201d is almost as disobedient as going out and doing something else instead. [<b>Addendum<\/b> 1\/12\/2026: I was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/01\/12\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-2\/#_reminder\">reminded recently<\/a> that the keeping of the Passover <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2012%3A42&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>throughout their generations<\/i><\/a> is a promise established by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Timothy%202%3A11-13&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the faithfulness of God<\/a> rather then archaeologist in his teaching lab.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Archaeologist3: \u2026as I used to tell my students, archaeology is about 10 percent data and 90 percent interpretation.\u00a0 And this is why I\u2019d say it is controversial in many aspects and open to different opinions\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This confession proved to be more important than it appeared at first.\u00a0 Mr. Mahoney, a filmmaker, did an admirable job of demonstrating from archaeological data and a few documentary fragments where the events of Exodus in the Bible fit sequentially into that archaeological data.\u00a0 He went on to demonstrate that Jewish archaeologists (among others) reject this correlation in favor of their own interpretations of the data.\u00a0 In other words, they reject the Hebrew scriptures to cling to their faith in their own <em>works<\/em>, their own interpretations as archaeologists.\u00a0 You can\u2019t make this stuff up.<\/p>\n<p>The interview continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Mahoney: You believe the Exodus and the Conquest are legendary stories?\u00a0 You don\u2019t see them in the archaeology, is that right?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Archaeologist3: No, we don\u2019t see them at all.\u00a0 We see something different.\u00a0 Many times people tell us absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but the point is, as I used to say, paradoxically, the more information we have on biblical matters, the more contradictions we\u2019ve found\u2026we have hundreds of sites now of different periods and millions of objects which indicate an archaeological reality.\u00a0 And this reality says the Israelites did not come from outside the land of Canaan.\u00a0 They did not conquer the land.\u00a0 They simply evolved from within the local community to a new phase of economic and social organization, which later developed into the state of Israel.\u00a0 So, the process was entirely different than described in the Bible\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Exodus story is a very important and interesting legend about the people of Israel, but it has no real historical basis\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So Israelites are merely Canaanites with delusions of grandeur?\u00a0 Why do I, a natural born Gentile Christian turned atheist, have more confidence in the Hebrew scriptures than a Jewish anthropologist, Jewish archaeologists, a Rabbi or a Jewish politician?\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Corinthians+3:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/25\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-8\/#_draws\">dragging<\/a> me out of my Gentile-Christian-turned-atheist-ness to Himself (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+12:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 12:32<\/a>).\u00a0 His own confidence in the Hebrew scriptures directed his actions toward their fulfillment: <em>How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> He asked Peter.\u00a0 Does this mean that I am inspired to faith by Jesus\u2019 faith?<\/p>\n<p>Well, okay, sure.\u00a0 But I\u2019m also inspired to courage, determination and some faith at the climax of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avengers:_Endgame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avengers: Endgame<\/a> when Captain America (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chris_Evans_(actor)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Evans<\/a>), bruised, fallen, all but defeated, tightens the strap of his broken shield on his arm and stands again to face Thanos (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josh_Brolin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh Brolin<\/a>) and his armies, alone if necessary.\u00a0 The trouble with this kind of inspiration is that it can only awaken the courage, determination or faith already latent within me.<\/p>\n<p>In Jesus I am <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+3:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">born from above<\/a><\/em> and <em>filled with<\/em> his own <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+2:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holy Spirit<\/a><\/em> just as <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+14:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He promised<\/a>.\u00a0 My faith is not my faith<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> but his (<em>it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>), the same faith that flowed into and through Him from the same Spirit when He asked: <em>How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?\u00a0 <\/em>Jesus also said, <em>Do not be afraid<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a> <em>of those who kill<\/em><a body<\/em>.\u00a0 This is not to say that an individual archaeologist is incapable of murderer, just that archaeologists as archaeologists have no authority beyond the grades handed down in their classrooms.\u00a0 The entire field of archaeology, that interpretive work of archaeologists, is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Social_Construction_of_Reality#Social_everyday_reality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finite province of meaning<\/a>\u201d relative to the \u201cparamount reality\u201d of most people\u2019s everyday lives.\u00a0 Most people are unlikely to hear, in fact most people do not hear, about most of the interpretations of data uncovered by archaeologists, unless those interpretations prove useful to Satan, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Revelation+12:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who deceives the whole world<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Given the limited authority archaeologists actually have over others it may seem like overkill to apply Jesus\u2019 prohibition to them: <em>Do not be afraid<\/em> <em>of <\/em>archaeologists.\u00a0 But I actually agree with the Rabbi that archaeology is \u201cnot a frightening topic.\u201d \u00a0When I understand Jesus\u2019 prohibition as a negation of the definition I gleaned from <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/11\/29\/fear-deuteronomy-part-16\/\">Deuteronomy<\/a> of the <em>the fear of the Lord<\/em>\u2014Do not have a heart to hear and do whatsoever archaeologists shall speak\u2014I am free to choose what I will hear with what measure of faith.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in archaeology should take the Jewish archaeologist\u2019s instruction to his students to heart: \u201carchaeology is about 10 percent data and 90 percent interpretation.\u201d\u00a0 Every student is free to distinguish that germ of data from the mass of interpretation and judge that interpretation accordingly, based on all that student\u2019s knowledge, including the Bible as the word of God.<\/p>\n<p>Answers to test questions in school are not assertions of truth a student must believe.\u00a0 They are simply a measure of a student\u2019s proficiency taking notes and repeating what a teacher has said.\u00a0 A student is not forsworn by recalling what a teacher has said and writing it down accurately on a test.\u00a0 All rights to one&#8217;s own thoughts and beliefs are fully retained, even after an archaeology test.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeology, archaeologists\u2019 interpretations of archaeological data, is no reason to let Satan rob you of your opportunity to <em>know<\/em>\u2026<em>the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom<\/em> [He] <em>sent<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/12\/19\/patterns-of-evidence-exodus\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a> to be <em>born from above<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+3:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 3:5-7<\/a>), to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+2:38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receive<\/a> <\/em>his Holy Spirit, to be bouyed up and carried along by a continuous stream of God\u2019s own <em>love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_ftn22\">gentleness<\/a> and self-control<\/em><a
