Part 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M*A*S*H_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M*A*S*H<\/a> Major Frank Burns (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Duvall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Duvall<\/a>) is introduced on his knees at his cot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Xw1WhL9D09c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praying aloud<\/a>.\u00a0 At sixteen I thought he was some kind of super-Christian.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have prayed aloud like that at church camp.<\/p>\n<p>When he yelled at Private Boone (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bud_Cort\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bud Cort<\/a>) for a lazy and inappropriate response to a direct order, it was uncomfortable, but it didn\u2019t diminish Major Burns in my estimation.\u00a0 After all, what does it mean to be \u201cunder authority\u201d if not that those in authority over you <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+20:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">berate<\/a> you as they see fit?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t particularly like it but I was used to it.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t really change my opinion of those who berated me.<\/p>\n<p>When Major Burns succumbed to his lust for Major Houlihan (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sally_Kellerman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sally Kellerman<\/a>), it was disappointing, but God punished him immediately.\u00a0 Radar O\u2019Reilly (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Burghoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gary Burghoff<\/a>) slipped a microphone into the tent where Major Burns and Major Houlihan carried on their tryst.\u00a0 Audio of it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HpmdYRs4lEs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broadcast live<\/a> to the entire 4077th camp.<\/p>\n<p><em>And know that your sin will find you out<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a> below].\u00a0 <em>You who tell others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Major Burns was sent home in a straitjacket and I was left alone at the MASH camp in Korea (actually, I was on a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/17\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-4\/\">date<\/a>) I was at a loss to figure out what this, my first <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motion_Picture_Association_film_rating_system#:~:text=Rated%20G%3A%20General%20audiences%20%E2%80%93%20All,accompanying%20parent%20or%20adult%20guardian.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R-rated<\/a>, movie was actually about.\u00a0 I had been a do-it-yourself-Christian for over ten years by then.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus may have died to forgive my sins but it was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/05\/27\/cobwebs\/#_everything\">up to me<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musixmatch.com\/lyrics\/Don-Moen\/Trust-and-Obey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trust and obey<\/a>. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Spurgeon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C.H. Spurgeon<\/a> did a fair job of describing my faith in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spurgeon.org\/resource-library\/sermons\/particular-redemption-2\/#flipbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sermon<\/a> presented, not as doctrine he believed but, as his characterization of an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arminianism#:~:text=Arminianism%20is%20a%20branch%20of,historic%20supporters%20known%20as%20Remonstrants.&amp;text=Jacobus%20Arminius%20(Jakob%20Harmenszoon)%20was,the%20Theological%20University%20of%20Geneva.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arminian<\/a>\u201d theory of redemption:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Christ, when He died, did not die with an intent to save any particular person\u2026Christ&#8217;s death does not in itself secure, beyond doubt, the salvation of any one man living\u2026Christ died to make the salvation of all men possible\u2026any man who pleases may attain unto eternal life\u2026if man&#8217;s will would not give way and voluntarily surrender to grace, then Christ&#8217;s atonement would be unavailing\u2026.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though I didn\u2019t realize it at the time I worshiped my own free will.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t carve or cast a statue, fall prostrate before it and bring it offerings.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t a sculptor.\u00a0 But I thought <em>free will<\/em> as a concept was fair.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the following diagram from a site <a href=\"https:\/\/d2y1pz2y630308.cloudfront.net\/11832\/documents\/2015\/8\/thronediagram.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16118\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a essence of my religious education.\u00a0 The explanation reads as follows: \u201cThe circle is your life.\u00a0 The seat is a throne.\u00a0 The throne stands for whatever is lord of your life.\u00a0 S is for self.\u00a0 The cross is Jesus.\u00a0 The other things in the circle represent whatever is important to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone begins at letter A.\u00a0 The goal is to work through to letter C.\u00a0 The steps are spelled out in some detail on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cru.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cru.org<\/a> online:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We must surrender, or yield, the throne to Christ\u2026.By faith we must recognize that Christ assumed control of our lives upon our invitation\u2026.We receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith.\u00a0 How then do we allow Him to control our lives moment by moment?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_punishment\"><\/a>Did I receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith at sixteen?\u00a0 Certainly not by the faith (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) that is an aspect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit<\/a> of his Spirit (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+16:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 16:12-16<\/a>).\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know of such a faith and would have considered it cheating.\u00a0 <em>By faith <\/em>meant trust and obey, acts (continuous acts) of my free will: \u201cWe must surrender\u2026we must recognize\u2026We receive\u2026we allow\u201d or God is powerless, except to punish.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t realize I was worshiping my free will.\u00a0 I certainly can\u2019t recall what I might have meant at the time by <em>free will<\/em> if I had.\u00a0 I thought I was doing, more or less, what I was supposed to be doing, except, of course, when I wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 So, what is <em>free will<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_freewill\"><\/a>As I approach it now I have a fairly clear idea what the translators of the NET think about it.\u00a0 Jesus said (John 10:18 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No one takes [<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+10:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my life<\/a>] away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will. \u00a0I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again. \u00a0This commandment I received from my Father.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here the Greek words <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ap.html#ap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> were translated <em>of my own free will<\/em>.\u00a0 This \u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 was derived from an <em>authority <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) derived from a <em>commandment <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entolhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entolh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae<\/a>) Jesus <em>received <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lambanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) from his Father.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 saying is very important to me. \u00a0I can describe it best as a contrast to me.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_endured\"><\/a>Nail me to a cross and I will stay there until you pry me down, whether dead or alive will depend on how long you leave me nailed there.\u00a0 Jesus <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Hebrews+12:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>endured the cross<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 The Greek word translated <em>endured <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upem.html#upemeinen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f73\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upom.html#upomenw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>): \u201cto remain, stay behind (while others leave); to remain (instead of fleeing).\u201d\u00a0 Jesus <em>remained <\/em>on the cross when He had other options.\u00a0 At any moment throughout that ordeal He could have exercised his <em>authority received<\/em> by the <em>commandment <\/em>of His Father, and <em>of his own free will<\/em>, said, \u201cEnough of this,\u201d and stepped down from the cross.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I\u2019ve added, \u201cand been none the worse for wear.\u201d\u00a0 I see it a little differently now: He would not be <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Philippians+2:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>obedient to the point of death<\/em><\/a>, nor <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Colossians+1:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>the firstborn from the dead<\/em><\/a> and He would be uniquely alone: <em>I tell you the solemn truth, <\/em>He said, <em>unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone.\u00a0 But if it dies, it produces much grain<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At sixteen I didn\u2019t study the Bible, didn\u2019t know I was worshiping my own free will, but I wonder if I could have accepted an <em>authority received<\/em> from a <em>commandment <\/em>of God <em>my <\/em>free will.\u00a0 Recently, I\u2019ve described <em>free will<\/em> as an ability to ignore and disobey God.\u00a0 That might be an <em>authority <\/em>derived from a <em>commandment<\/em>: I don\u2019t know but I don\u2019t cease to exist the moment I think or do anything contrary to God\u2019s word or will.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/emautou_1683.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other examples<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ap.html#ap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> to see if <em>of my own free will <\/em>would stand up to scrutiny as a translation.\u00a0 The very first example called my understanding of Jesus\u2019 free will into question (John 5:26, 27, 30):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself, and he has granted the Son authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of Man.<\/p>\n<p>I can do nothing on my own initiative.\u00a0 Just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/15\/to-make-holy-part-8\/#_ftn16\">one<\/a> who sent me <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/15\/to-make-holy-part-8\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>I can do nothing<\/em> of my own free will (\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf \u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6), seems to hold up, despite its shock value: Jesus said this after having been <em>granted <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ed.html#edwken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/did.html#didwmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)\u2026<em>authority <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>to execute <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>judgment <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_will\"><\/a>I\u2019m willing to hear an <em>authority <\/em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd) <em>granted <\/em>(\u1f14\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd) as roughly equivalent to an <em>authority <\/em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd) <em>received <\/em>(\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd) by a <em>commandment <\/em>(\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd), though that authority is not exercised here of Jesus\u2019 own free will: <em>Just as I hear<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ako.html#akouw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c9<\/a>), <em>I judge <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), <em>and my judgment<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) <em>is just<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t leave me to guess why such <em>judgment is just<\/em>: <em>I do not seek<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zh.html#zhtw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u1ff6<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zh.html#zhtew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>my own will<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), <em>but the will<\/em> (\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) <em>of the one who sent me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So is there something peculiar about <em>judgment <\/em>(\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) that placed special constraints on Jesus\u2019 <em>authority <\/em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd) to judge of his own free will?\u00a0 Or did I carry it too far before?\u00a0 Could Jesus, being Jesus, being who He is, actually of his own free will have stepped down from the cross?\u00a0 Or did He, as Jesus, <em>seek<\/em>\u2026<em>the will<\/em> (\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) <em>of the one <\/em>(KJV: <em>Father<\/em>)<em> who sent <\/em>Him?<\/p>\n<p>The next occurrence of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ap.html#ap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> sheds some more light on Jesus\u2019 attitude (John 7:16-18 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jesus replied, \u201cMy teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/15\/romans-part-12\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0If anyone wants to do God\u2019s will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority. \u00a0The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the contrasted this one to Himself, One who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him.\u00a0 It seems less and less likely that Jesus would have exercised his authority to utilize his free will to come down from the cross.<\/p>\n<p>The next occurrence of \u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf \u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 was translated <em>on my own initiative<\/em> (John 7:28, 29 sixteen.\u00a0 My knowledge of God was based on hearsay and whatever I had reasoned out through trial and error, which wasn\u2019t particularly helpful since I was asking the wrong questions and misunderstanding the answers.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_help\"><\/a>God\u2019s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is so meaningful to me now, I search for some inkling of the fruit of the Spirit in my past. \u00a0The closest I come is the vague memory of a belief that God would help me. \u00a0By age sixteen I had over ten years of empirical evidence that God didn\u2019t help me do anything I wanted to do.\u00a0 (Even after my prodigal years the fruit of the Spirit so-called was a list of attitudes I was expected to conjure and maintain out of my own gratitude for being saved from an eternity in the lake of fire.)<\/p>\n<p>At sixteen I was trying to trust and obey as continuous acts of my own free will and figure out how to abdicate the throne of my life to Christ.\u00a0 God had one role in my life: to punish me for sin. \u00a0By seventeen or eighteen, after He had \u201c<a
