href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> (literally: \u201cI the pleasing things do always\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d I ask.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t even say, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/11\/who-am-i-part-1\/#_atheism\">I <em>always<\/em> lie<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus replied.<\/p>\n<p><em>But I say<\/em>, Paul wrote, <em>live by the Spirit and you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_negation\">will not carry out<\/a> the desires of the flesh<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written that I became an <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/29\/solomons-wealth-part-4\/#_evil\">atheist<\/a> during my prodigal years.\u00a0 That is technically correct according to the definition that pops up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=atheist+definition&amp;rlz=1C1FLDB_enUS524US615&amp;oq=atheist&amp;aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0j0i433l3j46j0j0i433.7068j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a>: \u201ca person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.\u201d\u00a0 I stopped believing in my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_punishment\">god of punishment<\/a> for a few years, and I certainly didn\u2019t believe in the existence of any other gods.\u00a0 But I was by no means a practicing atheist.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_atheist\"><\/a>To become a practicing atheist is at least as difficult as becoming a do-it-yourself-Christian.\u00a0 Atheists exist in a world where God the Father is making Jesus\u2019 <em>enemies a footstool for<\/em> [his] <em>feet<\/em>;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> God the Holy Spirit is proving <em>the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment<\/em>;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> and God the Son promised to <em>draw all<\/em>\u2026<em>to myself<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The practicing atheist must be <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/11\/who-am-i-part-1\/#_atheism\">ever-vigilant<\/a> to withstand his relentless love while striving to make this world the place where the omnipresent God is not.\u00a0 The atheist philosopher <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friedrich_Nietzsche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friedrich Nietzsche<\/a> lamented, \u201cI am afraid we are not rid of God because we still have faith in grammar.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably more meaningful to say that my free will became relatively unfettered from God for a time.\u00a0 Since I didn\u2019t study the Bible in English, much less in Greek, I didn\u2019t know anything about <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_freewill\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf \u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t see the connection between <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ap.html#ap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_will\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 I was clueless that the noun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> related to the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cI want.\u201d \u00a0But with my own free will relatively unfettered from God I was about to get a crash course in <em>I want<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The following Gospel harmony provides a glimpse into Jesus\u2019 free will as <em>I little farther, he threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed,<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">Going a little farther, he threw<a possible, let this cup pass<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> <em>from me!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> He prayed according to Matthew\u2019s Gospel narrative.\u00a0 <em>Abba, Father, all things are possible for you<\/em>, Mark\u2019s Gospel narrative clarified.\u00a0 <em>Take this cup away from me<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is perfectly intelligible to me.<\/p>\n<p>I want to live, not to die.\u00a0 If I must die, I want that death to be as easy as possible.\u00a0 Viewed this way Jesus\u2019 expressed a fundamental aspect of the human will.\u00a0 But viewed in the context of his own life and words, I get a very different picture.\u00a0 He had already stated quite publicly (John 12:27, 28a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNow my soul is greatly distressed.\u00a0 And what should I say? \u2018Father, deliver me from this hour\u2019?\u00a0 No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour. \u00a0Father, glorify your name.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then privately, alone in prayer with his Father, He did exactly that: He <em>prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is so pathetically human I can hear the pre-echo of Paul\u2019s lament: <em>Wretched man that I am! \u00a0Who will rescue me from this body of death?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Jesus\u2019 prayer was more nuanced, however, than I\u2019ve made recall it being presented as a Gospel harmony.\u00a0 We were Protestant.\u00a0 Visual aids were not generally used upstairs in gownup church.\u00a0 I do remember flipping back and forth between Gospel accounts during sermons.\u00a0 That\u2019s how I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/31\/sexual-immorality-revisited-part-3\/#_harmony\">knew<\/a> they \u201cneeded\u201d harmonizing.<\/p>\n<p>As a boy I found it embarrassing, even a little disconcerting, how much Jesus feared death.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure preachers tried to explain how it wasn\u2019t a fear of death, but that just seemed like a cover for their own embarrassment over Jesus\u2019 lack of machismo.\u00a0 Besides, Jesus was so perfect, it was all going to work out okay in the that the <em>angel from heaven<\/em> didn\u2019t appear until Jesus\u2019 third prayer session.\u00a0 I placed this appearance in the second because I know what comes next.\u00a0 We are taken from a scene of Jesus <em>in anguish<\/em> praying <em>more earnestly<\/em> with <em>sweat<\/em>\u2026<em>like drops of blood <\/em>to a scene where Jesus is terrifyingly calm.\u00a0 These scenes are separated not by decades, nor years, not months, nor weeks, not even days: It was only a matter of moments before Jesus asked Peter and the other disciples: <em>How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite my attempt to add a few moments here the angel may not have appeared before Jesus prayed: <em>My Father, if this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will must be done<\/em>.\u00a0 The clause <em>your will must be done<\/em> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c4\u03c9 \u03c4\u1f78 \u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5) struck me as I consider free will in general and Jesus\u2019 free will in particular.\u00a0 The subject, <em>your will<\/em>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>.\u00a0 The NET translators chose <em>must be done <\/em>for the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gen.html#genhqhtw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>, a passive imperative form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gi.html#ginomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>.\u00a0 I laughed out loud at a passive imperative.<\/p>\n<p>It was clear that <em>must <\/em>was intended to convey the imperative aspect and <em>be done<\/em> the passive aspect.\u00a0 But I couldn\u2019t grasp whether the imperative aspect should hold sway (<em>your will must be done <\/em>by me), or the passive aspect (<em>your will must be done <\/em>to me). \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.garygagliardi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gary Gagliardi\u2019s<\/a> insight on <a href=\"https:\/\/christswords.com\/node\/477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christ&#8217;s Words &#8212; The Mysteries of Jesus&#8217;s Greek Revealed<\/a> was helpful here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The word translated as &#8220;be&#8221; means &#8220;to become,&#8221; that is, to enter into a new state. In Greek, especially as used by Jesus, it is the opposite of &#8220;being,&#8221; which is existence in the current state. It is in a form that doesn&#8217;t exist in English, the 3rd person command in the passive. In translation a 3rd person command is usually translated with a leading &#8220;let&#8221;, so &#8220;let your.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Gagliardi\u2019s translation, \u201clet your desire come into being,\u201d seemed like a perfect solution until I tried to make it more concrete with a simpler command: one in authority says, \u201cI want you to wash the dishes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cLet your desire come into being,\u201d rings true if the one under authority says it on the way to washing the dishes.\u00a0 But if the one under authority simply stands there, or sits there, and says, \u201cLet your desire come into being,\u201d I have a fairly practical demonstration of James\u2019 maxim (James 2:17 KJV):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The translation <em>alone <\/em>for the Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#eauthn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f75\u03bd<\/a> (NET: <em>itself<\/em>) seems to strengthen the connection to a later statement: <em>You see<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a> <em>that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f79\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; KJV: <em>only<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus presented this same issue to <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+21:23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>the chief priests and elders of the people<\/em><\/a> as a question (Matthew 21:28-31a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What do you think?
