This is a continuing look into Psalm 22 as the music<\/a> in Jesus\u2019 heart as He endured<\/a> the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The English translation of \u05d5\u05b0\u05bd\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e8\u05b0\u05d3\u0597\u05d5\u05bc, a form of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3<\/a> (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>), in the Tanakh (and others<\/a>) was unique and specific.\u00a0 A scan of the table<\/a> below of all occurrences of forms of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3 (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>) in the Old Testament is an easy way to satisfy myself that the form \u05d5\u05b0\u05bd\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e8\u05b0\u05d3\u0597\u05d5\u05bc is unique among them.\u00a0 But my Hebrew isn\u2019t good enough to say that \u05d5\u05b0\u05bd\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e8\u05b0\u05d3\u0597\u05d5\u05bc is so specific as are out of joint<\/em>.\u00a0 Yet it is this specificity that causes me to think of Jesus hanging on the cross: \u201cThe strain of the body suspended on the cross would all but dislocate the joints of the arms, and would be felt in every bone of the body.\u201d[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

A more contemporary translation<\/a> of the Tanakh rendered \u05d5\u05b0\u05bd\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e8\u05b0\u05d3\u0597\u05d5\u05bc were separated<\/em>.\u00a0 Would that direct my thoughts to Jesus and the cross if I had never heard are out of joint<\/em>?\u00a0 The NETS translation of the Greek \u03b4\u03b9\u03b5\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) were scattered<\/em> would have led me toward a more figurative understanding if spoken by a living person, though I may be more willing now to have taken it more literally if spoken by the dead<\/a>.\u00a0 Neither interpretation would have led me to Jesus and the cross.<\/p>\n

Between the two, were scattered <\/em>(NETS) is a more accurate rendering of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b5\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7 than are loosened <\/em>(English Elpenor).\u00a0 When I consider the forms of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u03af\u03b6\u03c9 found in the New Testament<\/a> it seems that the English translators of the Elpenor version of the Septuagint were reaching to better accommodate are out of joint<\/em>.\u00a0 There was only one other occurrence of a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u03af\u03b6\u03c9 as the translation of a form of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3 (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>) in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

It encouraged me to look more closely at how the Rabbis translated forms of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3 (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 Two forms of \u1f00\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> were chosen for the earliest occurrences in Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

If I visualize this wordstring as a map: at the point were the four rivers first part, divide or separate they might be described as dislocated<\/em>.\u00a0 Farther downstream as the rivers separate more and more they might be described as scattered<\/em>.\u00a0 Whether the rivers are dislocated<\/em> by inches or scattered <\/em>by my miles, they are separated<\/em>.\u00a0 If the Hebrew doesn\u2019t specify where we are on the map so to speak (and I\u2019m assuming from the translations cited above that it doesn\u2019t) the point between dislocated <\/em>and scattered<\/em> is an interpretation made by the translators.\u00a0 That\u2019s actually quite a lot of clarity from the first occurrence of \u05d9\u05b4\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u0594\u05d3, a form of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3 (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>) in Genesis.<\/p>\n

If I actually thought the Masoretic text was the original Hebrew inspired by the Holy Spirit I wouldn\u2019t translate \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b0\u05e4\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d3\u0599\u2014another form of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3 (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>), and dispersed<\/em> (Tanakh), and spread<\/em> (NET)\u2014as a redundant synonym of \u05de\u05b0\u05e4\u05bb\u05d6\u05bc\u05b8\u05a4\u05e8\u2014a form of \u05e4\u05d6\u05e8<\/a> (p\u0304zr<\/em>), scattered abroad <\/em>(Tanakh), that is dispersed<\/em> (NET).\u00a0 A certain people scattered abroad and<\/em> separated among the people<\/em> sounds like an authentic complaint a foreign official might lodge against Israel.\u00a0 It sounds exactly like Haman\u2019s complaint: their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’s laws<\/em>.\u00a0 So why translate \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b0\u05e4\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d3\u0599 as a redundant synonym of \u05de\u05b0\u05e4\u05bb\u05d6\u05bc\u05b8\u05a4\u05e8?<\/p>\n

There was only one verb \u03b4\u03b9\u03b5\u03c3\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) in the Septuagint: \u201cto scatter abroad, spread around, throw about, disperse.\u201d\u00a0 Whether there was only one verb in the original Hebrew or the rabbis collapsed two verbs into one, the Septuagint seems to have dictated the content of the English translations quoted above.\u00a0 The Tanakh<\/a> on chabad.org<\/a> however reads: There is a certain people scattered and separate among the peoples throughout all the provinces of your kingdom<\/em>\u2026\u00a0 This seems to be a better translation of the Masoretic text apart from any consideration of the Septuagint.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure how much weight to give it in my consideration of Psalm 22:14.<\/p>\n

There is another verse in another Psalm where \u05e0\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05a5\u05d5\u05bc, another form of \u05e4\u05d6\u05e8<\/a> (p\u0304zr<\/em>), was used apparently in a figurative way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The first three occurrences mark the bullet points of the story of Abram and Lot separating because their herds were too great for the land (Genesis 13:5-14a<\/a>).\u00a0 Here, I would need to visualize the wordstring as a digital 4D map, showing elevation and time, but the story would be the same: Abram and Lot and their herds would begin together and then separate wider and wider apart as Lot journeyed east<\/a> toward Sodom.<\/p>\n

There were four occurrences of forms of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3<\/a> (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>) translated with forms of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Since I\u2019ve been considering free will,[2]<\/sup><\/a> the oath David\u2019s Great-Grandmother (Ruth 4:13-17<\/a>) swore to her mother-in-law stands out to me.\u00a0 After the deaths of her husband and two sons Naomi had decided to return home to Judah from Moab.\u00a0 Her two daughters-in-law Orpah and Ruth began the journey with her, but Naomi encouraged them to return to their own homes.\u00a0 Orpah was reluctantly persuaded while Ruth was not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

There was a subtle shift in the translation in the Septuagint that strikes me as the influence of the religious mind: It is not that people are separated<\/em> from God with whores<\/em>, but they were associating with whores<\/em> (NETS), they mingled themselves with harlots<\/em>.\u00a0 Both are perfectly acceptable translations of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c6\u1f7b\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c6\u03cd\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>); neither hints of separation, whether dislocated <\/em>or scattered<\/em>.\u00a0 And the NET follows the Septuagint here, consort<\/em>, without any note questioning the originality of \u05d9\u05e4\u05e8\u05d3\u05d5, a form of \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d3<\/a> (p\u0101ra\u1e0f<\/em>).<\/p>\n
