Make Holy, Part 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 I want to consider is found in Jesus\u2019 prayer to his Father: <em>Set them apart<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agi.html#agiason\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agi.html#agiazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>in the truth; your word is truth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I\u2019m making a slow pilgrimage through his prayer because I believe I can <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+17:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">know<\/a> his <em>holiness <\/em>here.\u00a0 In another <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/15\/to-make-holy-part-8\/\">essay<\/a> I considered <em>your word<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#ton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sou2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>) from the continuation of Jesus\u2019 prayer (John 17:14, 15 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. \u00a0I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but that you keep them safe from the evil one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here I want to begin to consider <em>world <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kos.html#kosmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 Jesus told a parable (Matthew 13:24b-30 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe kingdom of heaven is like a person who sowed<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> good seed in his field. \u00a0But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> darnel among the wheat and went away. \u00a0When the plants sprouted and produced grain, then the darnel also appeared. \u00a0So the slaves of the landowner came and said to him, \u2018Sir, didn\u2019t you sow good seed in your field? \u00a0Then where did the darnel come from?\u2019 \u00a0He said, \u2018An enemy has done this!\u2019 \u00a0So the slaves <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/08\/15\/the-angels-will-gather\/#_ftn32\">replied<\/a>, \u2018Do you want us to go and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/04\/romans-part-7\/#sdfootnote5sym\">gather<\/a> it?\u2019 <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/04\/romans-part-7\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0But he said,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u2018No, since in gathering the darnel you may uproot the wheat along with it <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Let both grow together until<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the harvest. \u00a0At harvest time I will tell the reapers, \u201cFirst collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burned, but then gather the wheat into my barn.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus explained the parable (Matthew 13:37b-39 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. \u00a0The field is the world <em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> and the good seed are the people of the kingdom. \u00a0The poisonous weeds are the people of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. \u00a0The harvest is the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn35\">age<\/a>, and the reapers are angels <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is probably not exactly what Jesus meant when He prayed <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> \u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2 <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/emi.html#emishse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u1f77\u03c3\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c2<\/a> (<em>and the world has hated them<\/em>).\u00a0 It does provide a sense of his worldview as background: This <em>world <\/em>is populated currently (assuming the <em>end of the age<\/em> has not yet come) by <em>the people of the kingdom<\/em> and the <em>people of the evil one<\/em>.\u00a0 This is probably just about what Jesus\u2019 audience heard:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\"><em>people of the kingdom<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>people of the evil one<\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">The descendants of Israel in good standing more or less\u2026<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">Everyone else, with the possible exception of those Gentiles who made some move toward Israel\u2019s religion and\/or the law of Moses\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>But is that what Jesus meant?\u00a0 <em>You people are from your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn9\">father<\/a> the devil, and you want to do what your father desires<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> He said to his hearers in Israel.\u00a0 It highlights the fact that the word translated <em>people <\/em>in <em>people of the kingdom <\/em>and <em>people of the evil one <\/em>is actually <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ui.html#uioi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c5\u1f31\u03bf\u1f76<\/a> (a plural form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ui.html#uios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c5\u1f31\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) in Greek\u2014<em>children<\/em>, <em>sons<\/em>.\u00a0 So we tend to think:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">children<em> of the kingdom<\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">children<em> of the evil one<\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">Those who believe in Jesus, good standing may or may not be essential\u2026<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">Everyone else, with the possible exception of children\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>But who did Jesus address as children of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_life\">devil<\/a>?\u00a0 <em>Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, \u201cIf you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Were the children <em>of the kingdom<\/em> (\u03c5\u1f31\u03bf\u1f76 <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#ths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bas.html#basileias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>) synonymous in Jesus\u2019 mind with <em>the sons of God <\/em>(\u03c5\u1f31\u03bf\u1f76 <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qeou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>)?\u00a0 <em>For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We tend to analyze Jesus\u2019 sayings according to our own perceptions of the <em>world<\/em>.\u00a0 Let\u2019s add another perspective of his worldview: <em>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For the moment, it matters very little whether I believe this or not.\u00a0 He does, and its his view of the <em>world <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) I seek to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all He has taught me about being <em>led by the Spirit<\/em>, I am not 100% <em>led by the Spirit <\/em>100% of the time.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The slightest deviations from my routine can throw me out of kilter.\u00a0 Other times it seems the monotony of my routine does it.\u00a0 I appreciated the study on free will.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It helped me realize how often I still have a knee-jerk reaction that God is punishing me or has forsaken or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/02\/08\/who-am-i-part-13\/#_freewill\">abandoned me<\/a> when things aren\u2019t going according to my will.\u00a0 Recalling Jesus\u2019 prayer\u2014<em>not what I will, but what you will<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014has helped to alleviate some unnecessary concern.<\/p>\n<p>Paul wrote (Ephesians 4:22-24 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and to put on the new man who has been created in God\u2019s image\u2014in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn13\">I<\/a> will ask the Father<\/em>, Jesus said, <em>and he will give you another Advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn14\">to be<\/a> with you forever\u2014the Spirit of truth, whom the world <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<em> cannot accept because it does not see him or know <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn15\">him<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn16\">But<\/a> you know him because he resides with you and will be in you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This may be more like the <em>world <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) that <em>has hated<\/em> Jesus\u2019 disciples: the <em>world <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) of <em>the old man <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#ton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pal.html#palaion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <em>who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires<\/em> and <em>cannot <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#ou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f50<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/du.html#dunatai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/du.html#dunamai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>accept <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#labein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lambanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the Spirit of truth<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit<\/em>, Paul wrote, <em>and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn38\">for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn39\">what<\/a> you want<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this may be more like the opposition Jesus had in mind in the <em>world <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) of his parable: that opposition of the old human and the new, the flesh and the Spirit, within everyone being drawn to Jesus.\u00a0 I\u2019m taking my clue from the landowner\u2019s response to his slaves\u2019 question: <em>Do you want us to go and gather it?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No, since in gathering the darnel you may uproot the wheat along with it. \u00a0Let both grow together until the harvest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It would be easy enough for Jews to kill Gentiles or Christians to kill those who refuse to confess Christ if that is what Jesus had in mind.\u00a0 It is much more difficult to uproot the sin in one\u2019s own flesh, not to mention someone else\u2019s flesh, without doing damage to the <em>good seed<\/em>, <em>the new man<\/em> (\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kainon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd), that Christ has sown.\u00a0 Of course, at any given place at any given moment before all have been drawn to Jesus people somewhat to mostly led by the Holy Spirit might be confronted by people following their own flesh.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus had elaborated some on this topic previously (John 15:18-27 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf the world <em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> hates you, be aware that it hated me first. \u00a0If you belonged to the world <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kos.html#kosmou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>, the world <em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> would love you as its own. \u00a0However, because you do not belong to the world <em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>, but I chose you out of the world <em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>, for this reason the world <em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> hates you. \u00a0Remember what I told you, \u2018A slave is not greater than his master.\u2019 \u00a0If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they will obey yours too. \u00a0But they will do all these things to you<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> on account of my name because they do not know the one who sent me. \u00a0If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of sin. \u00a0But they no longer have any excuse for their sin. \u00a0The one who hates me hates my Father too. \u00a0If I had not performed among them the miraculous deeds that no one else did,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> they would not be guilty<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of sin. \u00a0But now they have seen the deeds and have hated both me and my Father. \u00a0Now this happened to fulfill the word that is written in their law, \u2018They hated me without reason.\u2019 \u00a0When<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father\u2014the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father\u2014he will testify about me, and you also will testify because you have been with me from the beginning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This has me thinking a little differently about a very familiar passage: <em>For God so loved the world <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kos.html#kosmon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2), that He left it exactly as it is, might be the silent hope of the old human following after the flesh.\u00a0 It is not what the Holy Spirit said through the inspired apostle: <em>For God so loved the world<\/em>, that hated Him, hated Jesus and his apostles, <em>that he gave <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_ftn11\">his<\/a> only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/11\/to-make-holy-part-9\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus elaborated how the old
