This is a continuation of a consideration of the differences between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew before Israel rejected Jesus as Messiah.\u00a0 The final clause of the first verse under consideration follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/a>\u201cBy the hand of\u201d Isaiah (yad<\/em>, \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b7\u05d3<\/a>) in the Masoretic text is a self-conscious attribution of the literary source of the information passed through Isaiah.\u00a0 Whether that self-consciousness was original and then subsequently ignored by the Greek translators, or a product of rethinking and revising the text, is more difficult to say.\u00a0 I find myself arguing both ways with no clear advantage to either.\u00a0 The word \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b7\u05d3 (yad<\/em>) does appear to be in the Isaiah scroll<\/a> found among the Dead Sea scrolls.<\/p>\n

Rashi\u2019s<\/a> commentary<\/a> is of no particular help here.\u00a0 He engaged a more peripheral issue suited to medieval religious sensibilities,[2]<\/sup><\/a> asserting that \u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05d7\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u059a<\/a> (p\u0101\u1e6fa\u1e25<\/em>) meant you shall gird <\/em>rather than and loose<\/em> (Tanakh), remove <\/em>(NET).\u00a0 The rabbis\u2019 choice \u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5<\/a> (an imperative form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)\u2014\u201cto separate, deduct, subtract; to remove, cut off, smite off; to strip off; to shift positions of; to deduct in advance and set apart (from the rest)\u201d\u2014entertained no such confusion in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll chase this negative example with a positive example, if for no other reason than to remind myself what it\u2019s like when the Masoretic text and Septuagint agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Rashi understood<\/a> \u201cFor the hand of the Lord shall rest:\u201d as \u201cThe might of the Omnipresent.\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t seem to correspond to God will give rest <\/em>(Elpenor) or God will give us rest <\/em>(NETS).\u00a0 It causes me to question whether \u05d9\u05b7\u05d3<\/a> (yad<\/em>) was the Hebrew word the rabbis sought to translate or explain in the Septuagint, though \u05d9\u05b7\u05d3 (yad<\/em>) does occur in the Isaiah scroll<\/a> of the Dead Sea scrolls.<\/p>\n

Clearly, when hands <\/em>occurred in the Hebrew text the rabbis had no particular aversion to translating them hands <\/em>in the Septuagint.\u00a0 The next negative example follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Though \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u059b\u05d9 (yad<\/em>) occurs in the Isaiah scroll<\/a> of the Dead Sea scrolls, it seems likely to me that the Masoretes wanted the children to be the work of mine hands<\/em> (\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u059b\u05d9<\/a>) as a rejoinder to Jesus (John 8:44 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

You people are from your father<\/a> the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. \u00a0He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not<\/a> uphold the truth because there is no truth in him. \u00a0Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature because he is a liar and the father of lies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This seems far more likely than the alternative idea that the rabbis found the children the work of mine hands<\/em> (\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u059b\u05d9), dropped the word \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u059b\u05d9 (yad<\/em>) and made God\u2019s works <\/em>less specific.\u00a0 It is possible perhaps that the rabbis translated \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u059b\u05d9 (yad<\/em>) \u03b4\u03b9\u1fbd<\/a> \u1f10\u03bc\u1f72<\/a>, because of me<\/em> (NETS), for my sake<\/em> (English Elpenor).\u00a0 If that is the case, however, they didn\u2019t understand \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u059b\u05d9 (yad<\/em>) here as of mine hands<\/em>. \u00a0Rashi<\/a> clearly understood \u201cFor, when he sees his children: who will be the work of My hands, i.e., righteous men.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05a3\u05d3<\/a> is found in the Isaiah scroll<\/a> of the Dead Sea scrolls.\u00a0 It seems possible that the rabbis thought \u03c6\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f79\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03be<\/a>) understood as a \u201cblade (of fire)\u201d was one Greek word to account for \u201chand\u201d (\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05a3\u05d3) of the flame <\/em>(\u05dc\u05b6\u05bd\u05d4\u05b8\u05d1\u05b8\u0591\u05d4<\/a>).<\/p>\n

It seems possible that \u03b4\u03b9\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f10\u03bc\u1f72<\/a> was the Rabbis\u2019 Greek translation of \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u0599<\/a>.\u00a0 It just didn\u2019t quite register as of mine hand<\/em>, as Rashi<\/a> understood it: \u201cfrom My hand:<\/strong> shall this retribution come to you.\u201d\u00a0 Because of me <\/em>(NETS) sounds quite close, while for my sake<\/em> (English Elpenor) strays farther afield to my ear.\u00a0 The word \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u0599 does occur in the Isaiah scroll<\/a> of the Dead Sea scrolls.<\/p>\n
