In Romans, Part 31<\/em><\/a> I related Paul\u2019s statement\u2014if you live according to the flesh, you will die<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a>\u2014to Jesus\u2019 saying to his disciples, The one who loves his life<\/em> [i.e., in this world<\/em>] destroys<\/a><\/em> [or, loses<\/em>] it<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The word translated life<\/em> here is \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>).\u00a0 Two verses later Jesus is recorded as saying, Now my soul<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) is greatly distressed<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is the life<\/em> of keeping body and soul together as opposed to the new life<\/em> of the Spirit.\u00a0 Though this connection was not as new to me as Jesus\u2019 saying to Martha<\/a>,4<\/sup><\/a> it too deserved some further study.<\/p>\n

I am the good shepherd<\/em>, Jesus said.\u00a0 I know my own and my own know me<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a> \u2013 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father \u2013 and I lay down my life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f75\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) for the sheep<\/em>.6<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This was a fairly clear statement of Jesus\u2019 death on our behalf, for us, in our place. \u00a0It becomes even clearer as a reference to an actual loss of soul-life as Jesus continued.\u00a0 This is why the Father loves me \u2013 because I lay down my life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f75\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>), so that I may take it back again. \u00a0No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will.\u00a0 I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again.\u00a0 This commandment I received from my Father<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is how Peter understood it (John 13:36-38 NET):<\/p>\n

Simon Peter said to him, \u201cLord, where are you going?\u201d Jesus replied, \u201cWhere I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.\u201d \u00a0Peter said to him, \u201cLord, why can\u2019t I follow you now?\u00a0 I will lay down my life (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f75\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>)<\/em> for you!\u201d \u00a0Jesus answered, \u201cWill you lay down your life (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f75\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>)<\/em> for me?\u00a0 I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied<\/a> (\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>me three times!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Later that same night when Jesus was arrested Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest\u2019s slave, cutting off his right ear<\/a><\/em>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peter was moments away from making good on his pledge to lay down his life for Jesus, in the terms that he in his soul-life understood at that moment.\u00a0 But Jesus intervened.\u00a0 What Peter had missed was the other meaning of being a good shepherd.<\/p>\n

I am the good shepherd<\/em>, Jesus also said.\u00a0 The good shepherd lays down his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f75\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) for the sheep<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Then Jesus contrasted the laying down of life of the good shepherd to the hired hand.\u00a0 The<\/a> hired hand, who is not a shepherd and does<\/a> not own sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u1f77\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) the sheep and runs away<\/em> (\u03c6\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03b5\u03cd\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>).10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Notice that the word translated abandons<\/em> here is the same word as forgive<\/em><\/a>, in the sense of sending away someone else\u2019s sins.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlee for your lives,\u201d the hired hand screams as he runs for his life.\u00a0 So the wolf attacks<\/em> (\u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) the sheep and scatters<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) them<\/a>. \u00a0Because<\/a> he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep<\/em>…11<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The good shepherd by contrast lays down his life, or puts his life on the line, to defend the sheep, the living<\/em> as opposed to the dying<\/em> sacrifice.\u00a0 After his resurrection Jesus made this point quite poignantly for Peter (John 21:15-17 NET [Table<\/a>]).<\/p>\n

Then when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, \u201cSimon, son of John<\/a>, do you love me more than these do?\u201d\u00a0 He replied, \u201cYes, Lord, you know I love you.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus told him, \u201cFeed my lambs.\u201d \u00a0Jesus said a second time, \u201cSimon, son of John<\/a>, do you love me?\u201d\u00a0 He replied, \u201cYes, Lord, you know I love you.\u201d \u00a0Jesus told him, \u201cShepherd my sheep.\u201d \u00a0Jesus said a third time, \u201cSimon, son of John<\/a>, do you love me?\u201d\u00a0 Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time, \u201cDo you love me?\u201d and said<\/a>, \u201cLord, you know everything.\u00a0 You know that I love you.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus<\/a> replied, \u201cFeed my sheep.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus had a different kind of laying down his life in mind for Peter.\u00a0 And still He promised him that he would also be crucified.\u00a0 I tell you the solemn truth, when you were young, you tied your clothes around you and went wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will tie you up and bring you where you do not want to go. \u00a0(Now Jesus said this to indicate clearly by what kind of death Peter was going to glorify God.)<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In my imagination I can see the crucified and risen Lord, standing, looking Peter in the eyes, smiling and nodding as he whispers, Follow me<\/em>.13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I think both understandings need to be grasped as I hear Jesus command:\u00a0 My commandment is this \u2013 to love one another just as I have loved you. \u00a0No one has greater love than this \u2013 that one lays down his life <\/em>(\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) for his friends. \u00a0You are my friends if you do what<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a> I command you<\/em>.15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so I think both must be brought to bear when considering, The one who loves his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) destroys<\/a><\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) it, and the one who hates<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) in this world guards it for eternal life<\/em> (\u03b6\u03c9\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03c9\u03ae<\/a>).16<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The one who loves his life<\/em>\u00a0is like one who does not lay down his life<\/em>, one who does not believe we have been<\/em> buried with<\/em> [Christ] through baptism into death <\/em>(\u03b8\u1f71\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b8\u03ac\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>),17<\/sup><\/a> or attempts to live as if it were not true.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the Spirit will lead one to martyrdom, perhaps not.\u00a0 After the resurrected Jesus prophesied that he would be crucified in his old age Peter asked about John.\u00a0 Jesus replied, \u201cIf I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours?\u00a0 You follow me!\u201d<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In Revelation John heard a loud voice in heaven speak of the brothers and sisters who overcame<\/em> (\u1f10\u03bd\u1f77\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) [the one who accuses them<\/a> day and night before our God<\/em>]19<\/sup><\/a> by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) so much that they were afraid to<\/em> (\u1f04\u03c7\u03c1\u03b9<\/a>) die<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u1f71\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03b8\u03ac\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>),20<\/sup><\/a> whether through martyrdom or feeding and protecting others.<\/p>\n

There is more to this soul<\/em>\u00a0life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) they did not love so much than food<\/em> as there is more to the body<\/em> (\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) than clothing.\u00a0 And so Jesus said, do not worry about your life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1fc7<\/a>, another form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>), what you will eat or<\/a> drink, or about your body<\/em> (\u03c3\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), what you will wear<\/em>.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For the unconverted<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) pursue<\/a> these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0But above all pursue his kingdom<\/a> and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well<\/em> [Table<\/a>].22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

If anyone wants to become<\/a> my follower<\/em>, Jesus said, he must deny<\/a><\/em> (\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u1f71\u03c3\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) himself <\/em>(\u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>), take up his cross daily<\/a>, and follow me. \u00a0For whoever<\/a> wants to save<\/em> (\u03c3\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) will lose<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) it, but whoever loses<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) for my sake will save<\/em> (\u03c3\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) it <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but loses<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) or forfeits <\/em>(\u03b6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u1f77\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) himself<\/em> (\u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>)? \u00a0For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels<\/em>.23<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus said, I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone.\u00a0 But if it dies, it produces much grain<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>; literally fruit<\/em>). \u00a0The one who loves his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) destroys<\/a><\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) it, and the one who hates<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) his life<\/em> (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) in this world guards it for eternal life<\/em> (\u03b6\u03c9\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03c9\u03ae<\/a>) [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too.\u00a0 If<\/a> anyone serves me, the Father will honor him <\/em>[Table<\/a>].\u00a0 Now my soul <\/em>(\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) is greatly distressed.\u00a0 And what should I say? \u2018Father, deliver<\/em> (\u03c3\u1ff6\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) me from this hour\u2019?\u00a0 No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour<\/em>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so has each of us who know and love and want to follow Him.<\/p>\n
