Since the Masoretic text and Septuagint agree here, I want to spend some time considering what might have been on Jesus\u2019 heart (Hebrew: \u05dc\u0596\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9<\/a>; Greek: \u1f21<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>).\u00a0 Here are the first occurrences of \u05dc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u0594\u05d5\u05b9<\/a> (l\u0113\u1e07<\/em>) in the Masoretic text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Jesus continued this teaching about the human heart (Matthew 15:18, 19; Mark 7:20-23 NET):<\/p>\n

But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, and these things defile a person. \u00a0For out of the heart (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em> come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.<\/p>\n

What comes out of a person defiles him. \u00a0For from within, out of the human heart (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em>, come evil ideas, sexual immorality,[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> theft,[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> murder, adultery,[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. \u00a0All these evils come from within and defile a person.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The first occurrences of \u05dc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u0594\u05d5\u05b9<\/a> (l\u0113\u1e07<\/em>) in Genesis from the Masoretic text had me thinking this essay would be a contrast between the heart of human beings and the heart of God.\u00a0 As I made or studied the tables for these verses, however, I noticed that the rabbis who translated the Septuagint veered away from a mechanical<\/a> translation (if a form of \u05dc\u05b5\u05d1 [l\u0113\u1e07<\/em>] was actually in the Hebrew they translated) whenever God was the subject.\u00a0 I took it to heart.\u00a0 It was a human heart, THE<\/a> human heart, that melted like wax on the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

David\u2019s prayer got a very literal answer<\/a> in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/a> when NAZIs, the contemporary archetype of evil, and their French collaborator literally melted like wax before the ark of the covenant. \u00a0But NAZIs and their collaborators are not the only ones with evil human hearts, the source of evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Do not be amazed that I said to you<\/em>, Jesus said, \u2018You must all be born from above.\u2019<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul wrote of Jesus: For<\/a> he hath made him<\/em>\u2026sin for us<\/em>, who knew no sin<\/em>\u2026[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe the phrase \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bc\u1f74 \u03b3\u03bd\u1f79\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd (who knew no sin<\/em>) means that Jesus lacked an evil human heart.\u00a0 Quite the contrary, the Word became flesh<\/em>,[7]<\/sup><\/a> John testified of Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus stated explicitly how<\/a> He knew <\/em>(\u03b3\u03bd\u1f79\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) no sin<\/em>: the Father that dwelleth in me, he<\/a> doeth the works<\/a><\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith<\/em>,[9]<\/sup><\/a> the beginning, the firstborn from the dead<\/em>:[10]<\/sup><\/a> Before his crucifixion He was a human being with an evil human heart so led<\/a> by the Holy Spirit, so filled<\/a> with God\u2019s own love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control that He knew no sin<\/em>.\u00a0 But the Word<\/em> become flesh did not need anyone to testify about man, for he knew <\/em>(\u1f10\u03b3\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) what was in man<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And God hath made him<\/em>\u2026sin for us<\/em>, who knew no sin; that we might be made<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a> the righteousness of God in him<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The writer of Hebrews, who I think scribed what Jesus taught<\/a> during the forty days between his resurrection and ascension, was fairly explicit about Jesus’ humanity (Hebrews 2:14-17; 4:15 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in their humanity, so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. \u00a0For surely his concern (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u1f71\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> is not for angels, but he is concerned (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u1f71\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> for Abraham\u2019s descendants. \u00a0Therefore he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.<\/p>\n

Through faith in Him we, too, receive his Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:21, 22 NET):<\/p>\n

But it is God who establishes us together with you in Christ and who anointed us, who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> as a down payment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul prayed for the inner strengthening each of us needs to be a dwelling place of God (Ephesians 3:14-19 NET):<\/p>\n

I kneel before the Father<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. \u00a0I pray that according to the wealth<\/a> of his glory he will grant<\/a> you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, that Christ will dwell in your hearts (\u03c4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> through faith, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love<\/a>, you will be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you will be filled up to all the fullness of God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can think of no better way to end this essay than to conclude with Paul\u2019s own benediction (Ephesians 3:20, 21 NET):<\/p>\n
