rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), Paul continued, <em>but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, \u201cAbba, Father.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Human beings have been afraid of God ever since <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/30\/romans-part-30\/\">Adam died<\/a> and hid from Him, saying, <em>and I was afraid because I was naked<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0That is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ef.html#efobhqhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellopos.net\/elpenor\/physis\/septuagint-genesis\/3.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a>, literally, \u201cand I was afraid because naked I am.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0And naked we still are, because <em><em>no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked <\/em><\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gumna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bc\u03bd\u1f70<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gumnos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bc\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<em><em> and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account<\/em><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is fitting that the fear that came upon us when Adam sinned is banished in Christ.<\/p>\n<p>The word <em><a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ab.html#abba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abba<\/a><\/em> is the childish word for father [Addendum 9\/5\/2024: or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/factchecker-does-abba-mean-daddy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perhaps not<\/a>].\u00a0 It reminds me of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/young-john-f-kennedy-jr-plays-under-president-kennedys-desk-news-photo\/849876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picture<\/a> of John John Kennedy peeking out from under his father\u2019s desk in the oval office at the White House.\u00a0 In October of 1962 President Kennedy was the most feared man on the planet, with the power to plunge the world into nuclear war.\u00a0 But to John John, he was Daddy.\u00a0 <em>The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God\u2019s children. \u00a0And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ) \u2013 if indeed we suffer with<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sumpa.html#sumpascomen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sumpa.html#sumpascw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him so we may also be glorified with<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sund.html#sundoxasqwmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sund.html#sundoxazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are many things someone might suffer, but this linkage of <em>suffer with<\/em> <em>him so we may also be glorified with<\/em> <em>him<\/em> leads me back to chapter 6: <em>Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#doxhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#doxa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03cc\u03be\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the Father, so we too may live a new life<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Once Jesus\u2019 disciples knew that He was <em>the Christ, the Son of the living God<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <em>he instructed them<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><em> not to tell anyone<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/paq.html#paqein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pas.html#pascw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: \u201cGod forbid, Lord!\u00a0 This must not happen to you!\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Mark emphasized that Jesus <em>spoke openly about this.\u00a0 So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>But<\/em> [Jesus] <em>turned and said to Peter, \u201cGet behind me, Satan!\u00a0 You are a stumbling block to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn56\">me<\/a>, because you are not setting your mind on God\u2019s interests, but on man\u2019s\u201d <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]<em>.\u00a0 Then Jesus said to his disciples, \u201cIf anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Paul wrote, <em>For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So the <em>suffering<\/em> Paul had in mind I think was primarily the frustration and inner confusion associated with this death and resurrection experience, particularly that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/\">neither <em>I<\/em><\/a> (old man born of the flesh nor new man born of the Spirit) can do what <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/\"><em>I<\/em> want<\/a>:\u00a0 <em>For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn38\">for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn39\">what<\/a> you want<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ve written in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/01\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-3\/\">another essay<\/a> in more detail that I think the essence of taking up one\u2019s cross to follow Jesus in this death is <em>not my will<\/em> <em>but yours be done<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> and a few more ideas about this suffering of death in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/the-soul\/\">another<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>For I consider that our present sufferings<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/paq.html#paqhmata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/paq.html#paqhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>cannot even be compared to the glory that will be revealed to us<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued (Romans 8:19-21 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the creation eagerly waits for the revelation of the sons of God <em>[e.g.,<\/em> all who are led by the Spirit of God<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For the creation was subjected to futility \u2013 not willingly but because of God who subjected it \u2013 in<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/em>\u00a0hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#douleias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#douleia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>of decay <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fq.html#fqoras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03b8\u03bf\u03c1\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fq.html#fqora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03b8\u03bf\u03c1\u03ac<\/a>) <\/em>into the glorious freedom of God\u2019s children.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In school I learned about evolution, that marvelous creative force that made everything we see today.\u00a0 In my real life I travel from medical conference to medical conference where I hear about genetic defects and diseases, the bondage of decay, the actual observable results of evolution.\u00a0 The palliation of genetic defects and diseases is one of our last locally produced products and a mainspring of our economy.\u00a0 While medical researchers may intend to find \u201ccures\u201d for genetic defects and diseases good economic sense would argue against that.\u00a0 But there is another more pressing problem to consider, more long range and more far reaching.<\/p>\n<p>Those who are faithful to their creator evolution, what I will call the evolutionary mind, face a daunting problem when it comes to \u201ccures\u201d for the products of evolution.\u00a0 To my mind a cure would be found along the lines of investigation leading to an understanding of God\u2019s original design of the genetic code for humankind.\u00a0 This would not be conceivable to the evolutionary mind.\u00a0 There was no grand design, no right way for the code to be written.\u00a0 It was all happenstance that happened to produce life-forms that survived under given conditions.\u00a0 For the evolutionary mind a \u201ccure\u201d must come from one\u2019s own mind, evaluating the conditions people must thrive under and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walt_Disney_Imagineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imagineering<\/a>\u201d so to speak how the code should read to accommodate those conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Just as an aside, it occurs to me that back-breeding (e.g., inter-racial marriage) is still quite effective to overcoming some of the genetic burden that continues to accumulate over time.\u00a0 When I was young such marriage was a curiosity.\u00a0 Now inter-racial marriage seems to be a positive symptom of enlightened thinking among many young people. \u00a0If that trend continues and becomes standard practice it may well alleviate the necessity for any more Draconian measures forbidding intra-racial marriage.\u00a0 And to my way of thinking it is the religious mind that would stand in the way of inter-racial marriage much like it would have bridled at <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/10\/davids-forgiveness-part-5\/\">God\u2019s decrees against intra-familial marriage<\/a> when genetic burden made that necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s point, however, was that those who trust in Christ, or more specifically those led by the Spirit of God, wait for God\u2019s solution, <em>that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God\u2019s children<\/em>.\u00a0 While the <em>children<\/em> don\u2019t know exactly how this will take place, they assume it is along the lines of death and resurrection that they are experiencing, a destruction by fire and a creation of new heavens and a new earth (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Peter+3:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Peter 3:8-13 NET<\/a>).\u00a0 Ultimately, the <em>children <\/em>trust that <em>Abba, Daddy <\/em>has everything under control.\u00a0 The scorn and ridicule that elicits from those with an evolutionary mind may also be part of the <em>suffering <\/em>Paul wrote about.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunw.html#sunwdinei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c9\u03b4\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunw.html#sunwdinw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c9\u03b4\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>until now. \u00a0Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies. \u00a0For in hope we were saved. \u00a0Now hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> for what he sees?<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is what convinced me that for Paul, <em>So then, with the mind <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/18\/romans-part-28\/\">I myself<\/a> serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a> and, <em>For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn38\">for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn39\">what<\/a> you want<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/21\/romans-part-32\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> were normative for the believer\u2019s experience here on earth.\u00a0 They are the suffering to which he referred.\u00a0 Even being led by the Spirit is but a foretaste of the glory that will be revealed to us. \u00a0It is the foretaste that prompts us to pray, <em>Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored, may your kingdom come, may your will be done on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote2sym\">earth<\/a> as it is in heaven<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_Table23\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
