this is as good a time as any to say that I take it for granted that Jesus spoke Greek, and that those who heard him understood him perfectly well in what was by then, more than three centuries after the conquest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishhistory.org\/alexander-the-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander the Great<\/a>, their native tongue.\u00a0 And yes, of course, the Greek they spoke and understood was shaded and colored by their own culture and heritage.<\/p>\n<p>I first encounter the Greek word \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 in Matthew 5:31, 32 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was said, \u2018<strong><em>Whoever<\/em><\/strong><em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <strong>divorces <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apolush\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apoluw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <strong><em>his wife must give her a legal document<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019 \u00a0<\/em>But I say to you that everyone<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>who divorces<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apoluwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> his wife, except for <em>[<\/em>the cause <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>of <em>(KJV)]<\/em> immorality <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, makes <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>her commit adultery<em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moiceuqhnai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moiceuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, and whoever marries a divorced <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apole.html#apolelumenhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b5\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> woman commits adultery<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicatai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The word \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9 is a compound of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apo.html#apo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc<\/a> (<em>off<\/em>, <em>away<\/em>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lu.html#luw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a> (<em>loosen<\/em>).\u00a0 So while it is perfectly legitimate to translate the <em>off-loosening<\/em> of a wife and sending her <em>away<\/em> with the word <em>divorces<\/em> in verse 31 and <em>divorced<\/em> in verse 32, it is equally legitimate to translate the <em>off-loosening<\/em> of another\u2019s sin and sending it <em>away<\/em> as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/forgiveness\/\">forgive and forgiven<\/a> in Luke 6:37 (NET).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A good precedent for translating \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9 <em>forgive<\/em> is found in Matthew 18:27 (NET), <em>The Parable of the Unforgiving Slave<\/em>, where it is coupled with <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/afi.html#afihmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The lord had compassion on that slave and released <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apel.html#apeluse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f73\u03bb\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apoluw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> him <em>[e.g., <\/em>from custody<em>]<\/em>, and forgave <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/afh.html#afhke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/afi.html#afihmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> him the debt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More to the point, perhaps, these story images give me a vivid picture of what forgiveness is.\u00a0 But I\u2019m laboring this point because the first occurrence of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9, as <em>divorce<\/em>, gives me a little more insight into Matthew 5:31 and 32.\u00a0 Joseph considered <em>sending away<\/em> his fianc\u00e9e Mary, Jesus\u2019 mother (Matthew 1:18, 19 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way.\u00a0 While<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Holy Spirit<\/a>. \u00a0Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>man, and because he did not want <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>to disgrace<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dei.html#deigmatisai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u1f77\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dei.html#deigmatizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>her, he intended <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eb.html#eboulhqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b2\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bou.html#boulomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>to divorce <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apolusai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apoluw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> her privately.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joseph is an interesting pivotal character\u00a0between an old vision and a new vision of righteousness.\u00a0 He could not be tainted by a wife who had <em>known<\/em> another man, but he was not willing to disgrace her either.\u00a0 If he were fully under the old vision of righteousness he probably should have <em>disgraced<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dei.html#deigmatizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) her to completely absolve himself of wrongdoing.\u00a0 But clearly his heart wasn\u2019t in it.\u00a0 So he planned to <em>divorce<\/em> or <em>send<\/em> her <em>away<\/em> privately, as opposed to <em>forgive<\/em> her privately when considered in context.\u00a0 The story continues in Matthew 1:20 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When he had contemplated this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, \u201cJoseph, son of David<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/em>, do not be afraid to take Mary<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Holy Spirit<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When Joseph married Mary as the angel of the Lord commanded he made the pivot into a new vision of righteousness. \u00a0\u00a0He quietly bore the <em>un<\/em>righteous assumptions of all who could count to nine, for who in first century Israel would ever believe an old Gentile excuse like, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/30\/fear-genesis-part-6\/#_myth\">a god did it<\/a>,\u201d particularly the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?<\/p>\n<p>There was a dark side to the old vision of righteousness.\u00a0 Under law it is easy to\u00a0mistake <em>not-sin<\/em>\u00a0for <em>righteousness<\/em>.\u00a0 In Matthew 19:3 (NET), <em>some Pharisees came to <\/em>[Jesus]<em> in order to test<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him.\u00a0 They asked,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> <em>\u201cIs it lawful<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exes.html#exestin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03be\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exes.html#exesti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03be\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>) <em>to divorce <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apolusai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolu.html#apoluw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<em> a wife for any cause?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think it was wise to translate <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> <em>test<\/em> here.\u00a0 The word can mean <em>tempt to evil<\/em> (1 Corinthians 10:9 NET), <em>And let us not put Christ to the test<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekp.html#ekpeirazwmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekp.html#ekpeirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>), <em>as some of them<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <em>did<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epei.html#epeirasan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9), <em>and were destroyed by snakes<\/em>; and (1 Corinthians 10:13 NET), <em>No trial<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirasmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>has overtaken you that is not faced by others.\u00a0 And God is faithful<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>): <em>He will not let you be tried<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirasqhnai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) <em>beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirasmw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1ff7<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2) <em>will also provide a way out so that you<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> <em>may be able to endure it<\/em>.\u00a0 It could also mean the prudent examination of any spiritual claim to authority (2 Corinthians 13:5a NET), <em>Put yourselves to the test<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) <em>to see if you are in the faith; examine<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#dokimazete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#dokimazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>yourselves!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is entirely possible that some of the Pharisees present intended exactly this latter kind of examination of Jesus when they questioned Him.\u00a0 It is possible that some were curious whether Jesus agreed with them or not.\u00a0 There was a dispute about divorce between the schools of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishencyclopedia.com\/articles\/5238-divorce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shammai and Hillel<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0a generation earlier.\u00a0 And it is possible that some had already judged Jesus as evil and were searching for evidence to condemn him.<\/p>\n<p>The translation of the Pharisees question\u2014<i>Is it lawful <\/i><i>to divorce a wife for any cause?<\/i>\u2014is good politic but also probably reflects the actual situation.\u00a0 It is possible that someone wanted confirmation of a growing suspicion: <i>Is it lawful <\/i><i>to divorce a wife for any cause <\/i>at all, ever, under any circumstances?\u00a0 Love, mercy and forgiveness were not unknown in Israel.\u00a0 And \u1f14\u03be\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9 seems to me to carry the hope that the law, what is lawful, correlates in some positive way with righteousness.\u00a0 (That hope was dashed by the way when Paul penned Romans 3:20 [NET], For <i>no one is declared righteous before him<\/i> <i>by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/i>.)\u00a0 And it is highly probable that many of the Pharisees asked Jesus, <i>Is it lawful <\/i><i>to divorce a wife for any cause <\/i>that seems good to me?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus did not turn to Exodus, Leviticus or Deuteronomy to answer the question, but to Genesis.\u00a0 <em>He answered<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> (Matthew 19:4-6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHave you not read that from the beginning the Creator<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" <em>righteous<\/em>) <em>to divorce a wife for any cause?<\/em>\u2014was a fairly emphatic, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 Then the Pharisees asked an entirely different question (Matthew 19:7 NET), <em>Why then did Moses<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> <em>command<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ene.html#eneteilato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03bb\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entellw\" target=\"_blank\" <em>but from the beginning it was not this way<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 next statement raises a few questions.\u00a0 Was He continuing to address the Pharisees\u2019 second question?\u00a0 Their first question?\u00a0 Both?\u00a0 Or neither?\u00a0 Jesus said (Matthew 19:9 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now I say to you that whoever divorces <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicatai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>[KJV,<\/em> and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery<em>.]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If this statement refers back to the Pharisees\u2019 first question, then it seems to provide an exception to no divorce and remarriage.\u00a0 If it refers to the second question it seems to address an obscure point about \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1, presumably by the wife, exempting the husband&#8217;s remarriage after a divorce from being considered \u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, <em>committing adultery<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m having some difficulty predicting its meaning if it references both or neither question.\u00a0 (There is no note explaining why the last half of the verse was removed from the NET.)<\/p>\n<p>The disciples response (Matthew 19:10 NET)\u2014<em>If this is the case of a husband with a wife, it is better<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sumf.html#sumferei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c6\u1f73\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sumf.html#sumferw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c6\u03ad\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) <em>not to marry <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ga.html#gamhsai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ga.html#gamew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<em>!<\/em>\u2014is not particularly helpful to clarify the issue.\u00a0 What it does imply is that men who want to divorce their wives and remarry, who believe that this statement is an exception to Jesus\u2019 understanding of the issue, and who want to justify themselves by law, have a selfish interest in making the meaning of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 as broad as possible.\u00a0 And that makes me cautious about accepting\u00a0<em>immorality<\/em> as the best possible translation of
