Peter<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> and John were going up to the temple at the time for prayer<\/em>\u2026[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They met a beggar lame from birth<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Peter said (Acts 3:6-8 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no silver or gold, but what I do have I give you.\u00a0 In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, stand up and walk!\u201d \u00a0Then Peter took hold of him by the right hand and raised him[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> up, and at once the man\u2019s feet and ankles[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> were made strong. \u00a0He jumped up, stood and began walking around, and he entered the temple courts with them, walking and leaping and praising God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For the kingdom of God is demonstrated not in idle talk but with power<\/em> (\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>),[5]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote his dear children<\/em><\/a> in Corinth.\u00a0 As a crowd gathered, Peter declared to the people <\/em>(Acts 3:12-16 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cMen of Israel, why are you amazed at this? \u00a0Why do you stare at us as if we had made this man walk by our own power (\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> or piety [Table<\/a>]<\/em>? \u00a0The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> handed over and rejected[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in the presence of Pilate after he had decided to release him. \u00a0But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a man who was a murderer be released to you. \u00a0You killed the Originator of life, whom God raised from the dead. \u00a0To this fact we are witnesses! \u00a0And on the basis of faith in Jesus\u2019 name, his very name has made this man\u2014whom you see and know\u2014strong. \u00a0The faith that is through Jesus has given him this complete health in the presence of you all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Peter denied that the power to heal the lame man was his own, rather it was the power of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of <\/em>[their] forefathers<\/em>.\u00a0 And it was done for an explicit reason: to glorify his servant Jesus<\/em>.\u00a0 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic<\/em>, Jesus asked, \u2018Your sins are forgiven,\u2019<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/a> or to say, \u2018Stand up,<\/em>[9]<\/sup><\/a> take your stretcher, and walk\u2019?<\/em>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>Peter followed Jesus\u2019 example here.\u00a0 He was quite clear which Jesus <\/em>he referred to, and which sin.\u00a0 I want to spend some time here recalling this rejection of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a>Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, and said to them, \u201cYou brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. \u00a0When I examined him before you, I did not[11]<\/sup><\/a> find this man guilty of anything you accused him of doing. (Luke 23:13, 14 NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u201cI find no basis for an accusation against him. (John 18:38b NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us.[12]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Look, he has done nothing deserving death. \u00a0I will therefore have him flogged and release him.\u201d[13]<\/sup><\/a> (Luke 23:15, 16 NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
But it is your custom that I release one prisoner for you at the Passover. (John 18:39a NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

During the feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted. \u00a0At that time they had in custody a notorious prisoner named Jesus[14]<\/sup><\/a> Barabbas.<\/td>\nDuring the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels[16]<\/sup><\/a> who had committed murder during an insurrection.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\nThen the crowd came up[17]<\/sup><\/a> and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was[18]<\/sup><\/a> his custom.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

So after they had assembled, Pilate said to them, \u201cWhom do you want me to release for you, Jesus[19]<\/sup><\/a> Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ?\u201d<\/td>\nSo Pilate asked them, \u201cDo you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?\u201d<\/td>\nSo do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

As he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him: \u201cHave nothing to do with that innocent man; I have suffered greatly as a result of a dream about him today.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas<\/td>\nBut the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
and to have Jesus killed. \u00a0The governor asked them, \u201cWhich of the two do you want me to release for you?\u201d<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

And they said,[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cBarabbas!\u201d<\/td>\nBut they all shouted out[21]<\/sup><\/a> together, \u201cTake this man away! \u00a0Release Barabbas[22]<\/sup><\/a> for us!\u201d \u00a0(This was a man who had been thrown into prison[23]<\/sup><\/a> for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder.)<\/td>\nThen they shouted back, \u201cNot this man, but Barabbas!\u201d \u00a0(Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged severely. \u00a0The soldiers braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe. \u00a0They came up to him again and again[24]<\/sup><\/a> and said, \u201cHail, king of the Jews!\u201d \u00a0And they struck him repeatedly in the face.<\/p>\n

Again[25]<\/sup><\/a> Pilate went out and said to the Jewish leaders, \u201cLook, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no reason for an accusation against him.\u201d \u00a0So Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. (John 19:1-5a NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/td>\n\u201cLook,[29]<\/sup><\/a> here is the man!\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0\u201cThen what should I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?\u201d<\/td>\n\u00a0\u201cThen what do you want me to do with the one you call king[30]<\/sup><\/a> of the Jews?\u201d<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
They all said,[31]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cCrucify him!\u201d<\/td>\nThey shouted back, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d<\/td>\nBut they kept on shouting, \u201cCrucify, crucify[32]<\/sup><\/a> him!\u201d<\/td>\nWhen the chief priests and their officers saw him, they shouted out, \u201cCrucify him! \u00a0Crucify him!\u201d[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Pilate said, \u201cYou take him and crucify him! \u00a0Certainly I find no reason for an accusation against him!\u201d \u00a0The Jewish leaders replied, \u201cWe have a law, and according to our[34]<\/sup><\/a> law he ought to die because he claimed to be the Son of God!\u201d<\/p>\n

When Pilate heard what they said, he was more afraid than ever, and he went back into the governor\u2019s residence and said to Jesus, \u201cWhere do you come from?\u201d \u00a0But Jesus gave him no answer. \u00a0So Pilate said, \u201cDo you refuse to speak to me? \u00a0Don\u2019t you know I have the authority to release you and to crucify you?\u201d \u00a0Jesus[35]<\/sup><\/a> replied,[36]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cYou would have no authority over me at all, unless it was given to you from above. \u00a0Therefore the one who handed me over[37]<\/sup><\/a> to you is guilty of greater sin.\u201d<\/p>\n

From this point on, Pilate tried to release him. \u00a0But the Jewish leaders shouted out,[38]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cIf you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar! \u00a0Everyone who claims to be[39]<\/sup><\/a> a king opposes Caesar!\u201d \u00a0When Pilate heard these words[40]<\/sup><\/a> he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat[41]<\/sup><\/a> in the place called \u201cThe Stone Pavement\u201d (Gabbatha in Aramaic). \u00a0(Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover, about[42]<\/sup><\/a> noon.) \u00a0Pilate said to the Jewish leaders, \u201cLook, here is your king!\u201d \u00a0Then they[43]<\/sup><\/a> shouted out, \u201cAway with him! \u00a0Away with him! \u00a0Crucify him!\u201d (John 19:6b-15a NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/td>\nPilate asked, \u201cShall I crucify your king?\u201d \u00a0The high priests replied, \u201cWe have no king except Caesar!\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\n<\/td>\nI have found him guilty of no crime deserving death. \u00a0I will therefore flog him and release him.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
But they shouted more insistently, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d<\/td>\nBut they shouted more insistently,[45]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cCrucify him!\u201d<\/td>\nBut they were insistent, demanding with loud shouts that he be crucified. \u00a0And their shouts[46]<\/sup><\/a> prevailed.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
When Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but that instead a riot was starting, he took some water, washed his hands before the crowd and said, \u201cI am innocent of this man\u2019s[47]<\/sup><\/a> blood. \u00a0You take care of it yourselves!\u201d \u00a0In reply all the people said, \u201cLet his blood be on us and on our children!\u201d (Matthew 27:24, 25 NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Then he released Barabbas for them.<\/td>\nPilate released Barabbas for them.<\/td>\nHe released[49]<\/sup><\/a> the man they asked for, who had been thrown in prison[50]<\/sup><\/a> for insurrection and murder.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
But after he had Jesus flogged,<\/td>\nThen, after he had Jesus flogged,<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
he handed him over to be crucified.<\/td>\nhe handed him over to be crucified.<\/td>\nBut he handed Jesus over to their will.<\/td>\nThen Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This Gospel harmony is certainly debatable.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t even tried to resolve when or how often Jesus was flogged. \u00a0My interest here was to highlight the emotional contrast between the fire and brimstone condemnation anticipated by the religious mind for such rejection of Jesus, and the mind of Christ revealed through Peter\u2019s words (Acts 3:17 NET):<\/p>\n

And now, brothers, I know you acted in ignorance (\u1f04\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f04\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, as your rulers did too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul acknowledged that he was treated with mercy because<\/em> [he] acted ignorantly<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in unbelief<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>).[51]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And it was Paul who wrote that God has consigned all people to disobedience <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) so that he may show mercy to them all<\/em>.[52]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
