{"id":17,"date":"2012-04-15T00:29:40","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T18:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=17"},"modified":"2026-06-09T09:52:02","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T14:52:02","slug":"introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=17","title":{"rendered":"Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a id=\"_purpose\"><\/a>This is my attempt to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Hebrews%204%3A12-13&amp;version=NET\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharpness and precision<\/a> of Scripture to distinguish the Gospel from what I call the <em>religious mind<\/em>.\u00a0 Admittedly, the <em>religious mind<\/em> may be nothing more than a subspecies of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%208%3A5-9&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carnal mind<\/a><\/em> (KJV) or the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%208%3A5-9&amp;version=NET\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outlook of the flesh<\/a><\/em> (NET),<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> but it is and has been particularly troubling to me.\u00a0 [Addendum 4\/13\/2026: What I have called the\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/04\/13\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-4\/#_old_human\">religious mind<\/a><\/i>\u00a0focuses primarily on the religious aspect of this phenomenon. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/Ephesians+4:21-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>old human<\/i><\/a>\u00a0is a much better description (though I probably won\u2019t change the name of this site at this late date).] To begin let me clarify what I mean by <em>Gospel<\/em>.\u00a0 The standard text is 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you \u2013 unless you believed in vain. \u00a0For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received \u2013 that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. \u00a0Then he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at one time, most<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. \u00a0Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. \u00a0Last of all, as though to one born at the wrong time, he appeared to me also.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_death\"><\/a>These historical facts are only part of the <em>Gospel<\/em> as I am using the term.\u00a0 To this, at a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/\">minimum<\/a>, I would add Romans 6:3-6 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? \u00a0Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.\u00a0 For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection. \u00a0We know that our old man <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pal.html#palaios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hm.html#hmwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; literally, \u201cour old human\u201d)<\/em> was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is where the Gospel begins to affect my life.\u00a0 Here is where I share in the Gospel.\u00a0 But just as the <em>carnal mind<\/em> or <em>outlook of the flesh<\/em> argues against the historicity of Christ\u2019s atonement and resurrection, my <em>religious mind<\/em> debates my liberation from sin.\u00a0 It fills me with <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/16\/everyone-fathered-by-god-does-not-sin\/\">fear<\/a> and outright unbelief when I encounter statements like 1 John 5:18 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We know that everyone fathered by God <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/18\/romans-part-28\/\">does not sin<\/a>, but God protects the one<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But if I remain calm and think for a moment, this fear and unbelief make perfect sense.\u00a0 My <em>religious mind<\/em>, as a subspecies of the <em>carnal mind<\/em> or the <em>outlook of the flesh<\/em>, feels its own weakness and fears its own demise when confronted with this Gospel (Romans 8:7 NET),<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u2026because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Addendum<\/strong>: September 22, 2018<\/p>\n<p>Tables comparing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/#_Table1\">1 Corinthians 15:4<\/a>;
