NEB, NRSV \u201cmy mouth\u201d) assuming that an error of transposition has occurred in the traditional Hebrew text.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since the Septuagint also has <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#iscus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#mou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/egw.html#egw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03ce<\/a>), <em>My strength<\/em>, this \u201cerror of transposition\u201d would have occurred, taken root and spread sometime prior to the translation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Septuagint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 Regardless the theme of dryness following the melting heart of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/04\/psalm-22-part-8\/\">previous verse<\/a> is fairly clear.<\/p>\n<p>So whether it was his <em>strength <\/em>or the <em>roof of<\/em> [his] <em>mouth<\/em>, it was <em>dried up<\/em> (<em>y\u0101\u1e07\u0113\u0161<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h3001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05b8\u0598\u05d1\u05b5\u059a\u05e9\u05c1<\/a>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exh.html#exhranqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b7\u03c1\u1f71\u03bd\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/xh.html#xhrainw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03be\u03b7\u03c1\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>like a potsherd<\/em>.\u00a0 His <em>tongue cleaveth<\/em>, <em>sticks <\/em>(<em>d\u0101\u1e07aq<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h1692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05de\u05bb\u05d3\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05a3\u05e7<\/a>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ke.html#kekollhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u1f79\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kol.html#kollaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) to his <em>jaws<\/em>, <em>gums<\/em>.\u00a0 He was <em>brought<\/em>\u2026<em>into the dust<\/em> (<em>\u02bf\u0101p\u0304\u0101r<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h6083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05b7\u05bd\u05e2\u05b2\u05e4\u05b7\u05e8<\/a>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/co.html#coun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/co.html#cous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of death<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am thirsty!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/05\/28\/psalm-22-part-9\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said from the cross.\u00a0 The NET note (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+19:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">84<\/a>) reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In order to fulfill (\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7 [telei\u014dth\u0113], a wordplay on the previous statement that everything was completed [\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, tetelestai]) the scripture, he said, \u201cI am thirsty.\u201d The scripture referred to is probably <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+69:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ps 69:21<\/a>, \u201cThey also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.\u201d Also suggested, however, is <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+22:15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ps 22:15<\/a>, \u201cMy tongue cleaves to the roof of my mouth, and you [God] lay me in the dust of death.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+22:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ps 22:1<\/a> reads \u201cMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?,\u201d a statement Jesus makes from the cross in both <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+27:46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt 27:46<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Mark+15:34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 15:34<\/a>. In light of the connection in the Fourth Gospel between thirst and the living water which Jesus offers, it is highly ironic that here Jesus himself, the source of that living water, expresses his thirst. And since <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+7:39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7:39<\/a> associates the living water with the Holy Spirit, Jesus\u2019 statement here in <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+19:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19:28<\/a> amounts to an admission that at this point he has been forsaken by God (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+22:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ps 22:1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+27:46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt 27:46<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Mark+15:34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 15:34<\/a>).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/historycollection.com\/10-of-the-most-famous-quotes-never-said-or-misattributed\/3\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSometimes%20a%20cigar%20is%20just,now%20often%20called%20Freudian%20%E2%80%93%20meaning.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar<\/a>.\u00a0 So I\u2019m going with Jesus was thirsty, rather than that He was abandoned (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+1:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 1:32-34<\/a>) by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 He was offered something to drink and <em>received <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lambanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) it (John 19:29, 30 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/05\/28\/psalm-22-part-9\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> jar full of sour wine was there, href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/05\/28\/psalm-22-part-9\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and lifted it to his mouth. \u00a0When he had received the sour wine,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/05\/28\/psalm-22-part-9\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jesus said, \u201cIt is completed!\u201d \u00a0Then he Gren<\/a> asked rhetorically in an article\u2014\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsjets.org\/files\/JETS-PDFs\/48\/48-2\/48-2-pp283-299_JETS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piercing the Ambiguities of Psalm 22:16 and the Messiah\u2019s Mission<\/a>\u201d\u2014published June 2005 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsjets.org\/JETS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of Evangelical Theological Society<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>First, we note that this translation predates the KJV. The Geneva Bible of 1560 states, \u201cthey perced mine hands and my feete,\u201d while the KJV reads, \u201cthey pierced my hands and my feet.\u201d These readings come from the Greek Septuagint and Jerome\u2019s Latin Vulgate. Psalm 22:16 is one place where the LXX best reflects the original Hebrew <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vorlage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vorlage<\/a><em> text.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-hebrew.org\/jeffbenner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeff A. Benner<\/a> explained the Hebrew issue in an article\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-hebrew.org\/psalms\/psalm-22-17-like-a-lion-or-they-pierced.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 22:17: &#8220;Like a lion&#8221; or &#8220;they pierced?&#8221;<\/a><\/em>\u2014on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-hebrew.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ancient Hebrew Research Center<\/a> online:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The word \u05db\u05d0\u05e8\u05d9 (<\/em>ka\u2019ari<em>) is the Hebrew word \u05d0\u05e8\u05d9 (<\/em>ari<em>) meaning \u201clion,\u201d with the prefix \u05db (<\/em>k<em>) meaning \u201clike.\u201d So \u05db\u05d0\u05e8\u05d9 (<\/em>ka\u2019ari<em>) means \u201clike a lion.\u201d The word \u05db\u05d0\u05e8\u05d5 (<\/em>ka&#8217;aru<em>) is the Hebrew verb \u05db\u05d0\u05e8 (<\/em>K.A.R<em>) meaning \u201cto dig\u201d or possibly \u201cto pierce\u201d (the meaning of this word is determined by examining other Semitic languages that do use this word). When the letter vav (\u05d5) is added to the end of a verb, it identifies the verb as perfect tense (similar to our past tense) and the subject of the verb as third person, masculine, plural. So this verb would be translated as \u201cthey dug\u201d or \u201cthey pierced.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Benner also described the difference between reading printed text and manuscripts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Hebrew word \u05db\u05d0\u05e8\u05d9 (<\/em>ka&#8217;ariy<em>-like a lion) is the word found in the Masoretic Hebrew text in this verse. However, in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which is 1,000 years older than the Masoretic Hebrew text, the letters yud and vav look almost identical, so it is possible, from the Dead Sea Scrolls to read this However, a scroll from the same era found at nearby Nahal Hever known as 5\/6HevPsalms reads, \u201cThey have pierced my hands and my feet\u201d!<sup>12<\/sup> Though the documents were found in 1951 or 52, this reading was not discovered until around 1997! Further, it did not appear in print until <\/em>The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible<em> was published in 1999. The implications are enormous. Here we have a Hebrew text over 1,000 years older than the oldest known copy of the standard Hebrew Masoretic text, which supports the reading found in the Greek Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate. No longer can Hebrew scholars claim that the LXX, Syriac, and Vulgate are here faulty reflections of the original Hebrew.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John wrote about encounters between Jesus\u2019 The form is usually taken to mean \u201cto barter for,\u201d which would be an expression showing great callousness to a friend (NIV). NEB has \u201churl yourselves,\u201d perhaps following the LXX \u201crush against.\u201d but G. R. Driver thinks that meaning is very precarious.
