Paul was not the only one to write about the end of fear<\/a>.\u00a0 John also wrote, There is no fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in love, but perfect love drives out fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), because fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) has to do with punishment<\/em> (\u03ba\u1f79\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03cc\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0The one who fears<\/em> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) punishment has not been perfected in love<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is as good to hear as Paul\u2019s statement, For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But I wonder about the fear of the Lord since the concept continued into the New Testament.<\/p>\n

Therefore, because we know the fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of the Lord<\/em>, Paul wrote the Corinthians, we try to persuade people<\/em>\u20263<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And to slaves in Colossae he wrote, obey your earthly masters in every respect, not only when they are watching<\/em>4<\/sup><\/a> \u2013 like those who are strictly people-pleasers \u2013 but with a sincere heart, fearing<\/em> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) the Lord<\/em>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0I have begun to track fear<\/em> through the Old Testament to attempt to understand this better.<\/p>\n

The first occurrence was from the mouth of Adam after he ate the forbidden fruit, \u201cI heard you moving about in the orchard, and I was afraid<\/em> (y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u059b\u05d0<\/a>) because I was naked, so I hid,\u201d<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a> he said to the Lord God moving about in the orchard at the breezy time of the day<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> used the Greek word \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> for the Hebrew word, the passive form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> the root of \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This form does not occur in the New Testament but is close to, For I was afraid<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) of you, because you are a severe man<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is apparently the middle voice<\/a> of \u03c6\u03ad\u03b2\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9.<\/p>\n

Next God spoke what would become the most common divine greeting to those born of Adam, \u201cFear<\/em> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05a3\u05d0<\/a>) not, Abram!\u00a0 I am your shield and the one who will reward you in great abundance.\u201d<\/em>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the Septuagint<\/a> the rabbis chose the Greek word \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>.\u00a0 The first usage of this form in the New Testament was in Mark\u2019s account of the synagogue ruler Jairus.\u00a0 He fell at Jesus\u2019 feet and said, \u201cMy little daughter is near death.\u00a0 Come and lay your hands on her so that<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a> she may be healed and live.\u201d<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But, people came from the synagogue ruler\u2019s house saying, \u201cYour daughter has died.\u00a0 Why trouble the teacher any longer?\u201d \u00a0But Jesus, paying no attention<\/em>13<\/sup><\/a> to what was said, told the synagogue ruler, \u201cDo not be afraid<\/em> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>); just believe<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u201d14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

And here by faith in the revelation of Scripture I can begin to analyze the beginning of fear from its end.\u00a0 <\/em>Jesus offered faith to Jairus as an antidote, or a preoccupation, to his fear of the revealed facts.\u00a0 (Jesus apparently raised his daughter from death.)\u00a0 This is the faith Adam lacked.\u00a0\u00a0 Though he had unimaginable experience of God\u2019s generous provision, Adam\u2019s faith was in his own efforts to keep God\u2019s commandment.\u00a0 Once that commandment was broken he feared punishment.\u00a0 Whatever sonship he experienced was forfeit and he was given over to a spirit of slavery leading to fear.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Sarah didn\u2019t believe the word of the Lord when it was said, I will surely return to you when the season comes round again, and your wife Sarah will have a son<\/em>,15<\/sup><\/a> but trusted in her long experience of barrenness.\u00a0 She laughed to herself, thinking, \u201cAfter I am worn out will I have pleasure, especially when my husband is old too?\u201d<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>The Lord confronted Abraham about her.\u00a0 Then Sarah lied, saying, \u201cI did not laugh,\u201d because she was afraid <\/em>(y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u0591\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>).\u00a0 But the Lord said, \u201cNo! You did laugh.\u201d<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0While Adam\u2019s fear prompted him to hide from the all-seeing God, Sarah\u2019s fear persuaded her to lie to the all-knowing God.<\/p>\n

The Hebrew word translated afraid<\/em> above was the Greek word \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>\u00a0in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 This form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> was first used in Matthew\u2019s narrative of Joseph\u2019s, Mary\u2019s and Jesus\u2019 return from Egypt.\u00a0 After Herod had died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt saying, \u201cGet up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child\u2019s life are dead.\u201d \u00a0So he got up and took the child and his mother and returned<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a> to the land of Israel.\u00a0 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over<\/em>19<\/sup><\/a> Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) to go there.\u00a0 After being warned in a dream, he went to the regions of Galilee<\/em>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Joseph\u2019s fear of Archelaus was apparently warranted since God warned him in a dream.<\/p>\n

<\/a>I get an image of the nature of Lot\u2019s faith in the Lord from the next occurrence of fear<\/em> (Genesis 19:15-17).<\/p>\n

At dawn the angels hurried Lot along, saying, \u201cGet going! \u00a0Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else you will be destroyed when the city is judged!\u201d \u00a0When Lot hesitated, the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters because the Lord had compassion on them. \u00a0They led them away and placed them outside the city [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0When they had brought them outside, they said, \u201cRun for your lives! \u00a0Don\u2019t look behind you or stop anywhere in the valley! \u00a0Escape to the mountains or you will be destroyed!\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lot apparently sensed the anxiousness in the angels\u2019 tone of voice, but misunderstood its significance.\u00a0 \u201cNo, please, Lord!\u201d<\/em> [Table<\/a>] he said. \u00a0Your servant has found favor with you, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. \u00a0But I am not able to escape to the mountains because this disaster will overtake me and I\u2019ll die\u201d<\/em> [Table<\/a>].21<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Lot assumed that the angels\u2019 anxiety was provoked by Lot\u2019s relative slowness. \u00a0He reasoned that he should seek closer shelter. \u00a0\u201cLook, this town over here is close enough to escape to, and it\u2019s just a little one. \u00a0Let me go there. \u00a0It\u2019s just a little place, isn\u2019t it? \u00a0Then I\u2019ll survive.\u201d<\/em>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cVery well,\u201d he replied, \u201cI will grant this request too and will not overthrow the town you mentioned.\u201d<\/em>23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then the angel revealed that he was anxious to fulfill the will of the Lord.\u00a0 \u201cRun there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.\u201d<\/em>24<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Lot made it safely to Zoar, and Zoar was spared from destruction when the Lord rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah<\/em>.25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But, Lot went up from Zoar with his two daughters and settled in the mountains because he was afraid<\/em> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u0596\u05d0<\/a>) to live in Zoar. \u00a0So he lived in a cave with his two daughters<\/em>.26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This, too, was \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> in the Septuagint<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The second usage of this form in the New Testament was, Although Herod wanted to kill John<\/em> [because John had repeatedly told him, \u201cIt is not lawful for you to have<\/em> {Herodias, his brother Philip\u2019s wife<\/em>}27<\/sup><\/a>.\u201d],28<\/sup><\/a> he feared<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>) the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet<\/em>.29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, Herod did not believe the Lord that he should not have taken his brother\u2019s wife.\u00a0 He feared the wrath of his people if he killed one they considered a prophet.\u00a0 Similarly, Lot did not believe that he would make it safely to the mountains and asked for Zoar to be spared as a place of refuge.\u00a0 When that request was granted he did not believe that Zoar would continue to be spared from destruction and fled to the mountains.<\/p>\n

There is a pattern of sorts here.\u00a0 Those born of Adam fear God, but not in a good way.\u00a0 It is not a fear that leads to faith in Him.\u00a0 It prompts them to hide or lie or flee from his protection.\u00a0 It is a fear of punishment.\u00a0 They are not perfected in love.\u00a0 And I take this to mean they are not led by the Spirit, they do not experience that continuous stream of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control [Table<\/a>]30<\/sup><\/a> that flows from Him.<\/p>\n
