In context Peter invited his fellow descendants of Israel to repent<\/em>, change their minds about Jesus, and turn back <\/em>from their rejection of Him.\u00a0 This is something more than ancient history for me.\u00a0 I rejected Jesus as thoroughly as any Jew present at Jesus\u2019 trial before Pilate<\/a>, and not for another would-be-messiah<\/a>.\u00a0 I thought God could vanish in a \u201cpuff of logic<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

If he could not punish me to defend his holiness, if his holiness was little more than his own self-interest, maybe he wasn\u2019t God at all.\u00a0 That\u2019s when it hit.\u00a0 Oh my God, he isn\u2019t at all!\u00a0 And he never was.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t happy with the conclusion, but at the time, I couldn\u2019t escape its logic:\u00a0 God did not punish me for sin, therefore God was not.[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He has spent the past fifty years of my life proving me wrong, and I am very grateful.\u00a0 So Peter\u2019s invitation to repent and turn back <\/em>from my ignorance and unbelief is welcome to my ear, \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f10\u03be\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c6\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd \u03c4\u1f70\u03c2 \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2: in order to blot out, wipe away, obliterate, destroy, wipe out, erase, delete, re-plaster, plaster over, wash over [my] sins, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and so that he may send the Messiah appointed for<\/em> [me]\u2014that is, Jesus<\/em>.\u00a0 Peter continued (Acts 3:21-23 NET):<\/p>\n

This one heaven must receive until the time all things are restored, which God declared from times long ago through[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> his holy[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> prophets. \u00a0Moses[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said,[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u2018The Lord your[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. \u00a0You must obey him in everything he tells you. \u00a0Every person who[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> does not obey that prophet will be destroyed and thus removed from the people.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You must obey him in everything he tells you<\/em>,[11]<\/sup><\/a> sounds like something I must do.\u00a0 The Greek word translated You must obey<\/em> is \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 It is in the future tense<\/a>, the middle voice<\/a> (which allows for some participation of the subject you<\/em>, 2nd<\/sup> person plural) and the indicative mood<\/a>.\u00a0 In other words, Peter promised his listeners in the name of God that they at some point in their future would hear Jesus, him shall ye hear<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Perhaps the last phrase\u2014\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u1f02\u03bd \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3 \u03c0\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2 (in everything he tells you<\/em>)\u2014was an extrapolation from Deuteronomy 18:18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it was something Jesus told Peter personally or something he learned from his own experience denying Jesus, because in his own ignorance and unbelief he had refused to believe everything Jesus told him (Matthew 16:21-23 NET).<\/p>\n

From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed and on the third day be raised. \u00a0\u00a0So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: \u201cGod forbid, Lord! \u00a0This must not happen to you!\u201d \u00a0But he turned and said to Peter, \u201cGet behind me, Satan! \u00a0You are a stumbling block to me<\/a> because you are not setting your mind on God\u2019s interests, but on man\u2019s [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
