53:10-12, Part 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a continuation of a consideration of the differences between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint, a translation of the Hebrew before Israel rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>) from<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I had begun to consider other occurrences of forms <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/afa.html#afairew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/05\/13\/isaiah-5310-12-part-7\/#_Tableb\">Table<\/a>) in Isaiah to get a feel for any potential relationship between <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/afe.html#afelein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h3027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9<\/a> (<em>y\u0101\u1e0f<\/em>).\u00a0 Three of those occurrences also contain forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h3027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3<\/a> (<em>y\u0101\u1e0f<\/em>).\u00a0 In the first under consideration \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u0599 was translated with a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ce.html#ceir\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/05\/13\/isaiah-5310-12-part-7\/#_first\">essay<\/a>.\u00a0 The second clause had <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uper.html#uperhfanous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b7\u03c6\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uper.html#uperhfanos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03ae\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in the BLB Septuagint translated <em>who are arrogant<\/em>, and \u1f51\u03c0\u03b7\u03c6\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 in the Elpenor Septuagint where the clause was not translated into English.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t find \u1f51\u03c0\u03b7\u03c6\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 listed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphfanous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> I\u2019ve been using either.\u00a0 It is found, however, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christopherklitou.com\/old_testament_greek_english_isaiah_1-10.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Testament Septuagint<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christopherklitou.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Orthodox Pages<\/a> online, translated <em>the proud<\/em>, and the clause reads: <em>and humble all the proud<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>He has demonstrated power with his arm; he has scattered those whose pride wells up <\/em>(\u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b7\u03c6\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03ae\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2) <em>from the sheer arrogance of their hearts<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Mary said.\u00a0 Paul included \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b7\u03c6\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 (<em>arrogant<\/em>) in a list describing those who had been given <em>over to a depraved mind<\/em> because <em>they did not see fit to acknowledge God<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> and in another list describing people Timothy should <em>avoid<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Both James and Peter quoted the proverb, <em>God opposes the proud<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uper.html#uperhfanois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b7\u03c6\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03ae\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2), <em>but he gives grace to the humble<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So God<em> will turn <\/em>[his]<em> hand <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ce.html#ceira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03b5\u1fd7\u03c1\u1f71<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#mou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>) <em>against <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epi.html#epi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f76<\/a>)<em> you<\/em>\u2026<em>and humble all who are arrogant<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> so that He may give <em>grace to the humble<\/em>, those who were formerly <em>arrogant<\/em>.\u00a0 It is better to be humbled by God than by someone less loving, less kind, less gentle.\u00a0 Given my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/\">background<\/a> I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/11\/09\/isaiah-5310-12-part-3\/#_personal\">think<\/a> even the rebellious\u2014<em>and I will destroy the rebellious<\/em>\u2014should prefer to be destroyed by God lest their ignorance and unbelief keep them fleeing from Him in terror: <em>The person who does not love does not know God because God is love<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My own experience of his love led to the following insight:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Now I realize that Dan the atheist who did not hear Jesus was destroyed and thus removed from the people only to be replaced by Dan the believer who hears Jesus and lives to know Him better.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Peter the ignorant unbeliever who denied even knowing the crucified Christ was also destroyed and thus removed from the people only to be replaced by Peter the Apostle who proclaimed this Gospel message (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+3:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 3:11-26<\/a>) to all who would hear.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>I will<\/em>\u2026<em>purely purge away thy dross<\/em> (Tanakh) seems to be a metaphor unpacked in the Septuagint: <em>I<\/em>\u2026<em>will burn you to bring about purity<\/em> (BLB), <em>I will<\/em>\u2026<em>purge thee completely<\/em> (Elpenor).\u00a0 The Greek word translated <em>will burn <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#purwsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#purow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>). \u00a0Peter wrote (2 Peter 3:10-13 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the day of the Lord will come like a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/01\/04\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn15\">thief<\/a>; when it comes, the heavens will disappear with a horrific noise, and the celestial bodies will <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/01\/04\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn16\">melt away<\/a> in a blaze, and the earth and every deed done on it will be <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/01\/04\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn17\">laid bare<\/a>. \u00a0Since all these things are to melt away in this <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/01\/04\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn18\">manner<\/a>, what sort of people must <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/01\/04\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn19\">you<\/a> be, conducting your lives in holiness and godliness<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/01\/04\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation-revisited-part-2\/#_Table27\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, while waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God? \u00a0Because of this day, the heavens will be burned up <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#puroumenoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em> and dissolve, and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze! \u00a0But, according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness truly resides.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the meanings of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#purow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a> is \u201cto test by fire; be fire-tested.\u201d\u00a0 Peter chose a related noun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#purwsei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#purwsis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03cd\u03c1\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) when he wrote: <em>Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirasmon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirasmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>by fire<\/em> (\u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03cd\u03c1\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) <em>is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/12\/isaiah-5210-12-part-8\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As he had written earlier (1 Peter 1:6, 7 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This brings you great joy, although you may have to<em><a
