I\u2019m studying fear<\/em> in the Old Testament to better understand how fear has ended in Christ<\/a> yet the concept of fearing God continued in the New Testament.\u00a0 Peter wrote, Honor all people, love<\/a> the family of believers, fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) God, honor the king<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And in Revelation an angel with an eternal gospel to proclaim to<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a> those who live<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a> on the earth<\/em>4<\/sup><\/a> said, Fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has arrived, and worship the one who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water!<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Abraham moved to Gerar and continued to pass off his beautiful wife Sarah as his sister.\u00a0 So Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent for Sarah and took her<\/em>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But God appeared to Abimelech in a dream at night and said to him<\/em> (Genesis 20:3-7 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is someone else\u2019s wife [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0Now Abimelech had not gone near her.\u00a0 He said, \u201cLord, would you really slaughter an innocent nation? [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0Did Abraham not say to me, \u2018She is my sister\u2019? \u00a0And she herself said, \u2018He is my brother.\u2019 \u00a0I have done this with a clear conscience and with innocent hands!\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0Then in the dream God replied to him, \u201cYes, I know that you have done this with a clear conscience. \u00a0That is why I have kept you from sinning against me and why I did not allow you to touch her [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But now give back the man\u2019s wife. \u00a0Indeed he is a prophet and he will pray for you; thus you will live. \u00a0But if you don\u2019t give her back, know that you will surely die along with all who belong to you\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Early in the morning Abimelech summoned all his servants.\u00a0 When he told them about all these things, they were terrified<\/em> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05a5\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>).7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> chose \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> (plus \u03c3\u03c6\u03cc\u03b4\u03c1\u03b1<\/a>, very<\/em>) here, the 3rd<\/sup> person plural form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 The first occurrence of this form in the New Testament is in Matthew\u2019s account of the healing of the paralytic (Matthew 9:2-8 NET).<\/p>\n

Just then some people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.\u00a0 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, \u201cHave courage, son!\u00a0 Your<\/a> sins are forgiven<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0Then some of the experts in the law said<\/a> to themselves, \u201cThis man is blaspheming!\u201d \u00a0When Jesus saw their reaction he said, \u201cWhy do you<\/a> respond with evil in your hearts? \u00a0Which is easier, to say, \u2018Your<\/a> sins are forgiven<\/a>\u2019 or to say, \u2018Stand up<\/a> and walk\u2019? [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>on earth to forgive sins\u201d \u2013 then he said to the paralytic \u2013 \u201cStand up, take your stretcher, and go home.\u201d \u00a0And he stood up and went home. \u00a0When the crowd saw this, they were afraid<\/a> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> and honored (\u1f10\u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>God who had given such authority (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> to men [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have already written<\/a>8<\/sup><\/a> that I think the repetition of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>\u00a0(a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) indicates that it was the authority to forgive sins that caused the crowd to fear and to honor God.\u00a0 The word translated honored<\/em> above is the same glory<\/em> that those under God\u2019s wrath in Romans 1:21 withheld from God when they did not glorify him<\/em><\/a>.9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And this connection of fear and honor gives me a clue to better understanding, especially when I return to Abimelech\u2019s rebuke of Abraham (Genesis 20:9, 10 NET).<\/p>\n

Abimelech summoned Abraham and said to him, \u201cWhat have you done to us?\u00a0 What sin did I commit against you that would cause you to bring such great guilt on me and my kingdom? \u00a0You have done things to me that should not be done!\u201d \u00a0Then Abimelech asked Abraham, \u201cWhat prompted you to do this thing?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Abraham replied, \u201cBecause I thought, \u2018Surely no one fears<\/em> (yir’\u00e2<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea<\/a>) God in this place.\u00a0 They will kill me because of my wife.\u2019\u201d<\/em>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here, the rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> chose a different word entirely, \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 It is a compound of \u03b8\u03b5\u03cc\u03c2<\/a> and \u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 Negated as \u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a> this is the ungodliness<\/em> that prompted the revelation of God\u2019s wrath<\/a>.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In Abimelech and his people, then, I find a fear of punishment that led to obedience and more.\u00a0 Abimelech gave Sarah back to Abraham untouched.\u00a0 He also gave him sheep, cattle, and male and female servants <\/em>[Table<\/a>], and said, \u201cLook, my land is before you; live wherever you please<\/em>[Table<\/a>].\u201d<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, as well as his wife and female slaves so that they were able to have children. \u00a0For the Lord had caused infertility to strike every woman in the household of Abimelech because he took Sarah, Abraham\u2019s wife<\/em>.13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And here I think I see the beginning of the fear of punishment that played such a major, albeit imperfect, role in the keeping of the law.<\/p>\n

When Ishmael mocked Isaac, Sarah said to Abraham, \u201cBanish that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!\u201d<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Abraham wasn\u2019t happy about this at all, but complied when God said to him, \u201cDo not be upset about the boy or your slave wife. \u00a0Do all that Sarah is telling you because through Isaac your descendants will be counted <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0But I will also make the son of the slave wife into a great nation, for he is your descendant too.\u201d<\/em>15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Hagar and Ishmael wandered in the wilderness.\u00a0 When the water Abraham gave her was gone she shoved the child under one of the shrubs<\/em>,16<\/sup><\/a> his body apparently limp and lethargic from dehydration.\u00a0 She walked some distance away not wanting to watch her child die.\u00a0 But God heard the boy\u2019s voice.\u00a0 The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and asked her, \u201cWhat is the matter, Hagar?\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid <\/em>(y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u0594\u05d9<\/a>), for God has heard the boy\u2019s voice right where he is crying.<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This was \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in Greek in the Septuagint<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The second occurrence of this form in the New Testament was found in the story of Zechariah and the angelic announcement of his son\u2019s birth, John the Baptist.\u00a0 Zechariah, a priest, was chosen by lot<\/a> to enter the holy place of the Lord and burn incense<\/em>.18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

An angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense, appeared to him. \u00a0And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel, was seized with fear (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).<\/em> \u00a0But the angel said to him, \u201cDo not be afraid (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>),<\/em> Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son; you will name him John.\u00a0 Joy and gladness will come to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. \u00a0He must never drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth. \u00a0He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. \u00a0And he will go as forerunner before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.\u201d20<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Zechariah didn\u2019t believe the angel\u2019s message and was struck mute.\u00a0 The text doesn\u2019t say whether or not Hagar believed.\u00a0 But God was with the boy<\/em> [Ishmael] as he grew<\/em>,21<\/sup><\/a> as surely as John was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth (Luke 1:57-64 NET):<\/p>\n

Now the time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son. \u00a0Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. \u00a0On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they wanted to name him Zechariah after his father. \u00a0But his mother replied, \u201cNo! He must be named John.\u201d \u00a0They said22<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to her, \u201cBut none of23<\/sup><\/a><\/em> your relatives24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> bears this name.\u201d \u00a0So they made signs to the baby\u2019s father, inquiring what he wanted to name his son.25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, \u201cHis name26<\/sup><\/a><\/em> is John.\u201d \u00a0And they were all amazed. \u00a0Immediately Zechariah\u2019s mouth was opened and his tongue released, and he spoke, blessing God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied<\/em>27<\/sup><\/a> (Luke 1:67-79 NET):<\/p>\n

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, because he has come to help and has redeemed his people. \u00a0For he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the28<\/sup><\/a><\/em> house of his servant David,29<\/sup><\/a><\/em> as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago, that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us. \u00a0He has done this to show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant \u2013 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham. \u00a0This oath grants that we, being rescued from the hand of our30<\/sup><\/a><\/em> enemies, may serve him without fear (\u1f00\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>),\u00a0<\/em>in holiness and righteousness before him for as long as we live.31<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0And you,32<\/sup><\/a><\/em> child, will be called the prophet of the Most High.\u00a0 For you will go before33<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the Lord to prepare his ways, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins. \u00a0Because of our God\u2019s tender mercy the dawn will break upon34<\/sup><\/a><\/em> us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
