Peter\u2019s second Gospel proclamation concluded (Acts 3:24-26 NET):<\/p>\n

A survey of the prophecies to which Peter alluded would be interesting but I won\u2019t pursue it here.\u00a0 After a perfunctory disclaimer \u201cOld Testament messianic prophecies quoted in the New Testament<\/a>\u201d lists several.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The Greek word translated descendants <\/em>in the NET (KJV: seed<\/em>) was \u03c3\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03ad\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 I bring it up because Paul commented on it (Galatians 3:16 NET):<\/p>\n

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant (\u03c3\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9)<\/em>. \u00a0Scripture does not say, \u201cand to the descendants (\u03c3\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a plural form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03ad\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em>,\u201d referring to many, but \u201cand to your descendant (\u03c3\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9)<\/em>,\u201d referring to one, who is Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In context Peter\u2019s thought went from this singular descendant <\/em>(KJV: seed<\/em>) to a singular servant <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u1fd6\u03b4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>; KJV: Son<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Here I\u2019ll focus on God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your iniquities<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek word translated turning <\/em>was not a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> or a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9<\/a> (Acts 3:19 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore repent (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> and turn back (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c8\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9)<\/em> so that your sins may be wiped out\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u1f73\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 I can\u2019t help but think that Peter or the Holy Spirit alluded to a then present fulfillment of the prophecy Paul quoted (Romans 11:26, 27 NET):<\/p>\n

And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: \u201cThe Deliverer will come out of Zion;[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he will remove (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u1f73\u03c8\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9)<\/em> ungodliness from Jacob.\u00a0 And this is my covenant with them, when I take away their sins.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ve never understood this quite so clearly.\u00a0 And the deliverer shall come for Sion\u2019s sake <\/em>(English Elpenor) the Septuagint reads.\u00a0 That time was past when Paul wrote to those in Rome who believed Jesus: the deliverer <\/em>had already come for Sion\u2019s sake <\/em>and Israel in large part (Romans 11:2-5<\/a>) had rejected Him (Romans 11:11-15 NET).<\/p>\n

I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they?\u00a0 Absolutely not!\u00a0 But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous. \u00a0Now if their transgression means riches for the world and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full restoration bring?<\/p>\n

Now<\/a> I am speaking to you Gentiles.\u00a0 Seeing that<\/a> I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, if somehow I could provoke my people to jealousy and save some of them. \u00a0For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance<\/a> be but life from the dead? [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul changed \u1f15\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f15\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>), for Sion\u2019s sake<\/em>, to \u1f10\u03ba<\/a>, out of Zion<\/em>.\u00a0 Since Israel rejected their deliverer\/Redeemer\/protector He no longer came exclusively for Sion\u2019s sake<\/em>.\u00a0 For then, in Paul\u2019s present, the Gospel was proceeding out of Zion <\/em>to the whole world.\u00a0 The Masoretic text reads to Zion<\/em>, exclusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This deliverer shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob<\/em> (English Elpenor) as confirmed by the Holy Spirit through Paul: he will remove ungodliness from Jacob<\/em>.\u00a0 But the Masoretes\u2019 revision of the Scriptures according to masorah<\/a> (\u201ctradition\u201d) limits this Redeemer unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob<\/em> (Tanakh, KJV), or this protector to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds <\/em>(NET).\u00a0 In other words, his impact is limited currently to that select subset (Romans 11:5-7<\/a>) of the whole of Jacob.<\/p>\n

And this shall be my covenant with them, said the Lord<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Paul veered away from the rest of this quote (Isaiah 59:21b English Elpenor):<\/p>\n

My Spirit which is upon thee, and the words which I have put in thy mouth, shall never fail from thy mouth, nor from the mouth of thy seed, for the Lord has spoken it, henceforth and for ever.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Since official Israel rejected Jesus (Acts 4:1-4<\/a>) this promise doesn\u2019t yet apply to all Israel.\u00a0 So Paul and the Holy Spirit reiterated when it will apply: when I take away their sins<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Still, the Masoretic text speaks truthfully to contemporary Israel: them that turn from transgression in Jacob <\/em>(namely, turn from their rejection of Jesus as Messiah) will receive the Redeemer, and He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob<\/em>.\u00a0 God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your iniquities<\/em>,[7]<\/sup><\/a> Peter promised in the name of the Lord Jesus.<\/p>\n

The Greek word translated iniquities <\/em>was \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 Matthew recorded the following (Matthew 22:15-21 NET):<\/p>\n

Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap [Jesus]<\/em> with his own words. \u00a0They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, \u201cTeacher, we know that you are truthful and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. \u00a0You do not court anyone\u2019s favor because you show no partiality. \u00a0Tell us then, what do you think? \u00a0Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?\u201d<\/p>\n

But Jesus realized their evil intentions (\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> and said, \u201cHypocrites! \u00a0Why are you testing me? \u00a0Show me the coin used for the tax.\u201d \u00a0So they brought him a denarius. \u00a0Jesus said to them, \u201cWhose image is this, and whose inscription?\u201d \u00a0They replied, \u201cCaesar\u2019s.\u201d \u00a0He said to them, \u201cThen give to Caesar the things that are Caesar\u2019s, and to God the things that are God\u2019s.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus told his disciples: What comes out of a person defiles him.\u00a0 For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality<\/a>, theft<\/a>, murder, adultery<\/a>, greed, evil <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03af\u03b1), deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0All these evils<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f70<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) come from within and defile a person<\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

As he spoke, a[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Pharisee invited[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jesus to have a meal with him, so he went in and took his place at the table. \u00a0The Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus did not first wash his hands before the meal. \u00a0But the Lord said to him, \u201cNow you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness (\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03af\u03b1).[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For the love of Christ controls us<\/em>, Paul wrote of the apostles, since we have concluded this, that<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a> Christ died for all; therefore all have died. \u00a0And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The love of Christ<\/em> was \u1f21<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> in Greek.\u00a0 Given the way Paul described and defined \u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7 (1 Corinthians 13<\/a>) I think this is shorthand for the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23<\/a>).\u00a0 Surely, it is Christ\u2019s \u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7 in the sense that, as Jesus said, The Father and I are one<\/em>,[14]<\/sup><\/a> and as He prayed, Everything I have belongs to you, and everything you have belongs to me<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But perhaps more to the point for believers, this is Christ\u2019s \u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7 in the sense that it is the same love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control<\/em>[16]<\/sup><\/a> [Table<\/a>] that \u201ccontrolled\u201d Jesus.<\/p>\n

I used the past tense here only to accentuate the time He walked as a man on earth, rather than to suggest that love <\/em>no longer controls <\/em>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1f73\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) Him.\u00a0 So then, if anyone is in Christ<\/em>, Paul continued (2 Corinthians 5:17-21 NET):<\/p>\n
