My mother went to be with the Lord<\/a> last month.\u00a0 Per her instructions my brother and I officiated at her funeral service and graveside.\u00a0 She had preplanned everything but had left me free to choose the Scripture reading and some commentary.\u00a0 Her theme verse was Isaiah 57:15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

In her notes for the funeral service she had put resurrect <\/em>in parentheses after both the first occurrence of \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u0599<\/a> (to revive<\/em>) and the second \u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u0596\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/a> (and to revive<\/em>).\u00a0 I\u2019m recounting my thought process in this essay so the tables I made while studying are included in this site.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d says the Spirit, \u201cso they can rest[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> from their hard work, because[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> their deeds will follow them.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had a minor panic attack here.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t convince myself that \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u0599 (a form of \u05d7\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>; to revive<\/em>) referred to the resurrection <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f71\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) at the last day <\/em><\/a>[11]<\/sup><\/a> or the first resurrection<\/em> (\u1f21<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u1f71\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 \u1f21 \u03c0\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c4\u03b7<\/a>).[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It seemed more likely to refer to the many revivals that result from taking up <\/em>[one\u2019s] cross daily<\/a><\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 That seemed too heady of an argument for a funeral when hope and comfort are the order of the day.\u00a0 And I certainly didn\u2019t want to argue with my mother\u2019s interpretation of Scripture over her corpse.\u00a0 So I began to track the forms of \u05d7\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> through the Old Testament:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This is one of the more common forms in the Old Testament: \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d7\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9<\/a> was translated \u1f14\u03b6\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a> (a form of \u03b6\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 The same form \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u0596\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/a> as was found in Isaiah 57:15, however, was translated saving <\/em>or sparing <\/em>when Lot spoke with the angels who rescued his family from Sodom before its destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I was almost sidetracked here.\u00a0 The Hebrew word \u05d7\u05b7\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8\u0597<\/a> (\u1e25ese\u1e0f<\/em>), mercy <\/em>(Tanakh), kindness <\/em>(NET), translated \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>), righteousness <\/em>in the Septuagint arrested me.\u00a0 I had grown up believing that mercy and kindness were opposed<\/a> to righteousness.\u00a0 I began to wonder how much theology in the New Testament had tumbled out of this equation.\u00a0 But Mom\u2019s funeral was less than a week away, so I returned to the task at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
