What then shall we say about these things?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 If God is for <\/em>(\u1f51\u03c0\u1f72\u03c1<\/a>) us, who can be against <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u1fbf<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac<\/a>) us?<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It would be a mistake to think that Paul implied that no one is, or would be, against us.\u00a0 Jesus said, \u201cDo not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth.\u00a0 I have not come to bring peace but a sword. \u00a0For I have come to set a man against <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a>) his father, a daughter against <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a>) her mother, and a daughter-in-law against <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a>) her mother-in-law, and a man\u2019s enemies <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) will be the members of his household<\/a>\u201d<\/em> [Table<\/a>].2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The point of Paul\u2019s rhetorical question is, who are they who would array themselves against us compared to God?<\/p>\n

Though they do not measure up to God they are the enemies we love.\u00a0 But<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a> I say to you who are listening<\/em>, Jesus said: Love your enemies<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.\u201d<\/em>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is a mysterious blessing that we learn this love at home, with our families, in our own households.<\/p>\n

Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son<\/em>, Paul continued to elaborate how God is for<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f72\u03c1<\/a>) us<\/em>, but<\/a> gave him up for<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f72\u03c1<\/a>) us all \u2013 how will he not also, along with him, freely give us all things?<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your<\/a> sins<\/a>, and you will receive the gift<\/em> (\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>) of the Holy Spirit<\/em>,6<\/sup><\/a> Peter ended his first sermon on Pentecost. \u00a0Paul indicated that those who trust in Jesus receive the abundance of grace and of the gift<\/em> (\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of form of \u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u03ac<\/a>) of righteousness<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I became<\/a> a servant of this gospel<\/em>, Paul wrote the Ephesians, according to the gift<\/em> (\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>) of God\u2019s grace that was given<\/a> to me by the exercise of his power<\/em>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When Paul enumerated the gifts of God\u2019s grace for the Corinthians9<\/sup><\/a> he went on to describe a way that is beyond<\/em>\u00a0(\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u1fbf<\/a>)\u00a0comparison<\/em>,10<\/sup><\/a> the love11<\/sup><\/a> that fulfills<\/a> the law, the gift of righteousness, the fruit of the Spirit, the essence of what it means to be led12<\/sup><\/a> by the gift of the Holy Spirit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As Paul wrote the Ephesians, For by grace you are saved through faith<\/a>, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift<\/em> (\u03b4\u1ff6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) of God <\/em>[Table<\/a>]; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. \u00a0For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them<\/em>.13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Who will bring any charge against God\u2019s elect <\/em>(\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)?<\/em> Paul continued in Romans.\u00a0 Of course, many will presume, but who are they compared to God?\u00a0 It is God who justifies<\/em>.14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And yet the elect are not smug masters of the universe (Colossians 3:12-17 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore, as the elect (\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy<\/a>, kindness (\u03c7\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>), <\/em>humility, gentleness<\/a> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u1fe3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>), <\/em>and patience (\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), <\/em>bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if someone happens to have a complaint against anyone else. \u00a0Just as the Lord<\/a> has forgiven you, so you also forgive others [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And to all these virtues15<\/sup><\/a><\/em> add16<\/sup><\/a><\/em> love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>), <\/em>which17<\/sup><\/a><\/em> is the perfect bond. \u00a0Let the peace (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) <\/em>of Christ18<\/sup><\/a><\/em> be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful. \u00a0Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns,19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and spiritual songs,20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> all with grace21<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in your hearts22<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to God. \u00a0And whatever23<\/sup><\/a><\/em> you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the Father through him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To clothe myself with a heart of mercy<\/em> (\u03c3\u03c0\u03bb\u03ac\u03b3\u03c7\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03c4\u03b9\u03c1\u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>) is an interesting word picture.\u00a0 I am to clothe myself with something internal, cover my naked ambition one might say with Christlikeness, the fruit of his Spirit (Galatians 5:13-16, 22-26).<\/p>\n

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity to indulge your flesh, but through love serve one another. \u00a0For the whole law can be summed up<\/a> in a single commandment, namely, \u201cYou must love your neighbor as yourself<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u201d [Addendum 1\/1\/2025<\/b>: Table<\/a> comparing Paul’s Greek to the Septuagint]<\/em>. \u00a0However, if you continually bite and devour one another, beware that you are not consumed by<\/a> one another [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh\u2026the fruit of the Spirit is love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>),<\/em> joy, peace (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>),<\/em> patience (\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>),<\/em> kindness (\u03c7\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>),<\/em> goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>),<\/em> and self-control. \u00a0Against such things there is no law [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Now those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. \u00a0If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit. \u00a0Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, being jealous of one another.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Who is the one who will condemn?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 Again, many will condemn, but who are they by comparison?\u00a0 Christ is the one who died (and more than that<\/a>, he was raised), who is at the right hand of God, and who also is interceding for us<\/em>.25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though many will try to bring a charge or condemn, who will actually prevail?\u00a0 Who will separate us from the love of Christ?\u00a0 Will trouble, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? \u00a0As it is written,<\/em> \u201cFor your sake<\/a> we encounter death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered<\/em><\/strong>\u201d [Table<\/a>].26<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul quoted from Psalm 44.\u00a0 In the Psalm the experience of death was viewed in confusion, as an evil, a lament, a plea to, or a rebuke of, God (Psalm 44:20-24 NET):<\/p>\n

If we had rejected our God, and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, would not God discover it, for he knows one\u2019s thoughts? \u00a0Yet because of you we are killed all day long; we are treated like sheep at the slaughtering block (Table<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0Rouse yourself! \u00a0Why do you sleep, O Lord?\u00a0 Wake up! \u00a0Do not reject us forever! \u00a0Why do you look the other way, and ignore the way we are oppressed and mistreated?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul\u2019s attitude about death in the Gospel<\/a> was entirely different (2 Corinthians 4:7-11 NET):<\/p>\n

But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that the extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. \u00a0We are experiencing trouble on every side, but are not crushed; we are perplexed, but not driven to despair; we are persecuted, but not abandoned; we are knocked down, but not destroyed, always carrying around in our body the death of Jesus,27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our body. \u00a0For we who are alive are constantly being handed over to death for Jesus\u2019 sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our mortal body.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

No, in all these things we have complete victory through him who loved us!<\/em> Paul continued in Romans. \u00a0For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor heavenly rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord<\/em>.28<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
