This is the first Scripture reading from my mother\u2019s funeral.\u00a0 I selected passages that contained forms of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> to describe resurrection from the dead<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I have come down from heaven<\/em> [Jesus said] not to do my own will but the will of the one<\/a> who sent me.\u00a0 Now this is the will of the one who sent me\u2014that I should not lose one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all up <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) at the last day.\u00a0 For<\/a> this is the will of my Father<\/a>\u2014for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) at the last day.\u201d<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus began to teach <\/em>[his disciples] that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by<\/a> the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law<\/a>, and be killed, and after three days rise again<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0He spoke openly about this.\u00a0 So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.\u00a0 But after turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a> and said,<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cGet behind me, Satan.\u00a0 You are not setting your mind on God\u2019s interests, but on man\u2019s<\/a>.\u201d<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

As<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a> they were coming down from<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> the mountain<\/em> [after Jesus\u2019 transfiguration], he gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had risen<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc7<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) from the dead.\u00a0 They kept this statement to themselves, discussing what this rising<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) from the dead meant<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Then Jesus took the twelve aside and said to them, \u201cLook, we are going up to Jerusalem,<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/a> and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.\u00a0 For he will be handed over to the Gentiles; he will be mocked, mistreated, and spat on.\u00a0 They will flog him severely and kill him.\u00a0 Yet on the third day he will rise again<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9).\u201d\u00a0 But the twelve understood none of these things.\u00a0 This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what Jesus meant<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Now on the first day of the week<\/em> [after Jesus\u2019 crucifixion], at early dawn<\/em>,[10]<\/sup><\/a> the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, but<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a> when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.\u00a0 While they were perplexed<\/em>[13]<\/sup><\/a> about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire.<\/em>[14]<\/sup><\/a> The women were terribly frightened and bowed their faces<\/em>[15]<\/sup><\/a> to the ground, but the men said<\/em>[16]<\/sup><\/a> to them, \u201cWhy do you look for the living among the dead?\u00a0 He is not here, but<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a> has been raised<\/em> (\u1f20\u03b3\u1f73\u03c1\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>)!\u00a0 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9).\u201d\u00a0 Then the women remembered his words, and when they returned from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest<\/em>\u2026.<\/p>\n

But these<\/em>[18]<\/sup><\/a> words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them.\u00a0 But Peter got up<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f70\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) and ran to the tomb.\u00a0 He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth;<\/em>[19]<\/sup><\/a> then he went home, wondering what had happened<\/em>.[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For they did not yet understand the scripture that Jesus must rise<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) from the dead<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

[Later Jesus appeared to them:] he said to them<\/em>,[22]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cThese are my<\/a> words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses<\/a> and the<\/a> prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled<\/em> [Table<\/a>].\u201d \u00a0Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures, and said to them, \u201cThus it stands written<\/a> that the Christ would suffer and would rise <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning<\/a> from Jerusalem.\u00a0 You<\/a> are<\/a> witnesses of these things.\u00a0 And look, I am sending you what my Father promised.\u00a0 But stay in the city<\/a> until you have been clothed with power from on high<\/em> [Table<\/a>].\u201d<\/em>[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I chose not to comment as my mother had written in her funeral notes, but did a second Scripture reading instead.\u00a0 My mind scatters in many directions simultaneously when I speak.\u00a0 Besides, my commentary was already embedded in my choice of Scriptures.<\/p>\n

[After receiving the Holy Spirit, Peter proclaimed:] \u201cMen of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds<\/a>, wonders<\/a>, and miraculous signs that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves<\/a> know\u2014this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God<\/a>, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands<\/a> of Gentiles <\/em>[Table<\/a>].\u00a0 But God raised him up<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9), having released him from the pains of death because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.\u00a0 For David<\/a> says about him<\/em>,[24]<\/sup><\/a> \u2018I saw<\/a> the Lord always in front of me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.\u00a0 Therefore my heart was glad<\/a> and my tongue rejoiced; my body also will live in hope, because you will not leave my soul in Hades<\/a>, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay<\/em> [Table<\/a>].\u00a0 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBrothers, I can speak confidently to you about our forefather David<\/a>, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.\u00a0 So then, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants<\/a> on his throne, David by foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he<\/a> was neither<\/a> abandoned<\/a> to Hades<\/a>, nor<\/a> did his body experience decay <\/em>[Table<\/a>].\u00a0 This Jesus God raised up <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9), and we are all witnesses of it.\u00a0 So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit<\/a> from the Father, he has poured out what you both<\/a> see and hear.\u00a0 For David<\/a> did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says,<\/em>[25]<\/sup><\/a> \u2018The Lord said to my lord, \u201cSit at my right hand<\/em> [Table<\/a>] until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet<\/a>.\u201d\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ.\u201d<\/em>[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

God raised him up<\/em> (\u1f24\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form \u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9) on<\/a> the third day<\/em> [Peter proclaimed the Gospel to Gentiles] and caused him to be seen<\/em> [Table<\/a>], not by all the people, but by us, the witnesses God had already chosen, who ate and drank with him after he rose <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) from the dead.\u00a0 He commanded us to preach to the people and to warn them that he<\/a> is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead<\/em> [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0About him all the prophets testify, that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.\u201d<\/em>[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul <\/em>[formerly a persecutor of those who believed Jesus] went to the Jews in the synagogue <\/em>[at Thessalonica], as he customarily did, and on three Sabbath days he addressed<\/em>[28]<\/sup><\/a> them from the scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and to rise<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) from the dead, saying, \u201cThis Jesus<\/em>[29]<\/sup><\/a> I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.\u201d<\/em>[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The final Scripture reading was graveside:<\/p>\n

[Paul was invited to speak at the synagogue in Pisidian Antioch]: But regarding the fact that he has raised <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) Jesus from the dead, never again to be in a state of decay, God has spoken in this way: \u2018I will give you the holy and trustworthy promises made to David<\/a><\/em> [Table<\/a>].\u2019\u00a0 Therefore<\/a> he also says in another psalm, \u2018You will not permit your Holy One to experience decay<\/em> [Table<\/a>].\u2019\u00a0 For David<\/a>, after he had served God\u2019s purpose in his own generation, died, was buried with his ancestors, and experienced decay<\/em> [Table<\/a>], but the one whom God raised up did not experience decay.\u00a0 Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by this one everyone who believes is justified from everything from which the<\/a> law of Moses<\/a> could not justify you.\u00a0 Watch out, then, that what is spoken about by the prophets does not happen to you<\/a>: \u2018Look, you scoffers; be amazed and perish!\u00a0 For I am doing a work in your days, a work<\/a> you would never believe, even if someone tells you\u2019\u201d<\/em> [Table<\/a>].[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

No one can come to me<\/em> [Jesus said] unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I<\/em>[32]<\/sup><\/a> will raise him up<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) at<\/em>[33]<\/sup><\/a> the last day<\/em>.[34]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 [I never think of this verse without recalling its companion]: And I, when I am lifted up <\/em>(\u1f51\u03c8\u03c9\u03b8\u1ff6<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c8\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) from the earth <\/em>[Jesus said, to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to<\/em>[35]<\/sup><\/a> die<\/em>[36]<\/sup><\/a>] will draw all people to myself.\u201d<\/em>[37]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) again <\/em>[Paul wrote those who believed Jesus in Thessalonica] so also we believe that God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep <\/em>[through Jesus]. \u00a0For we tell you this by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not go ahead of those who have fallen asleep. \u00a0For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) first. \u00a0Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. \u00a0And so we will always be with the Lord. \u00a0Therefore encourage one another with these words<\/em>.[38]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
