<\/a>When there was a famine in the land Abraham\u2019s son Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines at Gerar<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Lord appeared to Isaac and said<\/em> (Genesis 26:2-5 NET):<\/p>\n

Do not go down to Egypt; settle down in the land that I will point out to you. \u00a0Stay in this land. \u00a0Then I will be with you and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will fulfill the solemn promise I made to your father Abraham. \u00a0I will multiply your descendants so they will be as numerous as the stars in the sky, and I will give them all these lands. \u00a0All the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants. \u00a0All this will come to pass because Abraham obeyed me and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he replied, \u201cShe is my sister.\u201d\u00a0 He was afraid<\/em> (y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0\u0599<\/a>) to say, \u201cShe is my wife,\u201d for he thought to himself, \u201cThe men of this place will kill me to get Rebekah because she is very beautiful.\u201d<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> chose \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) here.<\/p>\n

Peter and Jesus\u2019 other disciples were in a boat that was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.<\/em> \u00a0As the night was ending, Jesus<\/a> came<\/a> to them walking on the sea<\/a>. \u00a0When<\/a> the disciples saw him walking on the water<\/a> they were terrified and said, \u201cIt\u2019s a ghost!\u201d and cried out with fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>). But immediately<\/a> Jesus spoke to them: \u201cHave courage! \u00a0It is I. \u00a0Do not be afraid<\/em> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)\u201d [Table<\/a>].\u00a0 Peter said to him, \u201cLord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.\u201d \u00a0So he said, \u201cCome.\u201d \u00a0Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came<\/a> toward Jesus <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

After Isaac had been in Gerar a long time Abimelech looked out a window and saw him caressing Rebekah in a way that caused him to doubt that she was Isaac\u2019s sister.\u00a0 So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, \u201cShe is really your wife! \u00a0Why did you say, \u2018She is my sister\u2019?\u201d \u00a0Isaac replied, \u201cBecause I thought someone might kill me to get her.\u201d<\/em>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>Then Abimelech rebuked Isaac, What in the world have you done to us?\u00a0 One of the men might easily have had sexual relations with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

As Peter started to sink, he cried out, \u201cLord, save me!\u201d \u00a0Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, \u201cYou of little faith, why did you doubt?\u201d<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Eventually Isaac left Gerar and journeyed to Beer Sheba.\u00a0 The Lord appeared to him that night and said, \u201cI am the God of your father Abraham.\u00a0 Do not be afraid<\/em> (y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u0599<\/a>), for I am with you.\u00a0 I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.\u201d<\/em>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0The rabbis<\/a> chose \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) here.<\/p>\n

In the sixth month of Elizabeth\u2019s pregnancy <\/em>[John the Baptist\u2019s mother], the angel Gabriel was sent by<\/em>8<\/sup><\/a> God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,<\/em>9<\/sup><\/a> to a virgin engaged<\/em>10<\/sup><\/a> to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David,<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a> and the virgin\u2019s name was Mary. \u00a0The angel<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a> came to her and said, \u201cGreetings, favored one, the Lord is with you!\u201d<\/em>13<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a> she was greatly troubled by his<\/em>15<\/sup><\/a> words and began to wonder about the meaning of this greeting. \u00a0So the angel said to her, \u201cDo not be afraid <\/em>(\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), Mary, for you have found favor with God!<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Then Isaac built an altar there and worshiped the Lord.\u00a0 He pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well<\/em>.17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So Mary said, \u201cYes, I am a servant of the Lord; let this happen to me according to your word.\u201d<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Both Isaac and Mary responded admirably to the Lord\u2019s encouragement, Do not be afraid <\/em>(\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

<\/a>As Isaac\u2019s son Jacob fled (from his elder brother Esau\u2019s threat to kill him) to his mother Rebekah\u2019s brother Laban, he stopped for the night and had a dream (Genesis 28:12-15 NET).<\/p>\n

He saw a stairway erected on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens. \u00a0The angels of God were going up and coming down it and the Lord stood at its top. \u00a0He said, \u201cI am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac. \u00a0I will give you and your descendants the ground you are lying on. \u00a0Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. \u00a0All the families of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using your name and that of your descendants. \u00a0I am with you! \u00a0I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. \u00a0I will not leave you until I have done what I promised you!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then Jacob woke up and thought, \u201cSurely the Lord is in this place, but I did not realize it!\u201d \u00a0He was afraid <\/em>(y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u0599<\/a>) and said, \u201cWhat an awesome<\/em> (y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u0596\u05d0<\/a>) place this is! \u00a0This is nothing else than the house of God! \u00a0This is the gate of heaven!\u201d<\/em>19<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The word translated afraid<\/em> above was \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7 in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 The next occurrence of \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in the New Testament was in\u00a0John\u2019s Gospel.\u00a0 When Pilate heard what<\/em> [the Jewish leaders] said, he was more afraid<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) than ever<\/em>\u202620<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

We have a law<\/em>, the Jewish leaders had said, and according to our<\/a> law <\/em>[Jesus] ought to die, because he claimed to be the Son of God!<\/em>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Pilate went back inside and said to Jesus, \u201cWhere do you come from?\u201d But Jesus gave him no answer. \u00a0So Pilate said, \u201cDo you refuse to speak to me? \u00a0Don\u2019t you know I have the authority to release you, and to crucify you?\u201d \u00a0Jesus<\/a> replied<\/a>, \u201cYou would have no authority over me at all, unless it was given to you from above. \u00a0Therefore the one who handed me over<\/a> to you is guilty of greater sin\u201d<\/em> [Table<\/a>].22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>Pilate\u2019s fear did not prompt him to fall down at Jesus\u2019 feet and plead for mercy.\u00a0 But, From this point on, Pilate tried to release him<\/em>.23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In a similar way Jacob\u2019s fear prompted him to make a deal (Genesis 28:18-22 NET).<\/p>\n

Early in the morning Jacob took the stone he had placed near his head and set it up as a sacred stone. \u00a0Then he poured oil on top of it. \u00a0He called that place Bethel, although the former name of the town was Luz. \u00a0Then Jacob made a vow, saying, \u201cIf God is with me and protects me on this journey I am taking and gives me food to eat and clothing to wear, and I return safely to my father\u2019s home, then the Lord will become my God. \u00a0Then this stone that I have set up as a sacred stone will be the house of God, and I will surely give you back a tenth of everything you give me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The word translated awesome<\/em> in Genesis 28:17 (NET)<\/a> was \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 It does not occur in this form in the New Testament.\u00a0 It was only used three times by the writer of Hebrews (10:26, 27, 28-31; 12:18-21) :<\/p>\n

1)<\/em> For if we deliberately keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins is left for us, but only a certain fearful (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u1f70<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that will consume God\u2019s enemies.<\/p>\n

2)<\/em> Someone who rejected the law of Moses<\/a> was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0How much greater punishment do you think that person deserves who has contempt for the Son of God, and profanes the blood of the covenant that made him holy, and insults the Spirit of grace? \u00a0For we know the one who said, \u201cVengeance is mine<\/strong>, I will repay<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d <\/em>and again, \u201cThe Lord will judge his people<\/strong>\u201d [Table<\/a>].<\/em> It is a terrifying (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>thing to fall into the hands of the living God.<\/p>\n

3)<\/em> For you have not come to something24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> that can be touched, to a burning fire and darkness and gloom25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and a whirlwind and the blast of a trumpet and a voice uttering words such that those who heard begged to hear no more. \u00a0For they could not bear what was commanded: \u201cIf even an animal touches the mountain<\/em><\/strong>, it must be stoned<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d26<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0In fact, the scene was so27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> terrifying (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> that Moses28<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said, \u201cI shudder with fear <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f14\u03ba\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2)<\/a><\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Twenty years later, when Jacob fled from Laban with his wives, his children, his flocks, herds, and camels, he explained, \u201cI left secretly because I was afraid <\/em>(y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u0594\u05d0\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9<\/a>)!\u201d Jacob replied to Laban.\u00a0 \u201cI thought you might take your daughters away from me by force<\/em>.29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The phrase because I was afraid<\/em> was not translated in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 (Addendum 1\/13\/2025<\/strong>: The clause \u1f45\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, Because I was afraid<\/em>, is found in the Elpenor Septuagint<\/a>.) <\/a>But later as he approached his former home and learned that his brother Esau was coming out to meet him with four hundred men, Jacob was very afraid<\/em> (y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05a7\u05d0<\/a>) and upset.\u00a0 So he divided the people who were with him into two camps, as well as the flocks, herds, and camels<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cIf Esau attacks one camp,\u201d he thought, \u201cthen the other camp will be able to escape.\u201d<\/em>30<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

After he made these rudimentary preparations he prayed:\u00a0 \u201cO God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O Lord, you said to me, \u2018Return to your land and to your relatives and I will make you prosper.\u2019\u201d<\/em>31<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 He did not yet claim God as his own, but that is the only reference I see to his former oath.\u00a0 Gone is the pride that made that oath.\u00a0 In its place was an humble acknowledgement and request, \u201cI am not worthy of all the faithful love you have shown your servant. \u00a0With only my walking stick I crossed the Jordan, but now I have become two camps. \u00a0Rescue me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid<\/em>\u00a0(y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05a4\u05d0<\/a>)\u00a0he will come and attack me, as well as the mothers with their children.\u201d<\/em>32<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Twenty years on his own with God taught Jacob something about dealing with fear.\u00a0 Faithfully, he reminded God (and perhaps himself) of God\u2019s own words, \u201cBut you said, \u2018I will certainly make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand on the seashore, too numerous to count.\u2019\u201d<\/em>33<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jacob\u2019s fear of Esau\u2019s approach was \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 The fifth and final occurrence of \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> was in Luke\u2019s account of Paul\u2019s arrest in Jerusalem.\u00a0 The Roman commander probably saved Paul\u2019s life but was about to have him interrogated with torture.\u00a0 Then those who were about to interrogate him stayed away from him, and the commanding officer was frightened<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) when he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had had him tied up<\/em>.34<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Roman commander feared retribution for his own violation of Roman law.\u00a0 It makes me wonder if Jacob did not sense something of the justice of Esau\u2019s cause despite the overbearing nature of the imagined reprisal.\u00a0 As it turned out Esau had forgotten or forgiven his grievance against Jacob. \u00a0He welcomed his brother\u2019s homecoming (Genesis 33:4-16<\/a>).<\/p>\n
