Man: Bring her back online.[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A disembodied voice we\u2019ll soon recognize as the voice of Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright<\/a>), head of programming at Westworld, speaks.\u00a0 Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood<\/a>) sits naked in a chair.\u00a0 She is an android at Westworld, a host<\/em> as androids are called there.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t get cold, doesn\u2019t feel ashamed, doesn\u2019t feel a solitary thing that we haven\u2019t told it to.\u201d[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, Dolores sits naked because she is a slave.<\/p>\n

Man: Can you hear me?<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I\u2019m not feeling quite myself.<\/em><\/p>\n

Man: You can lose the accent.\u00a0 Do you know where you are?<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: I\u2019m in a dream.[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She is not.\u00a0 She is in one of the maintenance workrooms under Westworld.<\/p>\n

Man: That\u2019s right, Dolores.\u00a0 You\u2019re in a dream.\u00a0 Would you like to wake up from this dream?<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m terrified.<\/em><\/p>\n

Man: There\u2019s nothing to be afraid of, Dolores, as long as you answer my questions correctly.\u00a0 Understand?<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: Yes.[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This inquisition determines whether Dolores is allowed to serve above ground in the park or is confined to cold storage on sub-level 83, or not so cold storage as it turns out.\u00a0 (The air conditioning is broken and no one is complaining.)<\/p>\n

<\/a>Man: Good.\u00a0 First, have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dolores sleeps in her bed as her inquisition continues as a voiceover.<\/p>\n

Dolores: No<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dolores awakens.<\/p>\n

Man: Tell us what you think of your world.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: Some people choose to see the ugliness in this world-<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dolores, dressed, descends the stairs.<\/p>\n

Dolores: -the disarray.\u00a0 I choose to see the beauty.\u00a0 To believe there is an order to our days: a purpose.<\/em><\/p>\n

Man: What do you think of the guests?<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: You mean the newcomers?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

An unnamed guest arriving at the park on the train talks to his unnamed companion.<\/p>\n

Guest: First time I played it white hat.\u00a0 My family was here.\u00a0 We went fishing, did the gold hunt in the mountains.<\/em><\/p>\n

Companion: And last time?<\/em><\/p>\n

Guest: I came alone, went straight evil.\u00a0 It was the best two weeks of my life.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: I like to remember what my father taught me: that at one point or another, we were all new to this world.\u00a0 The newcomers are just looking for the same thing we are, a place to be free, to stake out dreams, a place with unlimited possibilities.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thus begins a three season reverie on human sin and freedom of choice by Jonathan Nolan<\/a> and Lisa Joy<\/a>.\u00a0 It prompted my own reverie about my own programming.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to control people,\u201d\u00a0 Dad used to say.\u00a0 Written down it seems like an imperative.\u00a0 Perhaps it had something to do with my early attempts to control my younger brother and sister when Dad came home from work.\u00a0 Perhaps that was just my own evil desire to dominate others and make them play by my rules.\u00a0 It\u2019s all too dim and dark for me to know for sure now.<\/p>\n

By the time I actually recall my own memories of Dad\u2019s saying, I didn\u2019t hear it as a command for me to obey.\u00a0 It was said with such bitterness, resentment or sarcasm I assumed he lamented a freedom to believe, to think, to say and to do whatever he wanted, a freedom of choice denied by a rule that people must be controlled.<\/p>\n

Dolores was controlled even as an adult by the love of her father Peter Abernathy (Louis Herthum<\/a>).\u00a0 He in turn was controlled by her existence as his daughter.\u00a0 He wanted her home before dark.<\/p>\n

Dolores: Oh, I\u2019m not a child anymore.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be just fine.<\/em><\/p>\n

Peter: When I was a law man…<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: Yes, Daddy, I know all about when you were a law man.\u00a0 I know all your stories and so does every boy that ever came courting.<\/em><\/p>\n

Peter: I know how boys think.\u00a0 Was one myself once, given to all manner of drinking and mischief.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: Whatever happened to that fearsome ne\u2019er-do-well?<\/em><\/p>\n

Peter: He vanished the day I became your father.\u00a0 I am what I am because of you, and I wouldn\u2019t have it any other way.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolores: I know Daddy.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be home before dark.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This particular form of control was programmed into human beings from the very beginning (Genesis 2:18-25 NET):<\/p>\n

The Lord God said, \u201cIt is not good for the man to be alone. \u00a0I will make a companion for him who corresponds to him.\u201d\u00a0 The Lord God formed out of the ground every living animal of the field and every bird of the air.\u00a0 He brought them to the man to see what he would name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. \u00a0So the man named all the animals, the birds of the air, and the living creatures of the field, but for Adam no companion who corresponded to him was found.\u00a0 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he was asleep, he took part of the man\u2019s side and closed up the place with flesh. \u00a0Then the Lord God made\u00a0a woman from the part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. \u00a0Then the man said, \u201cThis one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called \u2018woman,\u2019 for she was taken out of man.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is why\u00a0a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become one family [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Together under most normal circumstances the man and his wife<\/em> will produce a family to love and care for, and in a very real sense to be controlled by.\u00a0 But why is such control necessary?\u00a0 It seems to me that the freedom to believe, to think, to say and to do whatever I want is only workable as a way life if I\u2019m alone on a tropical island. \u00a0Even there it could become a way of death.<\/p>\n

Alone on a tropical island I would lie naked on the beach.\u00a0 If I do nothing but lie naked on the beach I will die.\u00a0 Fortunately, I was programmed by someone wiser than I am.\u00a0 Eventually, the pain of sunburn or a sensation of thirst will drive me inland seeking shelter and fresh water.\u00a0 In time I\u2019ll have a sensation of hunger and search for food.\u00a0 If my searches are successful, my time will be divided between lying naked on the beach and those searches for shelter from the sun, water to drink and food to eat.\u00a0 Who, knows, I might even spend some time washing the sweat and grime off my naked body.<\/p>\n

So, is it my choice to search for shelter, water and food? \u00a0Or am I enslaved to the cravings of my body?\u00a0 Or, what becomes even more apparent in the context of three seasons of Westworld, am I enslaved to the Programmer who created me (Genesis 1:27 NET)?<\/p>\n

God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How I\u2019ll react is determined in large part by how I feel about my Creator.\u00a0 Am I grateful for his wisdom, punctuating my sunbathing with searches for shelter, water and food?\u00a0 Or am I angry and resentful about it?<\/p>\n

Theoretically, if I have the willpower, I remain free to lie stubbornly on the beach until I die.\u00a0 If I do not lie naked on the beach until I die yet remain angry and resentful, it probably means I want to live in an imaginary world, a world where I never have any pain from sunburn and where slaves bring me water and food on demand.\u00a0 You know, like \u201cheaven,\u201d or Westworld where Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy explore what life is like for slaves whose creator is less than love (1 John 4:7, 8 NET):<\/p>\n

Dear friends, let us love one another, because love (1 Corinthians 13<\/a>)<\/em> is from God, and everyone who loves\u00a0has been fathered by God and knows God. \u00a0The person who does not love does not know God because God is love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By day Dolores paints near the river that marks the boundary of the family-friendly area of the park.\u00a0 Her \u201cpurpose,\u201d like the catcher in the rye<\/a>, is to warn children who might stray too close to that boundary.\u00a0 At night she has a very different \u201cpurpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a day of coy flirtation with what seems like a returning guest, Theodore (Teddy) Flood (James Marsden<\/a>), a more gentlemanly man than some, the sweet Dolores\u2019 returns home to find her mother and father murdered.\u00a0 Teddy kills the androids that killed them.\u00a0 A mysterious Man in Black (Ed Harris<\/a>) shows up to rape and possibly murder Dolores.\u00a0 When Teddy intervenes, we learn that he, too, is an android, programmed to lose to the Man in Black or any other guest who happens along.<\/p>\n

Dolores\u2019 and Teddy\u2018s creator, Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins<\/a>), is not love but merely a man as innately evil as any guest at the park.\u00a0 In a maintenance session Ford (the god of this brave new world<\/a>) confirmed to Teddy:[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Your job is not to protect Dolores, it\u2019s to keep her here.\u00a0 To ensure that the guests find her if they want to best the stalwart gunslinger and have their way with his girl.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then this truth was erased from Teddy\u2019s memory before he was put back in service in this man-made \u201cheaven\u201d called Westworld, that the rape of Dolores would be all the more appealing to sinful men night after night after night.\u00a0 Love acted differently toward those He created (1 John 4:9, 10 NET):<\/p>\n

By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him. \u00a0In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice\u00a0for our sins.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus, God\u2019s one and only Son<\/em>, believed the evil one comes and snatches <\/em>truth from someone\u2019s memory (Matthew 13:19 NET):<\/p>\n

When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches what was sown in his heart…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A more realistic vision of a true heaven (a more sustainable heaven, at least) is a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, every moment of every day (and night) forever.\u00a0 That should frighten even the least self-aware.\u00a0 Paul wrote (2 Corinthians 5:14, 15 NET):<\/p>\n

For the love of Christ controls us, since we have concluded this, that<\/a> Christ died for all; therefore all have died [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019m going to cut to the chase here.\u00a0 The righteousness given<\/a> to those who trust Jesus is the fruit<\/a> of his Holy Spirit: God\u2019s own love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control springing up<\/em> within us to eternal life<\/em><\/a> from his own Spirit dwelling in us.\u00a0 The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to learn to be led by his Spirit, his love, his joy, his peace, his patience, his kindness, his goodness, his faithfulness, his gentleness and his self-control, rather than having some righteousness of your own derived<\/a> from some law, his or anyone else\u2019s, including your own.<\/p>\n

So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away\u2014look, what is new has come<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>! \u00a0And all these things are from God who reconciled us to himself through Christ<\/a> and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0In other words, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people\u2019s trespasses against them, and he has given us the message of reconciliation. \u00a0Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making his plea through us.\u00a0 We plead with you on Christ\u2019s behalf, \u201cBe reconciled to God!\u201d \u00a0God<\/a> made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become<\/a> the righteousness of God [Table<\/a>].[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul wrote to people in Philippi who believed Jesus (Philippians 2:12-16a NET):<\/p>\n
