Part 35"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the crescendo of faith and victory in Christ at the end of chapter eight, Paul\u2019s abrupt admission at the beginning of chapter nine is disconcerting.\u00a0 <em>I am telling the truth in Christ (I am not lying!), for my conscience assures me in the Holy Spirit \u2013 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><br \/>\nBut the sense of his <em>great sorrow and unceasing anguish<\/em> comes with its cause.\u00a0 <em>For <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_ftn12\">I could wish<\/a> that I myself were accursed \u2013 cut off from Christ \u2013 for the sake of my people, my fellow countrymen <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<em>, who are Israelites<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><br \/>\nThis has become more personal to me as I reflect on the fundamentalist Christians who are <em>my people<\/em> by birth.<\/p>\n<p><em>To them<\/em>, Paul continued writing about the descendants of Israel, <em>belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises. \u00a0To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, by human descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever! \u00a0Amen.<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While this is objectively true of Israel I grew up feeling it subjectively, that fundamentalist Christians were the true heirs of it all.\u00a0 <em>It is not as though the word of God had failed<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 What does it mean for <em>the righteousness of God through the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/11\/romans-part-16\/\">faithfulness of Jesus Christ<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> who believe<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> when the people for whom it was prepared rejected the Gospel of Christ?<\/p>\n<p>This sounds, even to my ear, like a harsh judgment of the fundamentalist Christians I call <em>my people<\/em>.\u00a0 But I am taking the absence of internet chatter regarding the movie \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.courageousthemovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Courageous<\/a>\u201d as anecdotal evidence.\u00a0 I only found one comment from a Lutheran theologian criticizing \u201cCourageous\u201d for being too synergistic (not monergistic enough).\u00a0 I had to look it up, too, so I won\u2019t choose up sides and argue theological jargon.\u00a0 It makes me feel a little too much like a Gentile living <em>in the futility of<\/em> [my] <em>thinking<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I will simply say that the character Adam in the movie sought to have his own righteousness derived from his own reading of the Bible as a list of rules he resolved (or, swore an oath) to keep.\u00a0 Then he became a stumblingblock to others as they followed him in his defection from Christ\u2019s righteousness.\u00a0 This is clearly part of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Philippians+3:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dung<\/a><\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> Paul had rejected of his past life as a Pharisee.\u00a0 And the silence on the internet is deafening when compared to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epm.org\/resources\/2006\/Feb\/01\/perspectives-end-spear-and-chad-allen-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outrage<\/a> over the movie \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/End_of_the_Spear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">End of the Spear<\/a>,\u201d when a gay Christian was hired to portray a missionary and his son.<\/p>\n<p>As I have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/06\/romans-part-31\/\">written before<\/a> I didn\u2019t see this either as I watched the movie.\u00a0 We fundamentalist Christians are so accustomed to being <em>tossed back and forth by waves<\/em> of the latest spiritual fad, <em>and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> and so dissatisfied with the lives we lead by <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/\"><em>faith alone<\/em><\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> that Adam\u2019s neo-Phariseeism seems completely right and natural to us.\u00a0 We are they who <em>maintain the outward appearance of religion but<\/em>\u2026<em>have repudiated its power<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> the <em>power he exercised in Christ when he raised him from the<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><em> dead<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> the righteousness that comes from his Spirit, his <em>love<\/em>, his <em>joy<\/em>, his <em>peace<\/em>, his <em>patience<\/em>, his <em>kindness<\/em>, his <em>goodness<\/em>, his <em>faithfulness<\/em>, his <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn4\">gentleness<\/a><\/em>, and his <em>self-control <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> Paul began to explain how the word of God had not failed, <em>nor are all the children Abraham\u2019s true descendants; rather<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>through Isaac will your descendants be counted<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This seemed like an ad hoc argument to me, since all the descendants of Israel (Jacob) were also descendents of Isaac his father.\u00a0 But then Paul reiterated the point he had made over and over in Romans, <em>This means it is not the children of the flesh<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarkos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>) <em>who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>are counted<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>as descendants<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is the same distinction Paul made between those born only of the flesh and those <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/\">born of the flesh and of the Spirit<\/a>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> and those who <em>live<\/em> according to the flesh and those who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/18\/romans-part-28\/\"><em>live<\/em> according the Spirit<\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>And look, I am sending you what my Father promised<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), the resurrected Jesus told the <em>children of promise<\/em> (all descended from Israel) just before He <em>was taken up into heaven<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>While <\/em>[Jesus]<em> was with them<\/em>, Luke reiterated in Acts, <em>he declared, \u201cDo not leave Jerusalem, but wait there for what my Father promised <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>),<em> which you heard about from me. \u00a0For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it<\/em>, Peter declared in his first sermon on Pentecost. \u00a0<em>So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the Holy <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#sdfootnote19sym\">Spirit<\/a> from the Father, he has poured out what you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#sdfootnote20sym\">both<\/a> see and hear<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#_Table7\">[Table]<\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>For this is what the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/\">promise<\/a> <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>declared:<\/em> Paul continued. \u00a0\u201c<strong><em>About a year from now I will return and Sarah will have a son<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Not only that, but when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our ancestor Isaac \u2013 even before they were born or had done anything good or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/08\/29\/who-am-i-part-14\/#sdfootnote11sym\">bad<\/a> (so that God\u2019s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling) \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/08\/29\/who-am-i-part-14\/#sdfootnote12sym\">it was said<\/a> to her, <\/em>\u201c<strong><em>The older will serve the younger<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d [see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/08\/29\/who-am-i-part-14\/#_Tablec\">Table<\/a> for comparison] <em>just as it is written:<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>Jacob I loved<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>but Esau I hated<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This kind of talk rubs those born only of the flesh of Adam, those who are content with their own works, the wrong way.\u00a0 Paul knew that.<\/p>\n<p><em>What shall we say then?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 <em>Is there injustice with God?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, by what right did God distinguish between Esau and Jacob <em>before they were born or had done anything good or bad<\/em>?<em> \u00a0<\/em>Too often, I have missed the point here, rationalizing that God knew what Esau and Jacob would do before they were born.\u00a0 But Paul said, <em>Absolutely not!\u00a0 For he says to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote12sym\">Moses<\/a>:<\/em> <strong><em>\u201cI will have mercy on whom I have mercy<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion\u201d<\/strong><\/em> [see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/#_Tablea\">Table<\/a> for comparison].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Even as He gave Moses the law that defined sin, God reserved for Himself the right to have mercy and compassion on any He chose to have mercy and compassion. \u00a0<em>So then,<\/em> Paul concluded, <em>it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote13sym\">mercy<\/a><\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>For the scripture says to Pharaoh:<\/em> Paul continued to make his point doubly strong and doubly clear by declaring its inverse. \u00a0\u201c<strong><em>For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth<\/strong><\/em>\u201d [see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_Tablea\">Table<\/a> for comparison]. \u00a0<em>So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Again, such talk infuriates one depending on his own works for glory, honor and salvation.\u00a0 <em>You will say to me then, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn10\">Why<\/a> does he still find fault?\u00a0 For who has ever resisted his will?\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Paul didn\u2019t back down (Romans 9:20-29 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But who indeed are you \u2013 a mere human being \u2013 to talk back to God? \u00a0<strong><em>Does what is molded say to the molder<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>\u201c<strong><em>Why have you made me like this?<\/em><\/strong>\u201d <em>[see <a
