After the crescendo of faith and victory in Christ at the end of chapter eight, Paul\u2019s abrupt admission at the beginning of chapter nine is disconcerting.\u00a0 I am telling the truth in Christ (I am not lying!), for my conscience assures me in the Holy Spirit \u2013 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>
\nBut the sense of his great sorrow and unceasing anguish<\/em> comes with its cause.\u00a0 For I could wish<\/a> that I myself were accursed \u2013 cut off from Christ \u2013 for the sake of my people, my fellow countrymen <\/em>[Table<\/a>], who are Israelites<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a>
\nThis has become more personal to me as I reflect on the fundamentalist Christians who are my people<\/em> by birth.<\/p>\n

To them<\/em>, Paul continued writing about the descendants of Israel, belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises. \u00a0To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, by human descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever! \u00a0Amen.<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While this is objectively true of Israel I grew up feeling it subjectively, that fundamentalist Christians were the true heirs of it all.\u00a0 It is not as though the word of God had failed<\/em>,4<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 What does it mean for the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ<\/a> for all<\/a> who believe<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a> when the people for whom it was prepared rejected the Gospel of Christ?<\/p>\n

This sounds, even to my ear, like a harsh judgment of the fundamentalist Christians I call my people<\/em>.\u00a0 But I am taking the absence of internet chatter regarding the movie \u201cCourageous<\/a>\u201d as anecdotal evidence.\u00a0 I only found one comment from a Lutheran theologian criticizing \u201cCourageous\u201d for being too synergistic (not monergistic enough).\u00a0 I had to look it up, too, so I won\u2019t choose up sides and argue theological jargon.\u00a0 It makes me feel a little too much like a Gentile living in the futility of<\/em> [my] thinking<\/em>.6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I will simply say that the character Adam in the movie sought to have his own righteousness derived from his own reading of the Bible as a list of rules he resolved (or, swore an oath) to keep.\u00a0 Then he became a stumblingblock to others as they followed him in his defection from Christ\u2019s righteousness.\u00a0 This is clearly part of the dung<\/a><\/em>7<\/sup><\/a> Paul had rejected of his past life as a Pharisee.\u00a0 And the silence on the internet is deafening when compared to the outrage<\/a> over the movie \u201cEnd of the Spear<\/a>,\u201d when a gay Christian was hired to portray a missionary and his son.<\/p>\n

As I have written before<\/a> I didn\u2019t see this either as I watched the movie.\u00a0 We fundamentalist Christians are so accustomed to being tossed back and forth by waves<\/em> of the latest spiritual fad, and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes<\/em>,8<\/sup><\/a> and so dissatisfied with the lives we lead by faith alone<\/em><\/a>9<\/sup><\/a> that Adam\u2019s neo-Phariseeism seems completely right and natural to us.\u00a0 We are they who maintain the outward appearance of religion but<\/em>\u2026have repudiated its power<\/em>,10<\/sup><\/a> the power he exercised in Christ when he raised him from the<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a> dead<\/em>,12<\/sup><\/a> the righteousness that comes from his Spirit, his love<\/em>, his joy<\/em>, his peace<\/em>, his patience<\/em>, his kindness<\/em>, his goodness<\/em>, his faithfulness<\/em>, his gentleness<\/a><\/em>, and his self-control <\/em>[Table<\/a>].13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel<\/em>,14<\/sup><\/a> Paul began to explain how the word of God had not failed, nor are all the children Abraham\u2019s true descendants; rather<\/em> \u201cthrough Isaac will your descendants be counted<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This seemed like an ad hoc argument to me, since all the descendants of Israel (Jacob) were also descendents of Isaac his father.\u00a0 But then Paul reiterated the point he had made over and over in Romans, This means it is not the children of the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>) who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) are counted<\/em> (\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) as descendants<\/em>.16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is the same distinction Paul made between those born only of the flesh and those born of the flesh and of the Spirit<\/a>,17<\/sup><\/a> and those who live<\/em> according to the flesh and those who live<\/em> according the Spirit<\/a>.18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

And look, I am sending you what my Father promised<\/em>19<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), the resurrected Jesus told the children of promise<\/em> (all descended from Israel) just before He was taken up into heaven<\/em>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While <\/em>[Jesus] was with them<\/em>, Luke reiterated in Acts, he declared, \u201cDo not leave Jerusalem, but wait there for what my Father promised <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), which you heard about from me. \u00a0For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.\u201d<\/em>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it<\/em>, Peter declared in his first sermon on Pentecost. \u00a0So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of the Holy Spirit<\/a> from the Father, he has poured out what you both<\/a> see and hear<\/em> [Table]<\/a>.22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For this is what the promise<\/a> <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) declared:<\/em> Paul continued. \u00a0\u201cAbout a year from now I will return and Sarah will have a son<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d23<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Not only that, but when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our ancestor Isaac \u2013 even before they were born or had done anything good or bad<\/a> (so that God\u2019s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling) \u2013 it was said<\/a> to her, <\/em>\u201cThe older will serve the younger<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d [see Table<\/a> for comparison] just as it is written:<\/em> \u201cJacob I loved<\/em><\/strong>, but Esau I hated<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This kind of talk rubs those born only of the flesh of Adam, those who are content with their own works, the wrong way.\u00a0 Paul knew that.<\/p>\n

What shall we say then?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 Is there injustice with God?<\/em>25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, by what right did God distinguish between Esau and Jacob before they were born or had done anything good or bad<\/em>? \u00a0<\/em>Too often, I have missed the point here, rationalizing that God knew what Esau and Jacob would do before they were born.\u00a0 But Paul said, Absolutely not!\u00a0 For he says to Moses<\/a>:<\/em> \u201cI will have mercy on whom I have mercy<\/em><\/strong>, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion\u201d<\/strong><\/em> [see Table<\/a> for comparison].26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Even as He gave Moses the law that defined sin, God reserved for Himself the right to have mercy and compassion on any He chose to have mercy and compassion. \u00a0So then,<\/em> Paul concluded, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/a><\/em>.27<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For the scripture says to Pharaoh:<\/em> Paul continued to make his point doubly strong and doubly clear by declaring its inverse. \u00a0\u201cFor this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you<\/em><\/strong>, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth<\/strong><\/em>\u201d [see Table<\/a> for comparison]. \u00a0So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden<\/em>.28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Again, such talk infuriates one depending on his own works for glory, honor and salvation.\u00a0 You will say to me then, \u201cWhy<\/a> does he still find fault?\u00a0 For who has ever resisted his will?\u201d<\/em>29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Paul didn\u2019t back down (Romans 9:20-29 NET).<\/p>\n

But who indeed are you \u2013 a mere human being \u2013 to talk back to God? \u00a0Does what is molded say to the molder<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>\u201cWhy have you made me like this?<\/em><\/strong>\u201d [see Table<\/a> for comparison]<\/em>\u00a0Has the potter no right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special use and another for ordinary use? \u00a0But what if God, willing to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath prepared for destruction? \u00a0And what if he is willing to make known the wealth of his glory on the objects of mercy that he has prepared beforehand for glory \u2013 even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? \u00a0As he also says in Hosea: \u201cI will call those who were not my people<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>\u2018My people<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em>\u2019 and I will call her who was unloved, <\/em><\/strong>\u2018My beloved<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em>\u2019\u201d [see Table<\/a> for comparison]<\/em> \u00a0\u201cAnd in the very place<\/em><\/strong> where it was said to them<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>\u2018You are not my people<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em>\u2019 there they will be called <\/em><\/strong>\u2018sons of the living God<\/em><\/strong>\u2019\u201d [see Table<\/a> for comparison]<\/em>.\u00a0 And Isaiah cries out on behalf of Israel, \u201cThough the number of the children<\/em> of Israel are as the sand of the sea<\/em>, only the remnant30<\/sup><\/a> will be saved<\/em>, for the Lord will execute his sentence on the earth completely and quickly<\/em>\u201d31<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Just as Isaiah predicted, \u201cIf the Lord of armies<\/em><\/strong> had not left us descendants<\/strong>, we would have become like Sodom<\/strong>, and we would have resembled Gomorrah.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Now if one reads the passage above, and suspects that he or she has been hardened by God into an object of wrath, and begins to fear rather than to mock, take heart.\u00a0 You have begun to hear the word of the Lord.\u00a0 He is calling you.\u00a0 And the righteous prayer<\/a> that justifies is near you, on your lips. \u00a0God, be merciful <\/em>(\u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a passive<\/a> imperative<\/a> form of \u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) to me, sinner that I am!<\/em>32<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
