This is a continuation of my intent to become much more familiar with the Greek translation of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a8\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>) and \u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u05d4\u0599<\/a> (y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 There were no occurrences of either in Genesis 1:1-19.<\/p>\n

I did find forms of \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>) translated with forms of \u03b8\u03b5\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, both translated God <\/em>(G-d<\/em>) in English.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I also discovered \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (r\u00fba\u1e25<\/em>) \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>), translated \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u03cc\u03c2) in the Septuagint and the spirit of G-d<\/em> (Tanakh), the Spirit of God<\/em> (NET, English Elpenor) or a divine wind<\/em> (NETS) in English.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I began this thread thinking I lacked the language to describe the relationship of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a8\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>), \u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u05d4\u0599<\/a> (y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>) and \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (r\u00fba\u1e25<\/em>) \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>) to \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>).\u00a0 But Paul described the relationship of \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (r\u00fba\u1e25<\/em>) \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>) to \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>) with the following analogy (1 Corinthians 2:9-11 NET):<\/p>\n

But just as it is written, \u201cThings that no eye has seen, or ear heard, or mind imagined, are the things God (\u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> has prepared for those who love him.\u201d \u00a0God (\u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2)<\/em> has revealed these to us by the[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Spirit<\/a> (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0For the Spirit (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> searches[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> all things, even the deep things of God (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2)<\/em>. \u00a0For who among men knows the things of a man except the man\u2019s spirit (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> within him? \u00a0So too, no one knows[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the things of God (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6, a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2)<\/em> except the Spirit (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> of God (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6, a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The English translation of the Tanakh on Chabad.org<\/a> reads: And whereof no one had ever heard, had ever perceived by ear, no eye had ever seen a god besides You perform for him who hoped for him<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While the equation of those who wait for him<\/em> (NET), those who wait for mercy<\/em> (NETS) or who hoped for him <\/em>(Chabad.org) with those who love him<\/em> (NET) is intriguing, I\u2019ll content myself here with the equation of \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd\u0599<\/a> (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>), \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u0398\u03b5\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>) and \u1f41<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2.\u00a0 Paul also commented on the relationship of the Holy Spirit to believers (Romans 8:26, 27 NET).<\/p>\n

This is another example<\/a> of the truth of God\u2019s word: He does what He says and makes it so.\u00a0 <\/a>And here again \u05d8\u05bd\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4\u1e07<\/em>), translated \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f71<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint and good <\/em>in English, serves in my opinion as an innate and self-imposed limit on God\u2019s absolute power and authority<\/a>.\u00a0 It is worth a moment to consider the definitions of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2 in the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a>: \u201cbeautiful (in appearance), fair; good and pleasing in appearance, beautiful; good, useful; conducive to pleasure and enjoyment; advantageous, beneficial, desirable; free from defects, fine, precious; morally good, honest, noble, praiseworthy, contributing to salvation; blameless, excellent, unobjectionable; free from defects, fine, precious; pleasant, desirable, advantageous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
