I suppose anyone can live this way, many do.\u00a0 But in the real world we have a guidebook called the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16, 17 NET).<\/p>\n

Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof<\/a>, for correction, and for training in righteousness [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This guidebook offers a path to eternal life: Now this is eternal life<\/em>, Jesus prayed, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I recommend Jesus\u2019 understanding of eternal life <\/em>over anything else one might imagine.\u00a0 It focuses one\u2019s attention on knowing the only true God, and Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/em>But don\u2019t worry, there are still many choices to make, much fun to be had knowing the mind of our Creator:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Man in Black (Ed Harris<\/a>), a guest at Westworld,\u00a0contrasted it to the real world in conversation with an android host named Lawrence (Clifton Collins Jr.<\/a>):[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I love about this place. \u00a0All the secrets, all the little things I never noticed, even after all these years. \u00a0You know why this beats the real world, Lawrence? \u00a0Real world\u2019s just chaos. \u00a0It\u2019s an accident. \u00a0But in here, every detail adds up to something.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins<\/a>) programmed Westworld with all these details in mind:[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The guests don\u2019t return for the obvious things we do, the garish things.\u00a0 They come back because of the subtleties, the details.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ford, an evolutionist, shares the Man in Black\u2019s worldview to a certain extent, as he explained to his assistant Bernard (Jeffrey Wright<\/a>):[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Ford: \u201cMistakes\u201d is the word you\u2019re too embarrassed to use. \u00a0You ought not to be. \u00a0You\u2019re a product of a trillion of them. \u00a0Evolution forged the entirety of sentient life on this planet using only one tool: The Mistake.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bernard: I flattered myself we were taking a more disciplined approach here. \u00a0I suppose self-delusion is a gift of natural selection as well.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ford: Indeed it is. \u00a0But, of course, we\u2019ve managed to slip evolution\u2019s leash now, haven\u2019t we? \u00a0We can cure any disease, keep even the weak of us alive, and… You know, one fine day, perhaps, we shall even resurrect the dead. \u00a0Call forth Lazarus from his cave. \u00a0Do you know what that means? \u00a0It means that we\u2019re done. \u00a0That this is as good as we\u2019re going to get.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ford thinks of the real world as an endless series of mistakes.\u00a0 The Man in Black thinks it is meaningless chaos, an accident.\u00a0 Both deprive themselves of the knowledge of God revealed in the Bible.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll paraphrase the beginning of the Bible with knowledge that can be perceived throughout by anyone who pays attention, but isn\u2019t stated explicitly[6]<\/sup><\/a> until nearer the end (Genesis 1:1-2:3 ESV).<\/p>\n

In the beginning, Love <\/em>created the heavens and the earth [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.\u00a0 And the Spirit of Love <\/em>was hovering over the face of the waters [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 And Love <\/em>said<\/a>, \u201cLet there be light,\u201d and there was light [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And Love <\/em>saw that the light was good<\/a>.\u00a0 And Love <\/em>separated the light from the darkness [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Love <\/em>called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.\u00a0 And there was evening and there was morning, the first day [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Though Bernard spoke of self-delusion as a gift of natural selection, it was just a manner of speaking.\u00a0 \u00a0Natural selection has neither the power nor authority, neither mind nor inclination to bestow gifts on anyone.\u00a0 It is simply a euphemism for death<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The game is played something like this:<\/p>\n

If self-delusion can be shown to help evolutionists overcome their anxiety\u2014living in a cold, uncaring universe\u2014enough to relax, have sex and reproduce more offspring than those who believe in God\u2019s love, care and provision for them, evolutionists may become the dominant species.\u00a0 Then self-delusion could be considered an evolutionary advantage \u201cchosen\u201d by natural selection.\u00a0 If not, evolutionists may die off eventually as other more beneficial beliefs prove more conducive to differential reproduction<\/a>.[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
