Item #2 began \u1f25\u03be\u03c9<\/a> (I will come<\/em>) \u03c0\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u1f72<\/a> (to you<\/em>) in the Septuagint followed by the prepositional phrase \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 In Revelation 3:3 (NET) \u1f25\u03be\u03c9<\/a> was translated I will come<\/em> both times it occurred: \u00a0If you do not wake up, I will come<\/em> (\u1f25\u03be\u03c9<\/a>) like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f25\u03be\u03c9<\/a>) against you<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul left off \u03c0\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u1f72<\/a> (to you<\/em>) and (after the prepositional phrase \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) chose \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, which was also translated I will come<\/em> in Romans 15:29<\/a> and 1 Corinthians 4:19 (NET)<\/a>.\u00a0 Paul also left off \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f65\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (next year<\/em> or in due time<\/em>).\u00a0 The differences in the final phrases are detailed in Note #5 below.\u00a0 The repetition of that phrase in Genesis 18:14 was identical to Paul\u2019s construction.\u00a0 I consider this a paraphrase more than a quotation.<\/p>\n

Item #3 is identical in the Septuagint and the New Testament.\u00a0 While it is certainly not wrong to translate \u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> older<\/em> and \u1f10\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03b9<\/a> younger<\/em> in this context, it hides\u00a0a nuance that they might have been translated greater<\/em> and lesser<\/em> respectively.\u00a0 Who is the greatest<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) in the kingdom of heaven?<\/em>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He<\/a> called a child, had him stand among them <\/em>[Table<\/a>], and said, \u201cI tell you the truth, unless you turn around and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven! \u00a0Whoever then humbles<\/a> himself like this little child is the greatest<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) in the kingdom of heaven<\/em> [Table<\/a>].9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In Item #6 the second clause \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f45\u03c0\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1fc7<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f44\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03ac<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> \u03b3\u1fc7<\/a> (and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth<\/em>) is identical in both the Septuagint and the New Testament except that the accent mark is missing from \u03b1 at the end of \u1f44\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> (name<\/em>) in the parallel Greek text.\u00a0 According to Bill Braun16<\/sup><\/a> \u201cThe main difference in this citation is the use of a different verb in this first clause.\u00a0 The NT uses the Greek verb \u1f10\u03be\u03ae\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac<\/a> (\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03b3\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>– 1s-AAI- Mng.- to raise up; bring into being; elevate (BDAG, 346); Trans.- elevated).\u00a0 The LXX uses the verb \u03b4\u03b9\u03b5\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> -2s-API- Mng.- to preserve (GELS); Trans.- you have been preserved).\u00a0 Certainly these verbs are different\u2026.In this case the LXX does follow the sense of the MT better since the Hebrew verb \u05d4\u05b6\u05e2\u05b1\u05de\u05b7\u05d3\u05b0\u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05da\u05b8<\/a> (\u05e2\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05d3 -H-14; x2ms; Mng.- to cause to stand firm; maintain (BDB, 764); Trans.- caused to stand firm (or remain)) is very close in meaning.\u201d17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

As I contemplated why he deliberately changed the word, it came to me that Paul wasn\u2019t grappling with the relatively minor issue of why God kept<\/em> or preserved<\/em> a harsh ruler over his people longer than they thought He should.\u00a0 Paul was entertaining the alarming possibility that his contemporaries, men he studied the Torah with, his brothers, fellow Israelites, might have been raised up<\/em> or brought into being<\/em> by God only to be condemned for eternity.\u00a0 His anguish is palpable:\u00a0 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart<\/em>. \u00a0For I could wish<\/a> that I myself were accursed \u2013 cut off from Christ \u2013 for the sake of my people, my fellow countrymen <\/em>[Table<\/a>], who are Israelites<\/em>.18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The minor differences are as follows:\u00a0 Paul began with the phrase \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (for this very purpose<\/em>).\u00a0 The Septuagint began \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f15\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u03cd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (NETS<\/a>: and for this reason<\/em>).\u00a0 Paul used a different conjunction \u1f45\u03c0\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> (in such manner as) than \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> (in that place) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 Paul chose \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03bd<\/a> over \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03bd<\/a> (strength).\u00a0 There are enough differences in the first clause that I find it difficult to think of as a quotation.\u00a0 It is more like an amplification of Paul\u2019s point:\u00a0 So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden<\/em>.19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

It stands as an allusion to, So the Lord said to Moses, \u201cSee, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet<\/em>. \u00a0You are to speak everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh that he must release the Israelites from his land<\/em>. \u00a0But I will harden Pharaoh\u2019s heart, and although I will multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt, Pharaoh will not listen to you.\u201d<\/em>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0This mirrored Paul’s experience too often to\u00a0pass without comment.<\/p>\n
