{"id":17983,"date":"2021-10-01T14:03:30","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T19:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=17983"},"modified":"2024-10-08T10:00:42","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T15:00:42","slug":"the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=17983","title":{"rendered":"The Lost Son of Perdition, Part 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a continuation of my consideration of God\u2019s love for Satan revealed in the book of Job.\u00a0 I left off at Job 1:8 (NETS) <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And the Lord said to him, \u201cDid you give thought to your disposition against my servant Iob\u2014because there is no one of those on the earth like him, a man who is blameless, genuine, religious, staying away from every evil thing?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I quoted the NETS here not because I think Claude E. Cox the English translator might agree with me.\u00a0 On the contrary the abstract of his paper\u2014\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sblcentral.org\/home\/conferencePaperDetails\/34840?search=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Translator as Author: The Old Greek Translator of Job<\/a>\u201d\u2014presented at the annual meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbl-site.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Society of Biblical Literature<\/a> in 2015 leads me to believe that he ascribed editorial prerogatives to the Greek translator(s) of Job rather than the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/13\/isaiah-5310-12-part-9\/#_Masoretes\">Masoretes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>This paper attempts to access the mind of the translator of Job by examining those instances the OG has no correspondence in the source text. Since these pieces of text cannot really be called \u201ctranslation,\u201d they belong uniquely to the translator.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Johann Cook in a paper titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.org.za\/pdf\/ote\/v24n2\/02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Profile and some Theological Aspects of the Old Greek of Job \u2013 Resurrection and Life after Death as Points in Case<sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u201d quoted from Mr. Cox\u2019s introduction to his translation of Job:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>According to Cox,<sup>19<\/sup> the OGJOB is a work of good literary quality. The usual Hebraisms that are the tell-tale signs of translation Greek in much of the Septuagint corpus are absent \u2013 this applies to LXX Proverbs too. There can be no doubt that the translators of LXX Proverbs and the OGJOB were both steeped in Greek and Jewish culture.<sup>20<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Another general characteristic of the translation consists of transferring passages from elsewhere in Job or from other parts of the Septuagint into the translation, so-called inter-\/intra-textual rendering.<sup>21<\/sup> This phenomenon was detected by Dhorme<sup>22<\/sup> and Ziegler and studied by Heater, who calls it \u201cthe anaphoric translation technique.\u201d<sup>23<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I quoted Mr. Cox\u2019s translation because he alone recognized the foreknowledge of God in <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prose.html#prosesces\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u1f73\u03c3\u03c7\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dian.html#dianoia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kata.html#kata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> (English Elpenor: <em>Hast thou diligently considered<\/em>) with his rendering: <em>Did you give thought to your disposition against<\/em>\u2026\u00a0 Rather than singling Job out to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_bragging\">brag<\/a> about his righteousness, in Mr. Cox\u2019s translation\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3068\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (<em>Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>) is fully aware that Satan has singled out Job and set his own heart and mind against him.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered if the Greek translators of Job heard this foreknowledge in the Hebrew from which the Greek was translated: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7760\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05e9\u05c1\u05de\u05ea<\/a> (<em>\u015b\u00fbm<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3820\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05d1\u05da<\/a> (<em>l\u0113\u1e07<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5921\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e2\u05dc<\/a> (<em>\u02bfal<\/em>).\u00a0 In this particular instance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/rabbi-shlomo-yitzchaki-rashi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rashi\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/bible_cdo\/aid\/16403\/showrashi\/true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commentary<\/a> seems to confirm what the Greek translators heard in the Hebrew and what Mr. Cox heard in turn in the Greek: \u201c<strong>Have you paid attention to My servant Job:<\/strong> that you should desire to denounce him?\u201d\u00a0 If I had studied Mr. Cox\u2019s translation of Job many years earlier might I have come to a different conclusion about God\u2019s love and my hunger and thirst for righteousness, and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_wife\">served<\/a> my wife and family better?<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t go back.\u00a0 I rel=\"noopener\">\u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>), Does Job worship the Lord (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#ton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ku.html#kurion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) for nothing?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a id=\"_nothing\"><\/a>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Timothy+2:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eve<\/a> I\u2019m very susceptible to Satan\u2019s reasoning.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to take away from this that I should <em>fear <\/em>(<em>y\u0101r\u0113&#8217;<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3372\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05a5\u05d0<\/a>) <em>God for nought<\/em> (<em>\u1e25inn\u0101m<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h2600\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05a3\u05d7\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b8\u0594\u05dd<\/a>), that true righteousness would be to <em>worship <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/se.html#sebetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1f73\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/se.html#sebw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the Lord for nothing<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mh.html#mh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dw.html#dwrean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>).\u00a0 The Greek word \u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd in particular might deceive me.<\/p>\n<p><em>As you go<\/em>, Jesus instructed his disciples, <em>preach this message: \u2018The kingdom of heaven is near!\u2019 \u00a0Heal the sick, raise the dead,<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><em> cleanse lepers, cast out demons.\u00a0 Freely<\/em> (\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd) <em>you received, freely<\/em> (\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd) <em>give<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Would it not be better to worship the Lord <em>freely<\/em>?\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 own attitude and the answer to this question are revealed as He continued (Matthew 10:9, 10 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do not take gold, silver, or copper in your belts; no bag for the journey; or an extra tunic, or sandals or staff; for the worker deserves his provisions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus believes <em>the worker deserves his provisions <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ax.html#axios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03be\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ga.html#gar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u1f70\u03c1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> <a rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>).\u00a0 This ought to be a no-brainer.\u00a0 My employer provided everything I needed to do the job he also paid me to do.\u00a0 Imagine being sent out to <em>Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers <\/em>and<em> cast out demons <\/em>without the grace of God to enable one to do so.<\/p>\n<p>That grace, that enabling power to <em>Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers <\/em>and<em> cast out demons <\/em>is what was <em>freely <\/em>(\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd) <em>received <\/em>by Jesus\u2019 disciples.\u00a0 Then and only then did he command them to <em>freely <\/em>(\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd) <em>give <\/em>the benefit of that enabling power to <em>Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers <\/em>and<em> cast out demons <\/em>to others.\u00a0 Jesus never asked them to worship Him <em>freely<\/em>, sending them out to <em>Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers <\/em>and<em> cast out demons <\/em>by their own power, their own authority or their own righteousness.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now without faith it is impossible to please<\/em> [God], <em>for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek words translated <em>he rewards <\/em>were the noun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mi.html#misqapodoths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u1f79\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> followed by the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gi.html#ginetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gi.html#ginomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>): literally \u201che becomes the paymaster of\u201d <em>those who seek him<\/em>.\u00a0 In other words, God is a better employer than the man who \u201cprovided everything I needed to do the job he also paid me to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>And my God will supply your every need<\/em>, Paul wrote believing Philippians, <em>according to his glorious <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/12\/jedidiah-part-6\/#_ftn1\">riches<\/a> in Christ Jesus<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>What then shall we say about these things? <\/em>Paul asked believing Romans rhetorically.\u00a0 <em>If God is for us, who can be against us? \u00a0Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/forgiveness-and-my-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote2sym\">but<\/a> gave him up for us all\u2014how will he not also, along with him, freely give<\/em> <em>us all things<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/forgiveness-and-my-religious-mind\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 (The Greek word translated <em>freely give<\/em> here was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carisetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Satan words to decipher what he thinks or believes. \u00a0Jesus described the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_devil\">devil<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diab.html#diabolou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b2\u1f79\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diab.html#diabolos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f71\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) as one who <em>does <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn10\">not<\/a> uphold the truth because there is no truth in him. \u00a0Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature because he is a liar and the father of lies<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Still, Satan\u2019s words express a thought or belief as a hypothesis: Job does not fear or worship God freely (or, for nothing).\u00a0 Job worships God because God has blessed the works of Job\u2019s hands and protected the fruit of Job\u2019s that Job does not fear or worship God freely (or, for nothing); Job worships God because God has blessed the works of Job\u2019s hands and protected the fruit of Job\u2019s labor.\u00a0 Satan\u2019s proposed test of this hypothesis is, <em>strike everything he has, and he will no doubt curse you <\/em>(or not bless you) <em>to your face<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>God <em>announces the end from the beginning
