The Hebrew word translated be<\/em>\u2026far from me<\/em> (Tanakh\/KJV) and do<\/em>\u2026remain far away<\/em> (NET) was \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u0591\u05e7<\/a> (r\u0101\u1e25aq<\/em>).\u00a0 The first occurrence of this word in Genesis is very interesting in this context (Genesis 21:14-16 NET).<\/p>\n

Early in the morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. \u00a0He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child, and sent her away. \u00a0So she went wandering aimlessly through the wilderness of Beer Sheba. \u00a0When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved the child under one of the shrubs. \u00a0Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance (<\/em>r\u0101\u1e25aq, \u00a0\u05d4\u05e8\u05d7\u05e7<\/a>)[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em>, about a bowshot, away; for she thought, \u201cI refuse to watch the child die.\u201d \u00a0So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus asked \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>) not to be like Hagar who refused to watch her child die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word translated O my strength<\/em> (Tanakh\/KJV) and You are my source of strength<\/em> (NET) was \u05d0\u059c\u05b1\u05d9\u05b8\u05bd\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05ea\u05b4\u0597\u05d9<\/a> (‘\u0115y\u0101l\u00fb\u1e6f<\/em>).\u00a0 In many of the English translations<\/a> of the Masoretic text I checked\u00a0it was treated like an appositive phrase for \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>).\u00a0 In others it was translated as a sentence identifying \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>): You are my strength<\/em> (NIV<\/a>, NLT<\/a>); My strength comes from you<\/em> (CEV<\/a>); You are my source of strength!<\/em> (NET<\/a>) and You are my help<\/em> (NHEB<\/a>, WEB<\/a>).<\/p>\n

In the Douay-Rheims Bible<\/a> \u05d0\u059c\u05b1\u05d9\u05b8\u05bd\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05ea\u05b4\u0597\u05d9<\/a> (‘\u0115y\u0101l\u00fb\u1e6f<\/em>) was translated in the accusative case<\/a> (thy help<\/em>) not unlike the Septuagint: But thou, O Lord, remove not thy help to a distance from me; look towards my defence<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But the rabbis who translated the Septuagint chose \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03b2\u03bf\u1f75\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u1f71\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> rather than \u1f41<\/a> \u03b2\u03bf\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5.\u00a0 So in the English translations my help<\/em> seems to refer to something other than the Lord. \u00a0This could be another reason[3]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus preferred to pray the Hebrew or Aramaic text of this psalm from the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word translated to help me<\/em> (Tanakh\/KJV), and help me<\/em> (NET), was \u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b6\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05a5\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9<\/a> (\u02bfezr\u00e2<\/em>).\u00a0 Here, too, I find the first occurrence very instructive (Judges 5:23 NET).<\/p>\n

Call judgment down on Meroz,\u2019 says the angel of the Lord; \u2018Be sure to call judgment down on those who live there, because they did not come to help (<\/em>ezr\u00e2, \u05dc\u05e2\u05d6\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>)<\/em> in the Lord\u2019s battle, to help (<\/em>ezr\u00e2, \u05dc\u05e2\u05d6\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>)<\/em> in the Lord\u2019s battle against the warriors.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus did not call on \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>) to rescue Him from the cross, but to help Him endure the Lord\u2019s<\/em> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) battle <\/em>of the moment (Tanakh\/KJV: to the help of the LORD against the mighty<\/em>).\u00a0 But this distinction seems to vanish in the very next verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This doesn\u2019t appear to have anything to do with Jesus\u2019 crucifixion.\u00a0 But after nineteen verses that seem expressly written to give Him the words to pray, and after many years of making preventable errors studying in English translation only, I\u2019m willing to put some study time in on this one.\u00a0 The Greek word \u1fe5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u1fe5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>), translated Rescue <\/em>(NETS) and Deliver <\/em>(English Elpenor) in the Septuagint above, occurs twice<\/a>, and only twice in the same context of prayer in the New Testament, just to whet my appetite (Matthew 6:13; Luke 11:4 KJV):<\/p>\n

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver (\u03c1\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.\u00a0 Amen<\/a>. [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n

And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. \u00a0And lead us not into temptation; but deliver (\u03c1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> us from evil.[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Hebrew words translated Deliver my soul<\/em> (Tanakh) and Deliver me <\/em>(NET) in Psalm 22:20 above were \u05d4\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> and \u05e0\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u0591\u05d9<\/a>.\u00a0 I\u2019ll begin this survey considering other verses which contain both a form of \u05e0\u05b8\u05e6\u05b7\u05dc <\/a> (n\u0101\u1e63al<\/em>) and a form of \u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1<\/a> (nep\u0304e\u0161<\/em>).\u00a0 The first is Reuben\u2019s attempted rescue of his little brother Joseph when their other brothers planned to kill him<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I called this Reuben\u2019s \u201cattempted rescue\u201d because his ultimate intention\u2014that he might deliver<\/em> (\u05d4\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b4\u05a4\u05d9\u05dc<\/a>) him out of their hand, to restore him to his father<\/em>\u2014was not accomplished.\u00a0 I suppose I could have called it a \u201cpartial rescue\u201d since Reuben delivered <\/em>(\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b4\u05dc\u05b5\u0596\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>) him out of their hand<\/em> in the sense that his brothers did not follow through in their original intent to kill Joseph.\u00a0 As it turned out Reuben\u2019s ultimate intention ran counter to the intention of God (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I was curious how this was stated in Hebrew and Greek.\u00a0 The Hebrew word \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u05a5\u05b9\u05ea<\/a>, translated to save<\/em>\u2026alive <\/em>(Tanakh) and preserve the lives<\/em> (NET), got a slightly more utilitarian treatment in the Septuagint: \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u1fc7<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9<\/a>) was translated might be sustained<\/em> (NETS) and \u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u1fc7<\/a> (a form of \u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9<\/a>) was translated might be fed<\/em> (English Elpenor).\u00a0 Another form of \u05d7\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (\u1e25\u0101y\u00e2<\/em>) occurred along with a form of \u05e0\u05b8\u05e6\u05b7\u05dc<\/a> (n\u0101\u1e63al<\/em>) in Joshua 2:13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This is essentially how I understood Deliver me from the sword<\/em> in English.\u00a0 This study forces me to realize that \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u05b4\u05ea\u05b6\u059e\u05dd<\/a> does not occur here in the Hebrew, nor \u03b6\u03c9\u03b3\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u03b6\u03c9\u03b3\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), nor \u03b6\u03c9\u03b3\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (another form of \u03b6\u03c9\u03b3\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) in the Greek.\u00a0 The Hebrew and the Greek are slightly different in both verses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
