Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhat is a person but a collection of choices?\u201d the Man in Black (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ed_Harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Harris<\/a>) asks rhetorically.\u00a0 \u201cWhere do those choices come from?\u00a0 Do I have a choice?\u00a0 Were any of these choices ever truly mine to begin with?\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Man in Black had cut himself off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/06\/westworld-part-2\/\">guidebook<\/a> for the real world, the knowledge of God revealed in the Bible.\u00a0 He did not believe <em>all that <\/em>[God] <em>had made<\/em>\u2026<em>was very good<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He did not believe what happened to humankind when the first people rejected God\u2019s word for the serpent\u2019s (Genesis 3:1-7 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now the serpent was shrewder than any of the wild animals that the Lord God had made.\u00a0 He <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_said\">said<\/a> to the woman, \u201cIs it really true that God said, \u2018You must not eat from any tree of the orchard\u2019?\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0The woman said to the serpent, \u201cWe may eat of the fruit from the trees of the orchard; but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard God said, \u2018You must not eat from it, and you must not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/06\/01\/son-of-god-1-john-part-2\/#_touch\">touch it<\/a>, or else you will die.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 The serpent said to the woman, \u201cSurely you will not die <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will open and you will be like God, knowing good and evil\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it.\u00a0 She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.\u00a0 Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+2:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naked<\/a>; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[S]<em>in entered the world through one man<\/em>, Paul explained, <em>and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> <em>You people are from your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn9\">father<\/a> the devil, and you want to do what your father desires<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Granted, it\u2019s all too easy for Gentiles to believe that Jews <em>are from<\/em> [their] <em>father the devil<\/em>.\u00a0 It takes us a little longer to realize that <em>Jews <\/em>are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Everyman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Everyman<\/em><\/a> in the Gospel narratives.<\/p>\n<p>The Man in Black despite cutting himself off from the knowledge of God revealed in the Bible recognized the effect of being <em>from<\/em> his <em>father the devil<\/em>.\u00a0 His wife Juliet (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sela_Ward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sela Ward<\/a>) asked him to tell her one true thing.\u00a0 Thinking she was passed out drunk, he confessed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>No one else sees it: this thing in me.\u00a0 Even I didn\u2019t see it at first.\u00a0 And then one day, it was there: a stain I had never noticed before, tiny fleck of darkness&#8230;invisible to everyone.\u00a0 Yet, I could see nothing else, \u2018til finally I understood that the darkness wasn\u2019t some mark from something I\u2019d done, or some regrettable decision I\u2019d made.\u00a0 I was shedding my skin.\u00a0 The darkness was what was underneath.\u00a0 It was mine all along.\u00a0 And I decided how much of it I let into the world.\u00a0 I tried to do right.\u00a0 I was faithful, generous&#8230;kind, at least in this world.\u00a0 That has to count for something, right?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Man in Black didn\u2019t believe that [w]<em>e are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in<\/em> [God\u2019s] <em>sight<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Man in Black didn\u2019t believe God.\u00a0 And so a confession that may seem like the prelude to receiving God\u2019s salvation through Jesus Christ turns hollow and bitter as he fulfills the rest of Isaiah\u2019s prophecy (Isaiah 64:6b, 7 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We all wither like a leaf; our sins carry us away like the wind. \u00a0No one invokes your name, or makes an effort to take hold of you.\u00a0 For you have rejected us and handed us over to our own sins <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/27\/isaiah-5310-12-part-6\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Man in Black\u2019s confession to his wife continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I built a wall and tried to protect you and Emily.\u00a0 But you saw right through it, didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 You\u2019re the only one.\u00a0 And for that I am truly sorry.\u00a0 Because&#8230;everything you feel is true.\u00a0 I don\u2019t belong to you or this world.\u00a0 I belong to another world.\u00a0 I always have.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He refers here to Westworld.\u00a0\u00a0 What follows is a spoiler for the first season.\u00a0 The \u201cgee whiz\u201d factor of this particular plot twist is far outweighed in my opinion by the benefit of having a temporal landmark to recognize the first season\u2019s double helix story arc: The Man in Black (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ed_Harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Harris<\/a>) is William (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimmi_Simpson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jimmi Simpson<\/a>) older.<\/p>\n<p>He explains to Dolores (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evan_Rachel_Wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evan Rachel Wood<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Black William: Remember, you\u2019re the one who said this is the only world that matters, and you were right.\u00a0 So, I took your advice and I bought this world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dolores: This world doesn\u2019t belong to you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Black William: Oh, but it does by a majority share.\u00a0 And business is booming.\u00a0 And you wanna know why?\u00a0 Because this place feels more real than the real world.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t mean to imply that a fictional character was influenced by the devil.\u00a0 It was the true-to-life crafting of this character (among others) as written and acted that caught my attention in the first place, how well his words and actions displayed the same inner turmoil revealed in the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a god,\u201d Black William (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ed_Harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Harris<\/a>) tells Teddy (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Marsden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Marsden<\/a>), \u201ctitan of industry, philanthropist, family man, married to a beautiful woman, father to a beautiful daughter.\u00a0 I\u2019m the good guy\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Teddy: Did you hurt them, too?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Black William: Never.\u00a0 They never saw anything like the man I am in here.\u00a0 But she knew anyway.\u00a0 She said if I stacked up all my good deeds, it was just an elegant wall I built to hide what\u2019s inside from everyone, and from myself.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>William oversaw the implementation of a program to use the technology of Westworld to create a sinister imitation of eternal life for his dead Father-in-law Jim (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Mullan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Mullan<\/a>), a virtual immortality that leaves the sin nature \u201calive\u201d and fully functioning, cynically called \u201cfidelity.\u201d\u00a0 But the android facsimiles of Jim all went insane eventually.\u00a0 Black William explains to his latest facsimile:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Another year or two, they might crack it, get a version of you that\u2019s viable long-term.\u00a0 But the thing is, we\u2019re not so sure anymore.\u00a0 I\u2019m beginning to think that this whole enterprise was a mistake.\u00a0 People aren\u2019t meant to <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+3:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">live forever<\/a>&#8230;.World is better off without you, Jim.\u00a0 Possibly without me&#8230;.Now, took me a long time to learn this, but some men are better off dead.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It struck me how close and how far William was from the truth.\u00a0 <em>For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God<\/em>, Paul wrote to believing Galatians. \u00a0<em>I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.\u00a0 So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul didn\u2019t think of this blessing as something exclusively for him alone.\u00a0 He explained in some detail how all men and women are \u201cbetter off dead\u201d to sin (Romans 6:1-7 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What shall we say then?\u00a0 Are we to remain in sin so that grace may increase? <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0Absolutely not!\u00a0 How can we who died to sin still live in it? \u00a0Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? \u00a0Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.<\/p>\n<p>For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection. \u00a0We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. \u00a0(For someone who has died has been freed from sin.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>None of this meant anything to Black William.\u00a0 He was obsessed with his own creation.\u00a0 Though he claims that Westworld \u201cfeels more real than the real world,\u201d he also acknowledges to Dolores that \u201cit isn\u2019t because you can\u2019t really fight back and the guests can\u2019t really lose, which means all this is a lie.\u00a0 But we can make it true.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you want that, Dolores, one true thing?\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_condemned\"><\/a>The devil isn\u2019t the only one impacting people\u2019s choices in the real world.\u00a0 And perhaps I should make it explicit that I mean the real world, not the fictional \u201creal world\u201d of Westworld (John 3:16-18 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For this is the way God loved the world: He gave <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_ftn11\">his<\/a> one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. \u00a0For God did not send <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_ftn12\">his<\/a> Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The one who believes in him is not condemned.\u00a0 The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True to form I misunderstood Jesus\u2019 words translated into English.\u00a0 I thought <em>the way God loved the world<\/em> was to send <em>his one and only Son <\/em>to be the ultimate <em>Shibboleth<\/em> of eternal consequence (Judges 12:5, 6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan River opposite Ephraim.\u00a0 Whenever an Ephraimite fugitive said, \u201cLet me cross over,\u201d the men of Gilead asked him, \u201cAre you an Ephraimite?\u201d\u00a0 If he said, \u201cNo,\u201d then they said to him, \u201cSay \u2018Shibboleth!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 If he said, \u201cSibboleth\u201d (and could not pronounce the word correctly), they grabbed him and executed him right there at the fords of the Jordan.\u00a0 On that day 42,000 Ephraimites fell dead.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> sounded like fairly typical <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cover_your_ass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CYA<\/a> language.\u00a0 God washed his hands, as it were, and said, <em>\u201cI am innocent of<\/em> [your] <em>blood.\u00a0 You take care of it yourselves!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Clearly, I did not believe that God is holy.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/04\/funeral-part-3\/#_Pastor\">Pastor<\/a> described the holiness of God in a sermon:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Well, holiness is a very complex idea within Scripture, a very rich idea within Scripture.\u00a0 It describes the perfection of moral purity.\u00a0 It describes the perfection of goodness.\u00a0 It also describes the magnificent otherness of God: That He is not like us, that his nature, his character is greater, bigger, different than anything else within creation.\u00a0 That He is separate from creation, over creation, more significant, more important, better than creation.\u00a0 All these ideas are consumed within this idea of God&#8217;s holiness.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My diminished view of God went hand in hand with my diminished view of his salvation: that He had very little to do with salvation, practically speaking.\u00a0 Salvation had everything to do with the individual who believed, or claimed to <em>believe<\/em>.\u00a0 But Jesus\u2019 saying\u2014<em>No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elk.html#elkush\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elk.html#elkuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<em> him<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> called my do-it-yourself salvation into serious question.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek words translated <em>to condemn<\/em> and <em>should be saved<\/em> in John 3:17 above were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sw.html#swqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a> respectively.\u00a0 Both are verbs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjunctive mood<\/a>: \u201cThe subjunctive mood indicates probability or objective possibility.\u00a0 The action of the verb will possibly happen, depending on certain objective factors or circumstances.\u201d\u00a0 So, technically, \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u1fc3 should have been translated \u201cthat he should condemn\u201d or <em>judge<\/em> rather than as an infinitive <em>to condemn<\/em>.\u00a0 But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">definition<\/a> of the subjunctive mood continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>However if the subjunctive mood is used in a purpose or result clause, then the action should not be thought of as a possible result, but should be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him<\/em>, is quite clearly both the purpose and the result of, <em>For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.\u00a0 <\/em>In other words, that God will not condemn the world but save the world is predicated upon the love of God and the faithfulness of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 It is about as certain as anything can be expressed in Koine Greek.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said: <em>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth<\/em> (<em>he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>), <em>will draw<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elk.html#elkusw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u1f7b\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elk.html#elkuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>all people to myself<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/25\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-8\/#_draws\">powerful drawing, pulling, dragging<\/a> is a promise made by the Son of God.\u00a0 It, too, is about as certain as anything can be expressed in Koine Greek.\u00a0 And it impacts our choices in the real world.<\/p>\n<p>The question for any individual doesn\u2019t boil down to some internal inventory: what do I believe? can I believe?\u00a0 Count on God to supply the requisite faith.\u00a0 The question becomes: will I quit listening to the devil?\u00a0 Am I done yet <em>hurting <\/em>[myself]<em> by kicking against the goads<\/em>?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tables comparing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_Table1\">Genesis 3:2<\/a>; <a
