Then<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a> Jesus told them a parable to show them they<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a> should always pray and not lose heart<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is a story about a persistent widow nagging an unrighteous judge for justice.\u00a0 Finally the unrighteous judge thought to himself, Though I neither fear God nor<\/em>4<\/sup><\/a> have regard for people, yet because this widow keeps on bothering me, I will give her justice, or in the end she will wear me out by her unending pleas.<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Won\u2019t God give<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a> justice to his chosen ones<\/em>, Jesus asked, who cry out to him<\/em>7<\/sup><\/a> day and night? \u00a0Will he delay long to help<\/em>8<\/sup><\/a> them? \u00a0I tell you, he will give them justice speedily<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Those who pursued a law of righteousness<\/em><\/a>10<\/sup><\/a> expected justice<\/em>.\u00a0 They hoped for the overthrow of the Roman government, and that Gentiles would be dealt with by God according to their alignment with Jewish tradition and the law of God.\u00a0 That\u2019s not exactly how things went down.\u00a0 It causes me to wonder what I\u2014one who does not work, but believes<\/a> in the one who declares the ungodly righteous<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a>\u2014 should expect of justice<\/em>.\u00a0 What should I always pray and not lose heart about in this regard?<\/p>\n

The word justice<\/em> in the rhetorical question Won\u2019t God give justice to his chosen ones<\/em>, and its answer he will give them justice speedily<\/em>, is \u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of\u00a0\u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) in Greek.\u00a0 In a very strong way that should not be discounted this promise was fulfilled less than forty years later<\/a>.\u00a0 But when you see Jerusalem<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a> surrounded by armies<\/em>, Jesus said, then know that its desolation has come near. \u00a0Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. \u00a0Those who are inside the city must depart. \u00a0Those who are out in the country must not enter it, because these are days of vengeance<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), to fulfill all that is written<\/em>.13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

It is not lost on me that the justice<\/em> Israel hoped for the Romans<\/a> was also the vengeance<\/em> they received from them<\/a> in 70 A.D.<\/a>\u00a0 I bear that in mind when I read Paul\u2019s letter to the Thessalonians (2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 NET).<\/p>\n

For it is right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to you who are being afflicted to give rest together with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. \u00a0With flaming fire he will mete out<\/em> punishment (\u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) on those who do not know (\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03cc\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) God<\/em> and do not obey (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>the gospel of our Lord Jesus<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0They will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength, when he comes to be glorified among his saints and admired on that day among all who have believed<\/a> \u2013 and you did in fact believe our testimony [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength<\/em> is not the justice<\/em> I hope for those who do not know God<\/em> and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus<\/em>.\u00a0 For Paul also wrote: Do not avenge<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God\u2019s wrath, for it is written,<\/em> \u201cVengeance <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) is mine<\/em><\/strong>, I will repay<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d says the Lord.<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<\/em>There is always the hope that the Lord\u2019s vengeance<\/em> (justice<\/em>) will be more merciful than mine might have been.\u00a0 I and all the Gentiles who have been called to faith<\/a> rather than dealt with according to law or Jewish tradition are the proof.\u00a0 Rather<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Paul continued, if your enemy is hungry<\/em><\/strong>, \u00a0feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing this you will be heaping burning coals<\/a> on his head<\/strong><\/em> [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good<\/em>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

There is a troubling passage in Revelation:\u00a0 Now when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been violently killed because of the word of God and because of the testimony<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a> they had given. \u00a0They cried out<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a> with a loud voice, \u201cHow long, Sovereign Master, holy and true, before you judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) those who live on the earth and avenge<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) our blood?\u201d<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And this was after the four horsemen were sent out to conquer<\/em>,19<\/sup><\/a> to take peace from the earth, so that people would butcher<\/em>20<\/sup><\/a> one another<\/em>,21<\/sup><\/a> cause famine\u2014A quart of wheat will cost a day\u2019s pay and three quarts of barley<\/em>22<\/sup><\/a> will cost a day\u2019s pay<\/em>,23<\/sup><\/a> and kill a fourth of the population of the earth by disease, and by the wild animals of the earth<\/em>.24<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know what to make of it.\u00a0 Was it a revelation of some decadent time when Christ\u2019s witnesses are of such inferior quality to Peter and Paul?\u00a0 Was\u00a0it a revelation behind the veil, so to speak, into what Peter and Paul are actually like?\u00a0 Was\u00a0it what I am meant to become?\u00a0 I thought such bloodlust was at least part of what the Lord\u2019s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control<\/em> [Table<\/a>]25<\/sup><\/a> was saving me from.\u00a0 But the explanation of the fifth seal continued.<\/p>\n

Each of them was given a long white robe<\/em>26<\/sup><\/a> and they were told to rest<\/em>27<\/sup><\/a> for a little longer, until the full number was reached<\/em>28<\/sup><\/a> of both their fellow servants and their brothers who were going to be killed just as they had been<\/em>.29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Obviously the death of a fourth of the earth\u2019s population was not what God considered vengeance<\/em> (or, justice<\/em>) for those who had been violently killed because of the word of God and because of the testimony they had given<\/em>.30<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I kept reading to see what He considered justice (Revelation 16:4-7 NET).<\/p>\n

Then the third angel31<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>poured out his bowl on32<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the rivers and the springs of water, and they turned into blood. \u00a0Now I heard the angel of the waters saying: \u201cYou are just<\/a> (\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>\u2013 the one who is and who was, the Holy One<\/a> \u2013 because<\/a> you have passed these judgments (\u1f14\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>),<\/em> because they poured out the blood of your saints and prophets, so you have given<\/a> them blood to drink.\u00a0 They<\/a> got what they deserved (\u1f04\u03be\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f04\u03be\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)!\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0Then I heard33<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the altar reply, \u201cYes, Lord God, the All-Powerful, your judgments are true and just (\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)!\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can live with that.\u00a0 It sounds like the Lord I am beginning to know and love.\u00a0 And if I think He valued his witnesses too cheaply I am reminded of the purpose of our calling: As it is written,<\/em> \u201cFor your sake<\/a> we encounter death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.\u201d34<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0As for the other seals, trumpets and bowls, even the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength<\/em>, I\u2019m not in a position to judge what is deserved, what weight is sufficient to balance the scale of offense to God afflicted, by unrepentant sinners.\u00a0 I trust that He is just and merciful.\u00a0 And the justice I nag Him about is the mercy upon which all repentance depends: So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who <\/a>shows mercy<\/a><\/em>.35<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Freely you received<\/em>, Jesus said, freely give<\/em>.36<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
