The English word unicorn <\/em>conjures an image \u201cof fantasy or rarity[4<\/a>]<\/sup>\u201d in my mind (see picture<\/a>), much like what is described in the Wikipedia article titled Unicorn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The unicorn is a legendary creature that has been described since antiquity as a beast with a single large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead.<\/em><\/p>\n

In European literature and art, the unicorn has for the last thousand years or so been depicted as a white horse-like or goat-like animal with a long straight horn with spiralling grooves, cloven hooves, and sometimes a goat’s beard\u2026In medieval and Renaissance times, the tusk of the narwhal<\/a> was sometimes sold as a unicorn horn.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2026An equine form of the unicorn was mentioned by the ancient Greeks in accounts of natural history by various writers, including Ctesias<\/a>, Strabo<\/a>, Pliny the Younger<\/a>, Aelian<\/a>[2<\/a>]<\/sup> and Cosmas Indicopleustes<\/a>.[3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The note (50<\/a>) in the NET reads:<\/p>\n

The Hebrew term \u05e8\u05b5\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd (remim) appears to be an alternate spelling of \u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd (r\u02beemim, \u201cwild oxen\u201d; see BDB 910 s.v. \u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05dd).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Tanakh on chabad.org<\/a> had wild oxen <\/em>for \u05e8\u05b5\u05de\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (r\u1d4a’\u0113m<\/em>).\u00a0 Though both English translations of the Septuagint had unicorns <\/em>for \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03cc\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>), rhinoceros <\/em>was also listed as a possible definition. \u00a0Whatever this animal was called, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>), the Lord<\/em> (NET<\/a>), gave a fairly detailed description of its relationship to human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Though strong and probably admired for its strength, this animal was wild, not particularly useful or trustworthy for any necessary work.\u00a0 Here again \u05e8\u05b5\u05a3\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (r\u1d4a’\u0113m<\/em>) was translated wild ox<\/em> in the Tanakh on chabad.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the table below the behavior of a calf <\/em>(\u02bf\u0113\u1e21el<\/em>, \u05e2\u05b5\u0591\u05d2\u05b6\u05dc<\/a>) was compared to that of a young unicorn<\/em> (r\u1d4a’\u0113m<\/em>, \u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05de\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>) in the Masoretic text: the cedars of Lebanon<\/em>\u2026skip like a calf<\/em>\u2026and<\/em>\u2026like a young unicorn<\/em> (Tanakh, KJV) or a young ox<\/em> (NET).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Septuagint reads differently than the Masoretic text.\u00a0 The calf <\/em>(\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u1f79\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) and the son of unicorns<\/em> (\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) were still associated, though possibly contrasted there.\u00a0 I won\u2019t spend time trying to decipher the apparent differences between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint.\u00a0 Here again \u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05de\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (r\u1d4a’\u0113m<\/em>) was translated a young wild ox<\/em> in the Tanakh on chabad.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A creature with a single horn, conventionally called a unicorn is the most common image [see picture<\/a>] on the soapstone stamp seals of the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilization<\/a> (“IVC”), from the centuries around 2000 BC.\u00a0 It has a body more like a cow than a horse, and a curved horn that goes forward, then up at the tip.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is interesting to wonder if the psalmist was thinking of a horn that curved up at the tip, or near the end. \u00a0The Tanakh on chabad.org<\/a> had a wild ox<\/em> for \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05a3\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (r\u1d4a’\u0113m<\/em>) here.<\/p>\n

God (‘\u0113l<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc<\/a>) was likened to the strength <\/em>(NET) or glory <\/em>(Septuagint) of a unicorn in Balaam\u2019s (Numbers 22-24<\/a>) second oracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
