I will call those who were not my people, \u2018My people,\u2019 and I will call her who was unloved, \u2018My beloved<\/i><\/b>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t consider this a quotation of Hosea 2:23 so much as a conclusion.\u00a0 Bill Braun analyzed it as a quotation for any who are interested [Addendum<\/b> 5\/27\/2025: This site is no longer available].\u00a0 The translation of Hosea 2:23 is as follows in the NET: \u201cThen I will plant her as my own in the land.\u00a0 I will have pity on \u2018No Pity\u2019 (Lo-Ruhamah).\u00a0 I will say to \u2018Not My People\u2019 (Lo-Ammi), \u2018You are my people!\u2019\u00a0 And he will say, \u2018You are my God!\u2019\u201d<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 None of this makes much sense without the context (Hosea 1:2 NET).<\/p>\n

When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, he said to him, \u201cGo marry [literally, <\/em>take for yourself]<\/em> a prostitute\u00a0[literally, <\/em>a wife of harlotries; Septuagint<\/a>: \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03b1<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>]<\/em> who will bear illegitimate children conceived through prostitution [literally, <\/em>children of harlotries; Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u1f73\u03ba\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>3<\/sup><\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>],<\/em> because the nation continually commits [Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>]<\/em> spiritual4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>prostitution [Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>] <\/em>by turning away from the Lord\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The note<\/a> in the NET after the phrase I will seek out my lovers<\/i> reads: \u201cThis statement alludes to the practice of sexual rites in the Canaanite fertility cult which attempted to secure agricultural fertility from the Canaanite gods…\u201d\u00a0 So Hosea married<\/i> (literally so he went and took<\/i>) Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim.\u00a0 Then she conceived and gave birth to a son for him<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God told Hosea to name his first son Jezreel, because in a little while I will punish the dynasty of Jehu on account of the bloodshed in the valley of Jezreel<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Gomer gave birth to a daughter and the Lord told Hosea, Name her \u201cNo Pity\u201d (Lo-Ruhamah) because I will no longer have pity on the nation of Israel<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then God told Hosea to name his next son \u201cNot My People\u201d (Lo-Ammi), because you are not my people and I am not your God<\/i>.9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

However<\/i>, the Lord continued, in the future the number of the people of Israel will be like the sand of the sea which can be neither measured nor numbered.\u00a0 Although it was said to them, \u201cYou are not my people,\u201d it will be said to them, \u201cYou are children of the living God!\u201d<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul\u2019s quotation of this verse was identical with that found in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

I looked to the Jewish Virtual Library<\/a> out of curiosity how this story would be interpreted there.\u00a0 Essentially chapter 3 was viewed not as a continuation of the story begun in chapters 1 and 2, but as a restatement of that same story, the \u201creal\u201d story, in fact.\u00a0 In that \u201creal\u201d story Hosea did not \u201clove\u201d a promiscuous woman but \u201cbefriended\u201d her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

To marry such a woman in the first place would be contrary to a law of righteousness<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0 To receive her back again as a wife after having divorced her for unfaithfulness would be unthinkable.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Obviously, God would never command such a thing, therefore He didn\u2019t<\/a>, no matter what the text says.\u00a0 Despite all this fussiness the author(s) of this particular article in the Jewish Virtual Library got the point of Hosea 2:19 and 20 better than I could ever hope to tease out of an English translation:\u00a0 I will commit myself to you forever; I will commit myself to you in righteousness and justice, in steadfast love and tender compassion. \u00a0I will commit myself to you in faithfulness; then you will acknowledge the Lord\u201d<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a> it reads in the NET.\u00a0 What it means according to the Jewish Virtual Library is as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cYHWH will, moreover, espouse her a second time, and in such a way as to insure the permanence of the new marriage for\u2026he will bestow upon her as bride-price the three pairs of qualities, righteousness \u2013 justice, goodness \u2013 graciousness, and loyalty \u2013 devotion to YHWH. I would regard this as an excellent synopsis of Paul\u2019s understanding of the Gospel in his letter to the Romans\u2014if that had been its source.\u00a0 By the way, the note<\/a> in the NET reads: \u201cThe preposition \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0 (bet), which is repeated throughout 2:19-20 [21-22], denotes price paid (BDB 90 s.v. \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0 III.3; e.g., Ezek 3:14). The text contains an allusion to the payment of bridal gifts. The Lord will impute the moral character to Israel that will be necessary for a successful covenant relationship (contra <\/i>4:1).\u201d<\/p>\n

Addendum\u00a0<\/strong>(6\/21\/2015): Jim Searcy<\/a> has published that the Septuagint is a hoax<\/a> written by Origen<\/a> and Eusebius<\/a> 200 hundred years after Christ.\u00a0 \u201cIn fact, the Septuagint \u2018quotes\u2019 from the New Testament and not vice versa\u2026\u201d\u00a0 His contention is that the \u201cKing James Version is the infallible Word of God.\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll re-examine the quotations above with the KJV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
