&#8211; Genesis, Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think I am safe using the word <i>fear<\/i> to describe Jacob\u2019s prognostication that <i>Simeon and Levi<\/i>&#8230;had<i> brought ruin on <\/i>him<i> by making <\/i>him<i> a foul odor among the inhabitants of the land<\/i>, that <i>the Canaanites and the Perizzites<\/i>\u2026would <i>join forces against <\/i>him<i> and attack <\/i>him<i>, and both <\/i>he<i> and <\/i>his<i> family <\/i>would<i> be destroyed!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was not a prophecy; it did not come to pass.\u00a0 It was a rational appraisal of the likely response of men born of Adam (then Noah).\u00a0 <a id=\"_law\"><\/a>And it was a righteous expectation of the law God gave Noah and his sons after the flood (Genesis 9:5, 6 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For your lifeblood I will surely exact punishment, from every living creature I will exact punishment.\u00a0 From each person I will exact punishment for the life of the individual since the man was his relative <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/29\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-5\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Whoever sheds human blood, by other humans must his blood be shed; for in God\u2019s image God has made humankind <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/03\/29\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-5\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Simeon and Levi had perpetrated the kind of violence that brought the flood in the first place (Genesis 6:11-13 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The earth was ruined in the sight of God; the earth was filled with violence<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/06\/27\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-4\/#_Table23\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0God saw the earth, and indeed it was ruined, for all living creatures on the earth were sinful <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/06\/27\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-4\/#_Table25\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0So God said to Noah, \u201cI have decided that all living creatures must die, for the earth is filled with violence because of them.\u00a0 Now I am about to destroy them and the earth\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/06\/27\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-4\/#_Table27\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is a fearful thing to contemplate a God with the power and the will for such destruction (Genesis 6:5-7 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth.\u00a0 Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/04\/psalm-22-part-8\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The Lord regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0So the Lord said, \u201cI will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth \u2013 everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But if I take the Lord\u2019s reasons and offense seriously, his relative tolerance of human evil after the flood is just as fearful a thing if in a different way (Genesis 8:21, 22 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I will never again curse the ground because of humankind, even though the inclination of their minds is evil from childhood on.\u00a0 I will never again destroy everything that lives, as I have just done <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/05\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-3\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0While the earth continues to exist, planting time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/05\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-3\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And thus the law: <i>Whoever sheds human blood, by other humans must his blood be shed<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though Simeon\u2019s and Levi\u2019s die hard antics seem more like justice for Dinah to my religious mind (compared to David\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/\">inaction<\/a> regarding Tamar, or Jacob\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/05\/fear-genesis-part-4\/\">silence<\/a>), the most likely outcome for Dinah did not look good.\u00a0 Both the evil of men and the righteousness of God\u2019s law conspired to catch her up in the violent retribution due Simeon and Levi, or she might have become like one of the slave women her brothers took from Shechem.\u00a0 But Jacob, Dinah, Simeon, Levi and all of their family found <i>favor<\/i> (or, grace) <i>in the sight of the Lord<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have appropriated what the Bible said about Noah to Jacob, Dinah, Simeon, Levi and all of their family.\u00a0 This would have been unthinkable to my religious mind.\u00a0 It assumed that <i>Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord<\/i> because <i>Noah was a godly man; he was blameless among his contemporaries. \u00a0He walked with God <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/10\/fear-deuteronomy-part-15\/#_Table31\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Now I am more and more convinced that my religious mind had the cart before the horse.\u00a0 Noah was a godly man, blameless among his contemporaries, and walked with God because Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.\u00a0 In that light it is not much of a stretch to see the similarity here.<\/p>\n<p><i>Then God said to Jacob, \u201cGo up at once to Bethel and live there.\u00a0 Make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This was God\u2019s solution despite the fact that Simeon and Levi at least (and perhaps at most) should have died according to his own law.\u00a0 I am not accusing God of wrongdoing.\u00a0 He never bound Himself to law when it came to showing favor or mercy.\u00a0 <i>I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/\">He said to Moses<\/a>. \u00a0And when Paul analyzed the Gospel that my religious mind was so intent on converting to a new law, he reiterated that point and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/27\/romans-part-35\/\">added<\/a>, <i>So then,<\/i> <i>it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote13sym\">shows mercy<\/a><\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>So Jacob told his household and all who were with him, \u201cGet rid of the foreign gods you have among you. \u00a0Purify yourselves and change your clothes. \u00a0Let us go up at once to Bethel. \u00a0Then I will make an altar there to God, who responded to me in my time of distress and has been with me wherever I went.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I see it in this context the Gospel of Jesus Christ mitigates my fear concerning God\u2019s \u201ctolerance\u201d of human evil after the flood. \u00a0The Gospel does not belong, and is perverted and misunderstood, in the world created by religious minds.\u00a0 Where it <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/30\/romans-part-15\/\">belongs<\/a>, where it becomes <i>the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> who believe<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0is in the real world of human sin.\u00a0 I was surprised, given my religious prejudices, that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abel_Ferrara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abel Ferrara<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/zoelund.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zo\u00eb Lund<\/a> had walked this ground before me in the movie she wrote and he directed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bad_Lieutenant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bad Lieutenant<\/a>\u201d (1992), starring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/?title=Harvey_Keitel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvey Keitel<\/a> in the title role.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_confession\"><\/a>Bad LT was not merely a bad cop, he was a hardcore sinner, without natural affection.\u00a0 Bad LT\u2019s decadence was so demoralizing I cried out loud, \u201cWhy am I watching this?\u201d\u00a0 About that time one of the \u2018B\u2019 stories came to the forefront when Bad LT overheard a nun\u2019s confession.<\/p>\n<p>The nun had been raped on the altar in her church.\u00a0 She seemed to react like any other woman might react while being raped.\u00a0 She was a bit less modest in the examination room than I might have expected, but nothing so extreme that I did anything but note the fact.\u00a0 Her confession, however, was totally unexpected.\u00a0 A curious thing happens when someone actually believes she has been forgiven by the Sovereign God and that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/12\/11\/romans-part-34\/\">all things work together for good<\/a> for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose boys,\u201d she said, \u201cthose sad raging boys.\u00a0 They came to me as the needy do.\u00a0 And like many of the needy they were rude.\u00a0 Like all the needy they took.\u00a0 And like all the needy they needed.\u00a0 Father, I knew them.\u00a0 They learn in our school and they play in our school yard and they are good boys&#8230;.Jesus turned water to wine.\u00a0 I ought to have turned bitter semen into fertile sperm, hatred to love, and maybe to have saved their souls.\u00a0 [Bad LT exited then and did not hear the rest of her confession.] \u00a0They did not love me, but I ought to have loved them, for Jesus loved those who were vile to Him.\u00a0 And never again shall I encounter two boys whose prayer was more poignant, more legible, more anguished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later Bad LT came to speak to the nun as she prayed, first prostrate then on her knees, in church.\u00a0 \u201cListen to me, Sister,\u201d he said, \u201clisten to me good.\u00a0 The other cops will just put these guys through the system.\u00a0 They\u2019re juveniles.\u00a0 They\u2019ll walk.\u00a0 But I\u2019ll beat the system and do justice, real justice for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have already forgiven them,\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on, Lady.\u00a0 These guys put out cigarette butts on your &#8211; Get with the program.\u00a0 How could you\u2014how could you forgive these motherfu\u2014these, these guys?\u00a0 Excuse me.\u00a0 How could you?\u00a0 Deep down inside don\u2019t you want them to pay for what they did to you?\u00a0 Don\u2019t you want this crime avenged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve forgiven them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut \u2013 do you have the right?\u00a0 You\u2019re not the only woman in the world.\u00a0 You\u2019re not even the only nun. You\u2019re forgiveness will leave blood in its wake.\u00a0 What if these guys do this to other nuns?\u00a0 Other virgins? Old women who\u2019ll die from the shock?\u00a0 Do you have the right to let these boys go free?\u00a0 Can you bear the burden, Sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk to Jesus,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cPray.\u00a0 You do believe in God, don\u2019t you? that Jesus Christ died for your sins?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nun left Bad LT alone in the church.\u00a0 He moaned and cried out from the floor. \u00a0Then he had a vision of Jesus. \u00a0First, he blamed Jesus for His perceived absence in Bad LT\u2019s wretched life. \u00a0But eventually he begged for forgiveness and direction.\u00a0 Suddenly Bad LT became the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+23:39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repentant thief<\/a> on the cross.\u00a0 Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penitent_thief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thief<\/a> he had only hours to live.\u00a0 Unlike the thief he was free to do one more thing.\u00a0 His choice, to pass on some of the mercy the Lord and the nun had shown him, was at least as interesting as David\u2019s choices concerning his sons Amnon and Absalom.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob\u2019s household and all who were with him <i>gave Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their possession and the rings that were in their ears<\/i>. \u00a0<i>Jacob buried them under the oak near Shechem and they started on their journey<\/i>. \u00a0<i>The surrounding cities were afraid<\/i> (<em>\u1e25it\u00e2<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h2847\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d7\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/35\/5\/t_bibles_35005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fobos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u1f79\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <i>of God<\/i>, <i>and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/23\/fear-genesis-part-5\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The note (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Genesis+35:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15<\/a>) in the NET reads: \u201c<i>Heb<\/i> \u2018and the fear of God was upon the cities which were round about them.\u2019 The expression \u2018fear of God\u2019 apparently refers (1) to a fear of God (objective genitive; God is the object of their fear). (2) But it could mean \u2018fear from God,\u2019 that is, fear which God placed in them (cf. NRSV \u201ca terror from God\u201d). Another option (3) is that the divine name is used as a superlative here, referring to \u2018tremendous fear\u2019 (cf. NEB \u2018were panic-stricken\u2019; NASB \u2018a great terror\u2019).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Addendum<\/b>: June 8, 2025<\/span><br \/>\n<span
