and Mercy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I focused on God\u2019s law as the primary revelation of his will, justice and mercy seemed like oppositional concepts.\u00a0 <i>Justice<\/i> meant the uniform application of law (punishment mainly) and <i>mercy<\/i> was an exception to that uniform application.\u00a0 As <i>justice<\/i> increased <i>mercy<\/i> decreased.\u00a0 As <i>mercy<\/i> increased <i>justice<\/i> decreased (<i>Fig. 1<\/i>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1917\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1917\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1917 \" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/JusticeMercy-1.jpg\" alt=\"Slide 1\" width=\"259\" height=\"196\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Fig. 1<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p><i>Justice<\/i> served as a limit on <i>mercy<\/i> as <i>mercy<\/i> limited <i>justice<\/i>.\u00a0 So the righteousness of <i>justice <\/i>and <i>mercy<\/i> was a mean between these extremes, because <i>justice<\/i> was by definition <i>unmerciful<\/i>, at least in part, and <i>mercy<\/i> was by definition <i>unjust<\/i>, at least in part.\u00a0 This made perfect sense to my religious mind, until I read the Bible.<\/p>\n<p><i>Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites, <\/i>Jesus said. \u00a0<i>You give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you neglect what is more important in the law \u2013 justice<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <i>mercy<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/ele.html#eleos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), <i>and faithfulness<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)! \u00a0<i>You should have done these things without neglecting the others<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Love was added to this list in Luke\u2019s Gospel account: <i>But<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <i>woe to you Pharisees!\u00a0 You give a tenth of your mint, rue, and every herb, yet<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <i>you neglect<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <i>justice<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>) <i>and love<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/agap.html#agaphn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/agap.html#agaph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) <i>for God!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How could mercy be both an exception to the uniform application of law and, along with justice and faithfulness, more important in the law than tithing mint, dill and cumin?\u00a0 Jesus, it seemed, considered mercy part of the justice of the law rather than a limit upon it.\u00a0 <i>Go and learn what this saying means<\/i>, He said, quoting Hosea, \u201c<b><i>I want <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/10\/08\/luke-822-56\/#sdfootnote50sym\">mercy<\/a> <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/ele.html#eleos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <b><i>and not sacrifice<\/i><\/b>.\u201d\u00a0 <i>For I did not come to call the righteous, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/10\/08\/luke-822-56\/#sdfootnote51sym\">but<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/10\/08\/luke-822-56\/#sdfootnote52sym\">sinners<\/a><\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> the Pharisees had asked, revealing their concern over the possibility of defilement.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>When <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/10\/08\/luke-822-56\/#sdfootnote48sym\">Jesus<\/a> heard this he <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/10\/08\/luke-822-56\/#sdfootnote49sym\">said<\/a>, \u201cThose who are healthy don\u2019t need a physician, but those who are sick do<\/i>,\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> revealing his concern for the mercy that was an important part of the law.\u00a0 <a id=\"_knowledge\"><\/a>On another occasion Jesus went even further and told the Pharisees, <i>If you had known what this means: <\/i>\u201c<b><i>I want <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/05\/25\/the-day-of-the-lord-part-2\/#sdfootnote11sym\">mercy<\/a> <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/ele.html#eleos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <b><i>and not sacrifice<\/i><\/b>,\u201d <i>you would not have condemned the innocent<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 disciples had been gathering grain and eating the grain they had gathered on the Sabbath day.\u00a0 It was about as direct a violation<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> of the law of the Sabbath as I can imagine, but Jesus declared them <i>innocent<\/i>, adding that the Pharisees and I would agree with Him if we understood the mercy that was an important part of the law.<\/p>\n<p><i>Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> an expert in religious law asked Jesus (Luke 10:26-28 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He said to him, \u201cWhat is written in the law?\u00a0 How do you understand it?\u201d \u00a0The expert answered, <em>\u201c<\/em><b><i>Love <\/i><\/b><em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/agap.html#agaphseis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/agap.html#agapaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em><b> <i>the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind<\/i><\/b>, and <b><i>love your neighbor as yourself<\/i><\/b>.\u201d \u00a0Jesus said to him, \u201cYou have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The law expert asked for clarification of the term <i>neighbor<\/i>.\u00a0 Jesus told a story:\u00a0 <i>A man\u2026fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him up, and went off, leaving him half dead<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Two other men passed the robbers\u2019 victim by, but\u00a0one man <i>felt compassion for him<\/i>. \u00a0<i>He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. \u00a0Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. \u00a0The next day<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> <i>he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying,<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> <i>\u201cTake care of him, and whatever else you spend, I will repay you when I come back this way.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus asked, <i>\u201cWhich<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> <i>of these three do you think became a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?\u201d \u00a0The expert in religious law said, \u201cThe one who showed mercy<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/ele.html#eleos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <i>to him.\u201d \u00a0So<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> <i>Jesus said to him, \u201cGo and do the same.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So <i>mercy<\/i> shown to a stranger defined the term <i>neighbor<\/i>, and became the justice of the law of loving God and one\u2019s neighbor.\u00a0 Beyond that this was the Gospel message in answer to the question, <i>what must I do to inherit eternal life? <\/i>\u00a0Clearly my religious mind was in error.<\/p>\n<p>When Matthew quoted Isaiah his primary focus was on Jesus\u2019 fulfillment of the part of the prophecy that read, <b><i>He will not quarrel or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though, <i>Great crowds followed<\/i> [Jesus], <i>and he healed them all\u2026he sternly warned them not to make him known<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I am more interested here in the rest of the prophecy: <b><i>Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I take great delight<\/i><\/b><i>. \u00a0<b>I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice <\/b><\/i>(\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd) <b><i>to the nations<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<b><i>He will not break a bruised reed or extinguish a smoldering wick, until he brings justice <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>) <b><i>to victory.<\/i><\/b><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As I began to recognize Jesus as the primary revelation of God\u2019s will my understanding of justice and mercy began to change.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_category\"><\/a>Justice and mercy are not in opposition but joined like a category I could only call justice-mercy (<i>Fig. 2<\/i>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1919\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/slide-1-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1919\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1919\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1919\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/JusticeMercy-2.jpg\" alt=\"Slide 2\" width=\"259\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Fig. 2<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Though justice-mercy may not actually be infinite in its capacity to increase, it is virtually infinite relative to my naive understanding.\u00a0 Probably it should be thought of as justice-mercy-faithfulness-love.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not clever enough to represent that concept graphically.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum\u00a0<\/strong>(6\/24\/2015): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moresureword.com\/IDPapers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Searcy<\/a> has published that the Septuagint is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moresureword.com\/LXXHOAX.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hoax<\/a> written by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Origen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Origen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eusebius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eusebius<\/a> 200 hundred years after Christ.\u00a0 \u201cIn fact, the Septuagint \u2018quotes\u2019 from the New Testament and not vice versa\u2026\u201d\u00a0 His contention is that the \u201cKing James Version is the infallible Word of God.\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll re-examine the quotations above
