in the Law, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I want to study the background information in the Old Testament to see if I can understand what Jesus, Paul and the New Testament writers meant by <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 Since I\u2019m treating \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 like the unknown <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/19\/adultery-and-x\/\">X<\/a><\/em>, I\u2019ll track the Hebrew word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05b8\u05d0\u05b7\u05e3<\/a> (<em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<\/em>), equivalent to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> in Greek, <em>to commit adultery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The first occurrence is Exodus 20:14 (NET) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/10\/jedidiah-part-4\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]: <em>You shall not commit adultery<\/em> (<em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05e0\u05d0\u05e3<\/a>).\u00a0 And the next is Leviticus 20:10 (NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/26\/jedidiah-part-1\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>) where the penalty for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e0\u05d0\u05e3<\/a> (<em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<\/em>) is described:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a man commits adultery <em>(<\/em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e0\u05d0\u05e3<\/a>)<\/em> with his neighbor\u2019s wife, both the adulterer <em>(<\/em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05e0\u05d0\u05e3<\/a>)<\/em> and the adulteress <em>(<\/em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05d4\u05e0\u05d0\u05e4\u05ea<\/a>)<\/em> must be put to death <em>[See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/25\/adultery-in-the-law-part-1\/#_Addendum2a\">Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What follows is a list of other capital offenses (Leviticus 20:11 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>\u0161\u0101\u1e35a\u1e07<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7901\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e9\u05db\u05d1<\/a>) <\/em>with his father\u2019s wife, he has exposed his father\u2019s nakedness.\u00a0 Both of them must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I assume that the father was already dead, otherwise the law is redundant and falls under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5003\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05b8\u05d0\u05b7\u05e3<\/a> (<em>n\u0101&#8217;ap\u0304<\/em>).\u00a0 Similarly in Leviticus 20:12 (NET) I assume that the son was dead:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>\u0161\u0101\u1e35a\u1e07<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7901\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e9\u05db\u05d1<\/a>) <\/em>with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death.\u00a0 They have committed <em>(<\/em>\u02bf\u0101\u015b\u00e2<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6213\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em> perversion <em>(<\/em>te\u1e07el<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h8397\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05d1\u05dc<\/a>)<\/em>; their blood guilt is on themselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The list continues (Leviticus 20:13-16 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>\u0161\u0101\u1e35a\u1e07<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7901\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e9\u05db\u05d1<\/a>) <\/em>with a male as one has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>mi\u0161k\u0101\u1e07<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h4904\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05de\u05e9\u05db\u05d1\u05d9<\/a>) <\/em>with a woman, the two of them have committed <em>(<\/em>\u02bf\u0101\u015b\u00e2<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6213\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5<\/a>) <\/em>an abomination <em>(<\/em>t\u00f4\u02bf\u0113\u1e07\u00e2<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h8441\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05d5\u05e2\u05d1\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 They must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves. \u00a0If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>l\u0101qa\u1e25<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3947\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e7\u05d7<\/a>) <\/em>with both a woman and her mother, it is lewdness <em>(<\/em>zimm\u00e2<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h2154\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d6\u05de\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 Both he and they must be burned to death, so there is no lewdness <em>(<\/em>zimm\u00e2<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h2154\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d6\u05de\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em> in your midst <em>[See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/25\/adultery-in-the-law-part-1\/#_Addendum2b\">Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>. \u00a0If a man has <em>(<\/em>n\u0101\u1e6fan<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5414\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05ea\u05df<\/a>) <\/em>sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>\u0161\u1d4a\u1e35\u014d\u1e07e\u1e6f<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7903\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e9\u05db\u05d1\u05ea\u05d5<\/a>) <\/em>with any animal, he must be put to death, and you must kill the animal. \u00a0If a woman approaches any animal to have sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>r\u0101\u1e07a\u02bf<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7250\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05e8\u05d1\u05e2\u05d4<\/a>) <\/em>with it, you must kill the woman, and the animal must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Leviticus 20:17 (NET) offenders are to be <em>cut off<\/em> (probably executed) <em>in the sight of the children of their people<\/em>, and in verse 18 (NET), <em>cut off from the midst of their people<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>l\u0101qa\u1e25<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3947\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e7\u05d7<\/a>)<\/em> with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or his mother, so that he sees her nakedness and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgrace <em>(<\/em>\u1e25ese\u1e0f<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h2617\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d7\u05e1\u05d3<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 They must be cut off in the sight of the children of their people.\u00a0 He has exposed his sister\u2019s nakedness; he will bear his punishment for iniquity <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/10\/fear-deuteronomy-part-15\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>\u0161\u0101\u1e35a\u1e07<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7901\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e9\u05db\u05d1<\/a>)<\/em> with a menstruating woman and uncovers her nakedness, he has laid bare her fountain of blood and she has exposed the fountain of her blood, so both of them must be cut off from the midst of their people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, the punishment incurred in Leviticus 20:19-21 was childlessness.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You must not expose the nakedness of your mother\u2019s sister and your father\u2019s sister, for such a person has laid bare his own close relative.\u00a0 They must bear their punishment for iniquity <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/10\/fear-deuteronomy-part-15\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0If a man has sexual intercourse <em>(<\/em>\u0161\u0101\u1e35a\u1e07<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7901\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e9\u05db\u05d1<\/a>)<\/em> with his aunt, he has exposed his uncle\u2019s nakedness; they must bear responsibility for their sin, they will die childless <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/10\/fear-deuteronomy-part-15\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0If a man has sexual intercourse with <em>(<\/em>l\u0101qa\u1e25<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3947\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05e7\u05d7<\/a>)<\/em> his brother\u2019s wife, it is indecency <em>(<\/em>nid\u00e2<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5079\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05d3\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 He has exposed his brother\u2019s nakedness; they will be childless.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I assume that the execution of this sentence was intentionally left to God (in the form of reproductive issues) rather than to men (infanticide).\u00a0 But it would be difficult to demonstrate except in the most oblique way.\u00a0 Abraham (Abram) for instance married his niece<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/25\/adultery-in-the-law-part-1\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Sarai more than <em>four hundred thirty years<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/25\/adultery-in-the-law-part-1\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> before the law prohibited<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/25\/adultery-in-the-law-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> such marriage.\u00a0 What is intriguing about this is that until God intervened, fulfilling his promise to Abram, <em>Sarai was barren; she had no children<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/25\/adultery-in-the-law-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whether these sentences were ever actually executed in a systematic way in Israel is a question I\u2019ll leave for others.\u00a0 My interest is simply to introduce the question:\u00a0 Is Leviticus 20:11-21 what Jesus, Paul and the New Testament writers meant by the Greek word \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum<\/strong>: January 16, 2019<br \/>\nA table comparing <a
