The Hebrew word translated my brethren <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and my countrymen <\/i>(NET) was \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u0591\u05d9<\/a><\/span> (‘\u0101\u1e25<\/i><\/span>). It was translated \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd7\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1fd7\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (BLB) and \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (Elpenor) in the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was accurate and descriptive. The women knew who he meant. This was before the Holy Spirit was given at Pentecost<\/a>. This is when I might have imagined some kind of reprimand or rebuke. Granted, Jesus actually believed the Scripture that said, <\/span>\u201c\u2018I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered<\/a>.\u2019<\/i><\/span>\u201d16<\/sup><\/a> He was probably less likely to reprove his disciples for their \u201cfailure\u201d to man up and disobey this Scripture than my misplaced pride and ego would be.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, He didn’t call his disciples <\/span>my brothers <\/i><\/span>(\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>) because of anything they had done, but because of what He had faithfully accomplished for them on the cross. There appears to have been some confusion about what happened that morning (Mark 16:8-11 NET):<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then [<\/em>Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome<\/a>]<\/em> went out and ran from the tomb, for17<\/sup><\/a><\/em> terror and bewilderment had seized them. And they said18<\/sup><\/a><\/em> nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Early on the first day of the week, after he arose, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven out seven demons. She went out and told those who were with him, while they were mourning19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and weeping. And when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Luke added (Luke 24:8-12 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the women remembered [Jesus’<\/a>]<\/em> words, and when they returned from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> mother of James, and the other women with them who21<\/sup><\/a><\/em> told these things to the apostles. But these<\/a> words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth<\/a>; then he went home, wondering what had happened [Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John filled in many of the details (John 20:1-17 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now very early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been moved away from the entrance. So she went running to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them, \u201cThey have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don\u2019t know where they have put him!\u201d Then Peter and the other disciple set out to go to the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down and saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon22<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Peter, who had been following him, arrived and went right into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, and the face cloth, which had been around Jesus\u2019 head, not lying with the strips of linen cloth but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, came in, and he saw and believed. (For they did not yet understand the scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So the disciples went back to their homes.23<\/sup><\/a><\/em> But Mary stood outside the tomb24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> weeping. As she wept, she bent down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus\u2019 body had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, \u201cWoman, why are you weeping?\u201d Mary replied, \u201cThey have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him!\u201d When25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.26<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said to her, \u201cWoman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?\u201d Because she thought he was the gardener, she said to him, \u201cSir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him.\u201d Jesus28<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said to her, \u201cMary.\u201d29<\/sup><\/a><\/em> She turned and said to him in Aramaic,30<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cRabboni\u201d (which means \u201cTeacher\u201d). Jesus31<\/sup><\/a><\/em> replied, \u201cDo not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my32<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Father. Go to my brothers (\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>)<\/a><\/em> and tell them, \u2018I am ascending to my Father (\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5)<\/em> and your Father (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1 \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em>, to my God and your God.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I pause here to highlight that Jesus called his disciples my brothers <\/i>(\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>). Beyond this he called God my Father <\/i>(\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5) and your Father <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1 \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>). This is quite different from what He said to those Judeans who had believed him<\/i>:33<\/sup><\/a> You people are from your father<\/a> the devil <\/i>(\u1f51\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03ba<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b2\u1f79\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>), and you want to do what your father <\/i>(\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd) desires<\/i>.34<\/sup><\/a> Here, too, it is not because of anything his disciples had done but what Jesus had accomplished for them on the cross.<\/span><\/p>\n

John continued (John 20:18-22 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary35<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Magdalene came and informed the disciples, \u201cI have seen36<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the Lord!\u201d And she told them what Jesus had said to her.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week<\/a>, the disciples had gathered together<\/a> and locked the doors of the place because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his<\/a> side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. So Jesus said to them again, \u201cPeace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.\u201d And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, \u201cReceive the Holy Spirit. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I pause here to highlight how Jesus reprised the scene from creation when the Lord God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being<\/i>.37<\/sup><\/a> So also it is written<\/i>, Paul contrasted these events, \u201cThe first man, Adam, became a living person\u201d; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit<\/i>.38<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

John continued, quoting Jesus (John 20:23 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

If you forgive (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> anyone\u2019s sins, they are forgiven (\u1f00\u03c6\u1f73\u03c9\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em>; if you retain anyone\u2019s sins, they are retained.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus taught us to pray: and forgive <\/i>(\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>) us our debts, as we ourselves have forgiven<\/a> <\/i>(\u1f00\u03c6\u1f75\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) our debtors<\/i>.39<\/sup><\/a> Then He explained: For if you forgive <\/i>(\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) others their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive <\/i>(\u1f00\u03c6\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) you. John continued (John 20:24-29 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus<\/a> came [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. The other disciples told him, \u201cWe have seen the Lord!\u201d But he replied, \u201cUnless I see the wounds from the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the wounds from the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Eight days later the disciples were again together in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, \u201cPeace be with you!\u201d Then he said to Thomas, \u201cPut your finger here, and examine my hands. Extend your hand and put it into my side. Do not continue in your unbelief, but believe.\u201d Thomas41<\/sup><\/a><\/em> replied to him, \u201cMy Lord and my God!\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cHave you believed because you have seen me?42<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Blessed are the people who have not seen and yet have believed.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mark wrote (Mark 16:14 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Then43<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he appeared to the Eleven themselves, while they were eating, and he rebuked (\u1f60\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f40\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they did not believe those who had seen him resurrected.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’ve heard that Peter<\/a> was the source for Mark’s Gospel account. It is interesting to consider that Peter, who did not make any mental connection to Jesus’ teaching when he entered the empty tomb, recalled Jesus’ rebuke for unbelief while John<\/a>, who believed when he entered the empty tomb, illustrated the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge<\/i>,44<\/sup><\/a> showing how often Jesus intervened with personal appearances to cause his unbelieving brothers <\/i>to <\/i>believe. <\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, only Mark’s Gospel reveals that the women said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.<\/i>45<\/sup><\/a> This was presumably before they encountered Jesus and left<\/a> the tomb quickly, with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples<\/i>.46<\/sup><\/a> Putting these accounts together helps me see that Jesus’ love for his female brothers<\/i> who came early that Sunday morning to the tomb was the same. He didn’t wait around for his brothers <\/i>to meet Him in Galilee<\/a>: \u201cDo not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. They will see me there.\u201d<\/i>47<\/sup><\/a> Going to Galilee to meet Jesus was not the act that defined Jesus’ brothers<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus spoke the words, \u201cmy brothers,\u201d and made it so<\/a>, overwhelming their unbelief (even Mary Magdalene came at the appointed time<\/a> seeking a corpse rather than a living God) with his presence. And we know that all things work together for good for those who love<\/a> God, who are called according to his purpose<\/i>,48<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote. And I, when I am lifted up<\/a> from the earth<\/i>, Jesus promised, will draw all people to myself<\/i>.49<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul wrote (1 Corinthians 15:1-11 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1f77<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em>, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you\u2014unless you believed in vain.
