After Jacob and his family spent some time in Bethel<\/a> they moved on to Ephrath (Bethlehem).\u00a0 On the way Rachel went into labor \u2013 and her labor was hard. \u00a0When her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid<\/i> (y\u0101r\u0113’
\n<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9<\/a>), for you are having another son.\u201d<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> changed the word to \u03b8\u03ac\u03c1\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> in Greek.\u00a0 \u201cHave courage<\/i> (\u03b8\u03ac\u03c1\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>), son!<\/i>\u00a0 Jesus said to the paralytic lying on a mat.\u00a0 Your<\/a> sins are forgiven<\/a>.\u201d<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 With her dying breath<\/i>, Rachel named him Ben-Oni<\/i> [NET note 38<\/a>: \u201cson of my suffering\u201d]. \u00a0But his father called him Benjamin<\/i> [NET note 39<\/a>: \u201cson of the (or \u201cmy\u201d) right hand\u201d] instead<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Rachel was Jacob\u2019s favorite wife.\u00a0 Her father had tricked him into marrying her sister Leah as well.\u00a0 Bilhah and Zilpah, Rachel\u2019s and Leah\u2019s servant girls, were given to Jacob when the sisters vied with each other for their husband\u2019s affection.\u00a0 Joseph, Rachel\u2019s firstborn, was Jacob\u2019s favorite son.\u00a0 Joseph\u2019s elder brothers hated him.\u00a0 On top of that Joseph had a couple of dreams which indicated to his brothers and Jacob that Joseph thought he would rule over them.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Joseph\u2019s brothers decided to kill him.\u00a0 Reuben, Jacob\u2019s firstborn, talked his younger siblings down from murder.\u00a0 They put Joseph in a dry cistern.\u00a0 Reuben hoped to return later to rescue him.\u00a0 Judah\u2014Leah\u2019s fourth born son after Reuben, Simeon and Levi\u2014said to his brothers, \u201cWhat profit is there if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? \u00a0Come, let\u2019s sell him to the Ishmaelites, but let\u2019s not lay a hand on him, for after all, he is our brother, our own flesh.\u201d\u00a0 His brothers agreed<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Ishmaelites sold Joseph to Potiphar the Egyptian, and eventually Joseph became a ruler in Egypt<\/a> because of his ability to interpret prophetic dreams.<\/p>\n

There was a famine in the land and Jacob sent ten of Joseph\u2019s brothers to Egypt to buy grain.\u00a0 Now Joseph was the ruler of the country, the one who sold grain to all the people of the country.\u00a0 Joseph\u2019s brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the ground<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. \u00a0Then Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them, and he said to them, \u201cYou are spies; you have come to see if our land is vulnerable!\u201d<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Though I have heard it many times I am not persuaded that Joseph had some wise master plan to test his brothers\u2019 repentance.\u00a0 I think he was the outcast little brother who had his elder brothers right where he wanted them, and he wanted to make them squirm.\u00a0 Beyond that he wanted to see his\u00a0younger brother Benjamin.\u00a0 But when he heard his brothers\u2019 fears, he was moved, perhaps even to a repentance of his own:\u00a0 They said to one other, \u201cSurely we\u2019re being punished because of our brother, because we saw how distressed he was when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen. \u00a0That is why this distress has come on us!\u201d \u00a0Reuben said to them, \u201cDidn\u2019t I say to you, \u2018Don\u2019t sin against the boy,\u2019 but you wouldn\u2019t listen? \u00a0So now we must pay for shedding his blood!\u201d<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Joseph spoke to them through an interpreter, but understood their language as they whispered among themselves.\u00a0 He turned away from them and wept<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here, I can be persuaded that Joseph began to formulate a plan to both save face as a ruler of Egypt who had embarked on a path of revenge, and to share with his brothers some of the mercy the Lord had shown him.\u00a0 When he turned around and spoke to them again, he had Simeon taken from them and tied up before their eyes. \u00a0Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to return each man\u2019s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. \u00a0His orders were carried out<\/i>.9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

On their return journey one of the brothers discovered the money in his sack.\u00a0 They were dismayed; they turned trembling one to another and said, \u201cWhat in the world has God done to us?\u201d<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The brothers were so sure that God was punishing them they misunderstood his mercy.\u00a0 The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly to us and treated us as if we were spying on the land<\/i>,11<\/sup><\/a> they told Jacob their father.\u00a0 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, \u201cThis is how I will find out if you are honest men.\u00a0 Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for your hungry households and go. \u00a0But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are honest men and not spies.\u00a0 Then I will give your brother back to you and you may move about freely in the land.\u201d<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When they were emptying their sacks, there was each man\u2019s bag of money in his sack!\u00a0 When they and their father saw the bags of money, they were afraid<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>).13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the Septuagint<\/a> this was translated \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a mountain.\u00a0 And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became<\/a> white as light <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0Then Moses<\/a> and Elijah also appeared<\/a> before them, talking with him<\/i> [Table<\/a>].14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peter, James and John took all this in stride.\u00a0 They had been with Jesus awhile by then and were becoming somewhat accustomed to the spectacular and miraculous events that accompanied Him.<\/p>\n

Peter offered to build three shelters (or, shrines) to honor Jesus, Moses and Elijah.\u00a0 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, \u201cThis is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. \u00a0Listen to him!\u201d \u00a0When the disciples heard this, they were overwhelmed with fear <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) and threw<\/a> themselves down with their faces to the ground <\/i>[Table<\/a>].15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to write about the relationship of these two passages without first considering the Son of God<\/i>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>I can\u2019t help but feel a great sympathy for those who pursued a law of righteousness<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 About the time they got a really firm grasp on the fact that Yahweh was not like the gods of the nations, He visited them as a pagan myth<\/a>, a Son of God<\/i>.\u00a0 Growing up I would have interpreted the statement, God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him<\/i>,17<\/sup><\/a> this way: \u201cYahweh has sent Jesus into the world so that we may live through Him.\u201d\u00a0 But the more seriously I take Jesus\u2019 words, before Abraham came into existence, I am!<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a> the more I am compelled to acknowledge that it was Yahweh (He is<\/i>; I am<\/i> was literally the unspeakable name of God) who was sent into the world to be born as a human being named Jesus<\/i> (the Greek translation\u00a0of Yahweh saves<\/a><\/i> in Hebrew) so that we may live through Him [Addendum<\/strong> 7\/22\/2025: Much of this came into question in my own mind years later<\/a>].\u00a0 Then Yahweh\/Jesus began to speak of another God, his Father, whom no one had known: no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son decides to reveal him<\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The voice that frightened Peter, James and John also spoke after Jesus\u2019 baptism, This is my one dear Son; in him I take great delight<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 After Jesus walked on the water and calmed the storm, those who were in the boat<\/a> worshiped him, saying, \u201cTruly you are the Son of God.\u201d<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peter testified, \u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.\u201d \u00a0And<\/a> Jesus answered him, \u201cYou are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven!\u201d<\/i> [Table<\/a>]22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he instructed his disciples<\/a> not to tell anyone that he was the Christ<\/i>.23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And as they came down the mountain after his transfiguration Jesus commanded them, \u201cDo not tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised<\/a> from the dead.\u201d<\/i>24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The reason for this gag order was fairly obvious (Matthew 26:63-66 NET):<\/p>\n

The high priest25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said to [Jesus]<\/em>, \u201cI charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.\u201d \u00a0Jesus said to him, \u201cYou have said it yourself. \u00a0But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand<\/i> of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven<\/i>.\u201d \u00a0Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared, \u201cHe has blasphemed! \u00a0Why do we still need witnesses? \u00a0Now you have heard the26<\/sup><\/a><\/em> blasphemy! \u00a0What is your verdict?\u201d \u00a0They answered,27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cHe is guilty and deserves death<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I was curious how the three carried out the Lord\u2019s command to tell about the vision after Jesus\u2019 resurrection.\u00a0 James, John\u2019s brother, didn\u2019t write any of the New Testament and Herod had him executed with a sword<\/i>28<\/sup><\/a> early in the first century.\u00a0 Peter described Jesus as both Lord and Christ but did not mention the offensive Son of God<\/i> in any of his recorded sermons in Acts.\u00a0 In fact, in one sermon it seemed that Peter was still making Jesus equal to Moses: \u201cMoses<\/a> said<\/a>,<\/i> \u2018The Lord your<\/a> God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers<\/i><\/b>.\u2019\u201d<\/b><\/i>29<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Did Peter not know that Moses was<\/i> faithful in all God\u2019s<\/i><\/b> house<\/i><\/b> as a servant\u2026<\/i>[Table<\/a>] But Christ is faithful as a son over God\u2019s house<\/i>?30<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or am I in error when I assume that he was ascribing this\u00a0prophecy to Christ, the Son of God?\u00a0 Peter did however recount the story of the transfiguration in his second letter (2 Peter 1:16-18 NET):<\/p>\n

For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return of our Lord Jesus Christ; no, we were eyewitnesses of his grandeur. \u00a0For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: \u201cThis is my31<\/sup><\/a><\/em> dear Son, in whom I am delighted.\u201d \u00a0When this voice was conveyed from heaven, we ourselves heard it, for we were with him on the32<\/sup><\/a><\/em> holy mountain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John was the one who wrote most forthrightly about Jesus as the Son of God.\u00a0 In all fairness to Peter, John probably didn\u2019t write any of these things until after 70 A.D.<\/a> when the ecclesiastical power of those who pursued a law of righteousness<\/i><\/a> was destroyed.\u00a0 And this is where I began to see the relationship of the two fears (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>).\u00a0 Both groups of men were eyewitnesses to the mercy of God and both groups feared punishment because God\u2019s mercy did not match their preconceptions (or their rulers\u2019 preconceptions) of \u201cwhat is,\u201d or \u201chow things should be.\u201d\u00a0 Despite all of God\u2019s mercy toward him Jacob was most eloquent in his fear when he complained to his sons, You are making me childless!\u00a0 Joseph is gone.\u00a0 Simeon is gone.\u00a0 And now you want to take Benjamin! \u00a0Everything is against me<\/i>.33<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
