This is a continuation of my intent to become much more familiar with the Greek translation of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) and \u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u05d4\u0599<\/a><\/span> (y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) in the Septuagint. Genesis 2:4 marked the first occurrence of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a5\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) in the Masoretic text. Only the Elpenor version of the Septuagint seemed to corroborate<\/a> that first occurrence with the Greek word \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>. None<\/a> of the other occurrences thus far received any validation from the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here, it is the BLB Septuagint rather then the Elpenor which corroborated the Masoretic text’s \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a7\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) with \u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Primed by the graciousness of God’s word1<\/sup><\/a>\u2013He gives the gifts He deems appropriate to whomever He chooses to give them\u2013I can hear this as the graciousness of God. He did not leave <\/span>the man <\/i>(‘\u0101\u1e0f\u0101m<\/i>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd<\/a><\/span>) he had formed<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> naked and afraid<\/a> in the wild. He prepared a garden <\/i>or orchard<\/i> (Hebrew: gan<\/i>, \u05d2\u05df<\/a><\/span>; Greek: \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) for him in Eden <\/i>(\u02bf\u0113\u1e0fen<\/i>, \u05d1\u05e2\u05d3\u05df<\/a><\/span>), which means pleasure<\/i>.<\/p>\n

This occurrence of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a4\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) in the Masoretic text wasn’t corroborated by either version of the Septuagint. <\/span><\/p>\n

In another essay<\/a> I called Genesis 1:11, 12 an example of the authority of God’s word: \u201cHe spoke and the earth obeyed Him\u201d (Genesis 1:11, 12 NET) [See Table<\/a> below].<\/span><\/p>\n

God said, \u201cLet the land (<\/em>‘ere\u1e63, <\/em><\/span>\u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em>)<\/em> produce (<\/em>d\u0101\u0161\u0101’, <\/em><\/span>\u05ea\u05d3\u05e9\u05d0<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em>)<\/em> vegetation: plants yielding seeds and trees on the land bearing fruit with seed in it, according to their kinds.\u201d It was so. The land (<\/em>‘ere\u1e63, <\/em><\/span>\u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em>)<\/em> produced (<\/em>y\u0101\u1e63\u0101’, <\/em><\/span>\u05d5\u05ea\u05d5\u05e6\u05d0<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em>)<\/em> vegetation\u2014plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Was it seeds that the land <\/i><\/span>(‘ere\u1e63<\/i>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5<\/a><\/span>) produced <\/i>(y\u0101\u1e63\u0101’<\/i>, \u05d5\u05ea\u05d5\u05e6\u05d0<\/a><\/span>)? Or was it the land’s plans, ideas or designs that God saw<\/i>…was good<\/i>? The same Hebrew word \u05ea\u05d5\u05e6\u05d0<\/a><\/span> (y\u0101\u1e63\u0101’<\/i>) occurred in Genesis 1:24 (NET) [Table<\/a>]:<\/p>\n

God said, \u201cLet the land produce (<\/em>y\u0101\u1e63\u0101’, <\/em><\/span>\u05ea\u05d5\u05e6\u05d0<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em>)<\/em> living creatures according to their kinds: cattle, creeping things, and wild animals, each according to its kind.\u201d It was so.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Regarding the trees of Eden the land’s \u201cobedience\u201d was effected (not surprisingly any longer) by God who made all kinds of trees grow <\/i><\/span>(\u1e63\u0101ma\u1e25<\/i>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e6\u05de\u05d7<\/a><\/span>) from the soil <\/i>(‘\u0103\u1e0f\u0101m\u00e2<\/i>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4<\/a><\/span>). And this exercise keeps me aware that God’s word is not sometimes true and other times powerful, sometimes authoritative and others gracious. His word is all of the above all of the time. The patterns simply helped me recognize these various aspects of his word.<\/p>\n

I won’t comment much here on antediluvian geography, nor attempt to use tantalizing Hebrew words like \u05db\u05d5\u05e9<\/a><\/span> (k\u00fb\u0161<\/i>), \u05d7\u05d3\u05e7\u05dc<\/a><\/span> (\u1e25ideqel<\/i>), \u05d0\u05e9\u05d5\u05e8<\/a><\/span> (‘a\u0161\u0161\u00fbr<\/i>) or \u05e4\u05e8\u05ea<\/a><\/span> (p\u1d4ar\u0101\u1e6f<\/i>) to locate Eden on a modern map. I grew up in Missouri near the center of the North American continent. I’ve walked up a hill, stood on a road cut, looked down on the highway and out over the landscape, trying to imagine the bottom of a warm shallow sea.<\/p>\n

It was all in my imagination, a story to tell beginning Geology students on a field trip. A fresh look at the fossils at our feet revealed that these organisms probably didn’t live here, probably didn’t even die here. They were not bent and folded organisms crushed by the weight of sediments like so many fallen caryatids<\/a>. They were broken pieces, fairly well sorted according to size and density.<\/p>\n

If I imagine that the water carrying these pieces also had larger more dense pieces as well as smaller less dense pieces, I can imagine a relative measure of the flow of this water when these pieces fell out of suspension in this particular location. Though this particular imagination feels more sciency than my former imagination, it’s still just my imagination. I can’t pinpoint a place on a map upstream where larger more dense pieces of the same organisms fell out of suspension, or downstream where smaller pieces fell out. All I see are miles and miles of fossils of about this size embedded in a silt-sized limestone matrix.<\/p>\n

My point is that the four distributaries<\/a> described in Genesis 2:10-14 were planned and engineered by God. I’m more familiar post flood with river deltas, water following the path of least resistance as it flows downhill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here <\/span>\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a5\u05d4<\/a><\/span><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i><\/span>) was translated \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in both versions of the Septuagint. An article<\/a> I read while preparing this essay highlighted the Lord God’s graciousness to Adam, providing him with something meaningful to do in the garden, as it gave me an interesting contrast to what passes for human intelligence.<\/p>\n

Yuval Noah Harari, historian, futurist, and World Economic Forum (WEF) adviser, said, \u201cWe just don\u2019t need the vast majority of the population\u201d in the early 21st century given modern technologies\u2019 rendering human labor economically and militarily \u201credundant.\u201d3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mr. Harari explained:4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In the 20th century, what was common to all the stories \u2014 the liberal, the fascist, the communist \u2014 is that the big heroes of the story were the common people, not necessarily all people, but if you lived, say, in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, life was very grim, but when you looked at the propaganda posters on the walls that depicted the glorious future, you were there…<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Now, when people look at the posters on the walls, or listen to TED talks, they hear a lot of these…big ideas and big words about machine learning and genetic engineering and blockchain and globalization, and they are not there…\u2018The future doesn\u2019t need me. You have all these smart people in California and in New York and in Beijing, and they are planning this amazing future with artificial intelligence and bio-engineering and in global connectivity and whatnot, and they don\u2019t need me…’<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here, too, <\/span>\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a3\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) in the Masoretic text was corroborated by \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in both versions of the Septuagint. While there is every reason to believe that the Lord God’s command to Adam was every bit as true, powerful, authoritative and gracious as every other word He had spoken, I can hear it as arbitrary, capricious, deceitful even evil. That says far more about me and my evil desire than it does about the Lord God or his word. It seems important to highlight that the tree of life was not included in this prohibition.<\/p>\n
