The Hebrew word translated afflicted <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and oppressed <\/i>(NET) was \u05e2\u05b8\u05e0\u05b4\u0597\u05d9<\/a><\/span> (\u02bf\u0101n\u00ee<\/i>). It was translated \u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03c7\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03c7\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint, poor <\/i>in English. Blessed are the poor <\/i>(\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03c7\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03c7\u03cc\u03c2) in spirit<\/i>, Jesus said in the sermon on the mount, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The clause neither hath he hid his face from him <\/i>on Jesus’ lips or in his heart tends to invalidate a popular idea from my religious upbringing, \u201cthat as Jesus hung on the cross, bearing the sin of the world, His holy and pure Father looked away because He couldn\u2019t stand the sight of all that sin.\u201d2<\/sup><\/a> Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity<\/i>,3<\/sup><\/a> was the Scripture used to justify this idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

In context, however, in the English translation of the Masoretic text this was Habakkuk’s preface to an accusation that God not only looked at evil but did nothing about what He saw. The English translation of the Septuagint seems a bit less like an accusation, a little more like a question addressed to God about troubling things Habakkuk saw.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here the Hebrew word translated meek <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and oppressed <\/i>(NET) was \u05e2\u05b2\u05e0\u05b8\u05d5\u05b4\u05a8\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span><\/span> (\u02bf\u0101n\u0101v<\/i>). It was translated \u03c0\u1f73\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint, needy <\/i>(BLB) and poor<\/i> (Elpenor) in English. And God is able<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> to make all grace overflow to you<\/i>, Paul wrote, so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work. Just as it is written, \u201cHe has scattered widely, he has given to the poor <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f73\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2); his righteousness remains forever.\u201d<\/i>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
