For Moses<\/a> writes about the righteousness that is by the law<\/i>, Paul continued.\u00a0 \u201cThe one who does these things will live by them<\/i><\/b> [Table<\/a>]\u201d [Table<\/a>].\u00a0 But the righteousness that is by faith says:<\/i> \u201cDo not say in your heart<\/i><\/b> [Table<\/a>], \u2018Who will ascend into heaven?<\/i> [Table<\/a>]\u2019\u201d (that is, to bring Christ down) or \u201cWho will descend into the abyss<\/a>?<\/b><\/i> [Table<\/a>]\u201d (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)<\/i>. \u00a0But what does it say?<\/i> \u00a0\u201cThe word is near you<\/i><\/b>, in your mouth and in your heart<\/b><\/i> [Table<\/a>]\u201d (that is, the word of faith that we preach)<\/i>\u20261<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I have already gone into this in some detail elsewhere<\/a>, when it seemed appropriate to understand Paul\u2019s rhetorical question: If some did not believe, does their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God?<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here I will simply point out the recurring pattern.\u00a0 The righteousness that is by the law<\/i> is an external code of conduct forced upon the sinful flesh of Adam. \u00a0There are rewards for compliance, and threats of violence and death for noncompliance.\u00a0 The righteousness that is by faith<\/i> wells up from the Holy Spirit and communes intimately with the spirit born from above<\/a>, so intimately that this righteousness seems like that spirit\u2019s own idea and longing.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Paul continued, because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord<\/i>…3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 There is a note (10)<\/a> in the NET here: \u201cOr \u2018the Lord.\u2019\u00a0 The Greek construction, along with the quotation from Joel 2:32 in v. 13 (in which the same \u2018Lord\u2019 seems to be in view) suggests that \u03ba\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (kurion) is to be taken as \u2018the Lord,\u2019 that is, Yahweh…\u201d\u00a0 Jesus was quite clear on the subject, saying, I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am<\/a>!<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul continued, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved<\/i> (\u03c3\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What this salvation<\/i> is substantively is the righteousness that is by faith<\/i>, a righteousness that comes from God through his Holy Spirit.\u00a0 When Peter defended his actions with Cornelius, he said, He informed<\/a> us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying<\/a>, \u201cSend<\/a> to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter <\/i>[Table<\/a>], who will speak a message<\/i> (\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) to you by which you and your entire household will be saved<\/i> (\u03c3\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).\u201d \u00a0Then as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he did on us at the beginning. \u00a0And I remembered the word<\/i> (\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of the<\/a> Lord, as he used to say, \u201cJohn baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit\u201d<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a> [Table<\/a>].<\/p>\n

For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness<\/i>, Paul continued, and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This translation is a little confusing.\u00a0 It sounds like one possesses two different things by two different means:\u00a0 1) my heart believes and thus has righteousness and 2) my mouth confesses and thus has salvation.\u00a0 But the Greek word<\/a> \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/a> (to have<\/i>, to hold<\/i>) is not found in the text.\u00a0 The actual word is \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> (into<\/i>, unto<\/i>): For with the heart one believes unto<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a>) righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a>) salvation<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I did not believe once upon a time and thus possess righteousness.\u00a0 I did not confess once upon a time and thus possess salvation.\u00a0 I believe and confess daily that I am utterly dependent on Christ\u2019s righteousness and faithfulness.\u00a0 Give us today our daily bread<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> of this new life, the fruit of your Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control.\u00a0 Against such things there is no law<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a> [Table<\/a>].\u00a0 What is our belief and confession (Titus 3:3-6 NET)?<\/p>\n

For we too were once foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved to various passions and desires, spending our lives in evil and envy, hateful and hating one another.\u00a0 But \u201cwhen the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, he saved (\u1f14\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> us not by works of righteousness that<\/a> we have done but on the basis of his mercy<\/a>, through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, whom he poured out on us in full measure through Jesus Christ our Savior.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cAnd so, since we have been justified by his grace<\/i>, since we are experiencing this salvation, this righteousness by faith (through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit<\/i>),11<\/sup><\/a> we become<\/a> heirs with the confident expectation of eternal life.\u201d<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Now having written that \u201cwe are experiencing this salvation, this righteousness by faith,\u201d I certainly don\u2019t mean that \u201cour experience\u201d is a 100% accurate translation of Christ\u2019s righteousness.\u00a0 When it came to his bout with coveting Paul wrote, For I want <\/i>(\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) to do the good, but I cannot<\/a> do it<\/i> [Table<\/a>] (literally, For to wish is present in\/with me, but not to do it<\/i>).13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Still, he recognized that this desire was from God and not from himself or his own righteousness by the law, for the one bringing forth in you both the desire<\/i> (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) and the effort \u2013 for the sake of his good pleasure \u2013 is God<\/a><\/i>.14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For the scripture says<\/i>, Paul continued in Romans, \u201cEveryone<\/i> who believes in him will not be put to shame<\/i><\/b>.\u201d \u00a0For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. \u00a0For<\/i> everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved<\/i><\/b> (\u03c3\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03ce\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
