It is misleading if the reader assumes that choice is to be made by the puny power of my rational mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By the time I can stare down my Christianity and say, <i>Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> the initial choice has already been made. [F]<i>or it is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn39\">God<\/a> who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> is how Paul described it. Led by the Holy Spirit, continuously bathed from the inside out in <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+17:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus\u2019<\/a> own love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, the choice to trust Him becomes a relatively simple matter of not resisting Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That the initial choice was made in a non-rational way, however, doesn&#8217;t make that choice itself irrational. There are good reasons for making that choice. In real time, however, those reasons have come more like rationalizations after the choice was made rather than preceding and causing the choice. Those reasons do help, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/#_faith\">to sustain<\/a> that choice on a day-to-day basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said. <i>I will draw <\/i>is not particularly tricky. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elk.html#elkusw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u03cd\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elk.html#elkuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in Greek, a first person indicative verb in the future tense. \u201cThe indicative mood is a statement of fact or an actual occurrence from the writer&#8217;s or speaker&#8217;s perspective.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> In other words, as Jesus says this He believes that He will draw all to Himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_rational\"><\/a>This is quite powerful as reasons go. Any rational argument against it must explain: 1) how Jesus was wrong and 2) when He changed his mind. My religious mind might imagine any number of scenarios from its own experiences and feelings, but for the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+2:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mind of Christ<\/a> <\/i>this is a very high bar, practically insurmountable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_fail\"><\/a>If Jesus were to ask me, \u201cWhy did you believe that I would draw all to myself?\u201d my <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+14:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">account<\/a> is simple and direct: That is what you said. If He asked why I believed that He would fail to draw all to Himself, things become more complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I believed that Jesus would fail to draw all to Himself, I didn\u2019t put it in those words. At that time I didn\u2019t think about giving an account to Jesus but if I had it would have gone something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I didn\u2019t believe that you would fail. I believed that you would do everything in your power but salvation depends ultimately on the individual believer. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus\u2019 next question is obvious: \u201c<i>Why did you believe that All authority in heaven and on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn25\">earth<\/a> has <\/i>[not] <i>been given to me\u201d?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was the authority on which Jesus\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+28:19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">command<\/a> to disciple all nations is based. And his saying that <i>No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> refutes the idea that people choose Christ apart from being drawn by God. The people-must-save-themselves-through-their-own-faith version of Christianity is weakened by the flesh much like the law. It is not what <i>God has done<\/i>\u2026<i>By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_understanding\"><\/a>If I take Jesus at his word and assume that He draws all to Himself before anyone is sent <i>into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u2026and that is an assumption. I don\u2019t see any way to limit Jesus to this moment but I\u2019m intrigued by the possibilities of this moment\u2026then I can believe that all gathered before his glorious throne have been drawn to Him and like Paul [they themselves] <i>serve the law of God with <\/i>[their minds] <i>but with <\/i>[their] <i>flesh <\/i>[they] s<i>erve the law of sin<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_cursed\"><\/a>So from where do the cursed come? Who are those to whom Jesus says, <i>Depart from me<\/i>\u2026<i>into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>? [H]<i>e <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote28sym\">will separate<\/a> people <\/i>(literally: <i>themselves<\/i>) <i>one from another<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> must be very different than I imagined when I imagined that the righteous and the wicked were <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/09\/christianity-part-1\/#_different\">different<\/a>, already separate, people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> was a compromise Paul also described with the words: <i>when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/04\/29\/the-book-of-life-part-1\/#sdfootnote14sym\">to<\/a> the law of sin that dwells in my members <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/04\/29\/the-book-of-life-part-1\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<i>. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin<\/i> was acceptable to Paul as a\u00a0compromise in the hope that God would deliver him through Jesus Christ: <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn13\">Thanks be<\/a> to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If those standing before Jesus\u2019 glorious throne are about to experience that deliverance, I get a different image of <i>that day when, according to <\/i>[Paul\u2019s] gospel (i.e., <i>good news<\/i>), <i>God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The cursed standing to Jesus\u2019 left are not like the evil (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pon.html#ponhroi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03af<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pon.html#ponhros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>). <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>You brood of vipers! <\/i>Jesus said to religious leaders. <i>How can you speak good, when you are evil <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03af)?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After I got over thinking that Jesus was simply rude and abusive, I bypassed thinking He was ignorant seeking information, but I rested for a while on the idea that He was constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+2:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perplexed<\/a> by human nature. Now, however, I assume He asked a legitimate question, inviting the Pharisees to think deeply about how they spoke anything good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I relate to that from my own experience with <i>None is righteous<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> The moment I accepted that premise as true, my arguments against it became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/prima%20facie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prima facie<\/a> evidence that Jesus was in fact drawing me to Himself. If <i>no one seeks for God<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> is true, and I was seeking for God, then the source of my seeking was something other than my unrighteousness self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus said (Matthew 7:9-11 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Or which one of you, if his son asks<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he asks<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/em> for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil <em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03af)<\/em>, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It fits then that the cursed standing on Jesus\u2019 left are the distilled sin condemned in the human flesh of those on his right. This distilled sin condemned in human flesh never gave food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, welcome to a stranger, clothing to the naked, nor the time of day to those who were sick or in prison, things the evil (\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03af) do often for people they care about. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As this distilled sin condemned in human flesh stares at the glorified Christ, looking much like when He <i>was transfigured before <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+17:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter, James and John<\/a>], <i>his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><i> white as light<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> I can almost hear them sneer, <i>when did we see you<\/i>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Peter said to Jesus <\/i>[at Jesus\u2019 transfiguration], <i>\u201cRabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a><i> and one for Elijah.\u201d For he did not know what to say,<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a><i> for they were<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><i> terrified<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a> The righteous on Jesus\u2019 right don\u2019t seem terrified necessarily, just disoriented. None seems to recall this moment from Scripture. They, too, question when they have ever done anything for anyone like their glorified Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_goats\"><\/a><i>My sheep <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn36\">hear<\/a> my voice<\/i>, Jesus said, <i>and I know them, and they follow me <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_Table21\">Table<\/a>]<i>. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> Though I called the cursed, \u201cthe distilled sin condemned in\u2026human flesh,\u201d it seems more likely that it is the righteous led by the Holy Spirit who heed his command to <i>go<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote30sym\" name=\"sdfootnote30anc\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a><i> out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_Christians\"><\/a>In his sermon on the mount Jesus said (Matthew 7:21-23 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cNot everyone who says to me, \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#sdfootnote32sym\" name=\"sdfootnote32anc\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a><\/em> On that day many will say to me, \u2018Lord, Lord, did we not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\">prophesy<\/a> in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?\u2019 <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#_Table32\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> And then will I declare to them, \u2018I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_sin\"><\/a>Now I would understand these <i>many <\/i>as the distilled sin condemned in the flesh of Christians standing on Jesus&#8217; left. This is not to say that there is no corresponding <i>many <\/i>who heard his command to <i>go out from their midst, and be separate from them <\/i>standing on Jesus&#8217; right, just that in this passage we are hearing the arguments of the distilled sin that was condemned in their flesh. It boasts in the work of God as if it were its own. It supposes that it should be rewarded along with the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Corinthians+5:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new creation<\/a><\/i> it plagued for a lifetime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the wonderful possibilities of this moment is that I won&#8217;t see my doppelganger. The glorified Lord separates us one from the other, like trying to see something on the other side of the sun. But it is sobering to consider: Who will <i>I <\/i>be at that moment? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Will <i>I myself <\/i>be the <i>righteous new creation <\/i>on Jesus&#8217; right, marveling at my glorious Lord, wondering what I ever could have done for Him?
