And <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn2\">he<\/a> answered them, \u201cDo you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all <em>(\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pas.html#pas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> the other Galileans, because they suffered in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn3\">this way<\/a>? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2)<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn4\">likewise<\/a> perish. Or those <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn5\">eighteen<\/a> on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn6\">they<\/a> were worse offenders than all <em>(\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2)<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn7\">the<\/a> others who lived <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn8\">in<\/a> Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all <em>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2)<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_ftn9\">likewise<\/a> perish\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/07\/25\/psalm-22-part-3\/#_Table21\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first occurrence of \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 was limited by <i>the other Galileans<\/i>. The next was limited by <i>the others who lived in Jerusalem <\/i>at the time that <i>the tower in Siloam fell<\/i>. Both occurrences of \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 were limited by <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#ean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> (<em>unless<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanohte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (<em>you repent<\/em>). These are four examples of how Jesus&#8217; used two forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pas.html#pas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a> (\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 and \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2) when He intended to limit them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ll take a few moments to consider whether the necessity of repentance raises any objection to Jesus&#8217; promise: <i>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pas.html#pas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>) <i>to myself<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <i>I have not come to call the righteous<\/i>, Jesus said, <i>but sinners to repentance <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> This is one way Jesus understood his mission to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/12\/20\/christianity-part-4\/#_save\">save the world<\/a>. After his resurrection He reiterated this aspect of his mission (Luke 24:44-47 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cThese are <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote1sym\">my<\/a> words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote2sym\">Moses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote3sym\">the<\/a> Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, \u201cThus it is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote4sym\">written<\/a>, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance <em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>nations, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote5sym\">beginning<\/a> from Jerusalem\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Peter and the apostles<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> also proclaimed this message about Jesus&#8217; mission when questioned by the high priest (Acts 5:30, 31 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn7\">to give<\/a> <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#dounai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/did.html#didwmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> repentance <em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> to Israel and forgiveness of sins <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When <i>the circumcision party <\/i>[in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote35sym\">Jerusalem<\/a><\/i>] <i>criticized <\/i>[Peter], <i>saying <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>], <i>\u201cYou went to uncircumcised men and ate with them,\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> Peter explained (Acts 11:15-18 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote40sym\">the<\/a> Lord, how he said, \u2018John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.\u2019 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote41sym\">I<\/a> that I could stand in God&#8217;s way?\u201d When they heard these things they fell silent. And they <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote42sym\">glorified<\/a> God, saying, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote43sym\">Then<\/a> to the Gentiles also God has granted <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ed.html#edwke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> repentance <em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd. a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> that leads to life\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul instructed Timothy (2 Timothy 2:22-26 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord&#8217;s servant must not be quarrelsome but<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/em> kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/em> God may perhaps grant<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_oppose\"><\/a>Translating <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/antid.html#antidiatiqemenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> <i>his opponents <\/i>(ESV) or <i>opponents <\/i>(NET) misses a beautiful nuance the translators of the KJV captured better with <i>those that oppose themselves<\/i>. The Greek word \u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 is a participle of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/antid.html#antidiatiqhmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> in the middle\/passive voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Greek middle voice shows the subject acting in his own interest or on his own behalf, or participating in the results of the verbal action. In overly simplistic terms, sometimes the middle form of the verb could be translated as &#8220;the performer of the action actually acting upon himself&#8221; (reflexive action).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/antid.html#antidiatiqemenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> may \u201cbe opposed\u201d to Timothy&#8217;s teaching about Jesus Christ, to be <i>opponents <\/i>or <i>his opponents <\/i>should probably be reserved for the active voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Grammatical voice indicates whether the subject is the performer of the action of the verb (active voice), or the subject is the recipient of the action (passive voice). If the subject of the sentence is executing the action, then the verb is referred to as being in the active voice.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_goads\"><\/a>Here is the beautiful part: <i>Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> When Paul recounted Saul&#8217;s encounter with the resurrected, ascended and glorified Christ, he quoted Jesus&#8217; words: <i>Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> The ESV translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sk.html#sklhron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f79\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#soi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, <i>It is hard for you<\/i>, is virtually identical to the KJV, <i>it is hard for thee<\/i>. It is hard for us, good church folk, not to hear Jesus&#8217; judge Saul for harming other good church folk. But <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#soi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> is in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#DATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dative case<\/a>, so \u201chard to you\u201d is probably the most literal translation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The translators of NET caught the flavor of Paul&#8217;s recollection of Jesus&#8217; words <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sk.html#sklhron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f79\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#soi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> better: <i>You are hurting yourself<\/i>. Jesus knows the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+28:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relentless power<\/a> of drawing all to Himself. He would never encourage anyone to hold out for a personal appearance. That&#8217;s not the point of the story. Rather, pay more attention to the goads as they happen. And by all means, don&#8217;t avoid the Bible or Bible teaching, especially when you know that the goads come more frequently then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At any rate, it makes sense to me that Paul, born anew (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anw.html#anwqen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) from Saul&#8217;s encounter with the glorified Christ, wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/antid.html#antidiatiqemenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> to Timothy, and understood these words as, <i>those that oppose themselves<\/i>. The most literal understanding I can arrive at is: \u201cLord, if few the saved.\u201d Since Jesus&#8217; answer included not only <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f77<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>) but <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#iscusousi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#iscuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>), it seems remotely possible the question was whether the saved were <em>puny<\/em> or <em>weak<\/em>. But that doesn&#8217;t mitigate the fear engendered by this answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_current\"><\/a>The participle <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sw.html#swzomenoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1ff3\u03b6\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> used as an adjective here might alleviate some of that fear, however, since it is in the present tense. If this were a divine command, I would probably take the present tense in a now and forever sort of way. The <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Luke+13:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NET parallel Greek<\/a> text and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academic-bible.com\/en\/online-bibles\/novum-testamentum-graece-na-28\/read-the-bible-text\/bibel\/text\/lesen\/stelle\/52\/130001\/139999\/ch\/36dab539bfeaa4498e21424192cc882d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NA<sup>28<\/sup><\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qu.html#quras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (another form of \u03b8\u03cd\u03c1\u03b1) for the <i>narrow door <\/i>through which Jesus commanded these people to enter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_NA27\"><\/a>So, when I consider that <i>the master of the house <\/i>rises to shut this <i>narrow door <\/i>at some point in time, I should also be mindful of the possibility that Jesus had a different door in mind. The NA<sup>27<\/sup> is essentially equivalent<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> to the NET parallel Greek text. In 2 Timothy 2:24 (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/02\/christianity-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\">footnote 8<\/a>), for instance, the word <i>but<\/i> was \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70 in the NET parallel Greek text (NA<sup>27<\/sup>) and \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u2019 in NA<sup>28<\/sup>, the Stephanus Textus Receptus and Byzantine Majority Text. That means to me that the editors of NA<sup>27<\/sup> agreed that \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70 was more original. Later, in NA<sup>28<\/sup> the editors reverted back to \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u2019 in agreement once again with most of the received texts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The difference between \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70 and \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u2019 is insignificant. Both translate <i>but<\/i>. The difference between <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qu.html#quran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pu.html#pulhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c5\u03bb\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> might be significant and might not. Could Jesus use two different words that mean <i>door <\/i>to refer to the same door? Sure. If He used two different words could He have meant two different doors? Sure. The agreement of the texts of NA<sup>27<\/sup> and NA<sup>28<\/sup> means that two groups of editors agreed that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qu.html#quras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> was more original for the narrow <em>door<\/em>, and that Jesus used the same root word (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qu.html#qura\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03cd\u03c1\u03b1<\/a>) for the shut <i>door<\/i>. But that doesn&#8217;t say anything about what the editors of NA<sup>29<\/sup> might decide. So, I try to keep an open mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ll pick this up in another essay.
