The grain Joseph\u2019s brothers brought back from Egypt didn\u2019t outlast the famine.\u00a0 \u201cReturn, buy us a little more food,\u201d<\/i> their father said. \u00a0But Judah said to him, \u201cThe man solemnly warned us, \u2018You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.\u2019 \u00a0If you send our brother <\/i>[Joseph\u2019s younger brother Benjamin] with us, we\u2019ll go down and buy food for you. \u00a0But if you will not send him, we won\u2019t go down there because the man said to us, \u2018You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.\u2019\u201d<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

At first Jacob (also called Israel by God) remained reluctant.\u00a0 When Judah reminded him how the Egyptian [their brother Joseph<\/a>] had questioned them, and promised to be surety for Benjamin, their father Israel said to them, \u201cIf it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and take a gift down to the man \u2013 a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds. \u00a0Take double the money with you; you must take back the money that was returned in the mouths of your sacks \u2013 perhaps it was an oversight.\u201d<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This reminds me of the strategy Jacob employed when he returned home and met his estranged brother Esau<\/a>.3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But Israel continued, \u201c<\/i>Take your brother too, and go right away to the man. \u00a0May the sovereign God grant you mercy before the man so that he may release your other brother and Benjamin! \u00a0As for me, if I lose my children I lose them.\u201d<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>You are making me childless!\u00a0 <\/i>Jacob had complained to his sons<\/a>.\u00a0 Joseph is gone.\u00a0 Simeon is gone.\u00a0 And now you want to take Benjamin! \u00a0Everything is against me<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Israel was willing to trust the sovereign God with the outcome.\u00a0 Yes, they are the same man, but it reminds me of those born of the flesh of Adam and born from above<\/a> of the Spirit of God.\u00a0 For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh<\/i>, Paul wrote the Galatians, for<\/a> these are in opposition<\/a> to each other, so that you cannot do what<\/a> you want<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Joseph\u2019s brothers returned with Benjamin to Egypt.\u00a0 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the servant who was over his household, \u201cBring the men to the house. \u00a0Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for the men will eat with me at noon.\u201d \u00a0The man did just as Joseph said; he brought the men into Joseph\u2019s house<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Joseph invited his brothers to a meal, but the men were afraid<\/i> (y\u0101r\u0113’<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>) when they were brought to Joseph\u2019s house.\u00a0 They said, \u201cWe are being brought in because of the money that was returned in our sacks last time.\u00a0 He wants to capture us, make us slaves, and take our donkeys!\u201d<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0As far as I can tell the rabbis who translated the Septuagint left this particular fear<\/i> out of their Greek translation.<\/p>\n

Joseph\u2019s brothers approached the man who was in charge of Joseph\u2019s household and spoke to him at the entrance to the house<\/i>. \u00a0They said, \u201cMy lord, we did indeed come down the first time to buy food. \u00a0But when we came to the place where we spent the night, we opened our sacks and each of us found his money \u2013 the full amount \u2013 in the mouth of his sack. \u00a0So we have returned it. \u00a0We have brought additional money with us to buy food. \u00a0We do not know who put the money in our sacks!\u201d<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u201cEverything is fine,\u201d the man in charge of Joseph\u2019s household told them.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u0597\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>).\u00a0 Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks.\u00a0 I had your money.\u201d\u00a0 Then he brought Simeon out to them<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In Greek in the Septuagint<\/a> afraid<\/i> was \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 Do not be afraid<\/a><\/i> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>) of those who kill<\/a> the body but cannot kill the soul<\/i>, Jesus told his disciples.\u00a0 Instead, fear<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>) the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell<\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus was sending them to their deaths.\u00a0 That sounds ominous, but Jesus is sending all of us to our deaths whether we believe Him or not.\u00a0 One may die a martyr serving the Savior, another may choke out his last breath from advanced emphysema or heart failure or a brain tumor, but (with the possible exception of those alive and trusting Christ at the time of His return) we are all going to die, or sleep<\/i> as the New Testament writers seemed to prefer to call it.<\/p>\n

The one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell<\/i> is either God the Father, or the Lord Jesus Himself if I take his teaching literally:\u00a0 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does, and will show him greater deeds than these, so that you will be amazed. \u00a0For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes. \u00a0Furthermore, the Father does not judge anyone, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all people will honor<\/a> the Son just as they honor<\/a> the Father. \u00a0The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him <\/i>[Table<\/a>].13<\/sup><\/a> All authority in heaven and on earth<\/a> has been given to me<\/i> [Table<\/a>], Jesus said. \u00a0Therefore<\/a> go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit <\/i>[Table<\/a>], teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.\u00a0 And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age<\/a><\/i> [Table<\/a>].14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So Matthew 10:28 contains a New Testament occurrence of the fear of the Lord<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a no-win scenario for Bible translators.\u00a0 The first part of Jesus\u2019 statement is fairly clear:\u00a0 Do not be afraid<\/i> of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul<\/i>.\u00a0 Jesus doesn\u2019t want his followers to be terrified into fleeing from, or struck with fear by, those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul<\/i>.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t want that fear to stop one from believing or even professing faith in Him.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Still there are other definitions of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5 listed in the NET online Bible<\/a>.\u00a0 There may be plenty of good reason to be \u201cstartled by strange sights or occurrences,\u201d \u201cstruck with amazement,\u201d even \u201cto fear\u201d or \u201cbe afraid of one\u201d posing some irrational threat of violence.\u00a0 It is wise at times \u201cto fear (i.e. hesitate) to do something (for fear of harm).\u201d\u00a0 It is necessary for conscience\u2019 sake \u201cto reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience\u201d those in authority, even those who would kill the body for professing faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 And the negation in this quotation is \u03bc\u1f74<\/a>, the qualified as opposed to the absolute negation according to Strong\u2019s Concordance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead, fear<\/i> the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell<\/i>,15<\/sup><\/a> Jesus continued.\u00a0 It is fairly obvious that Jesus was not telling his disciples to flee in terror from Him, but to \u201creverence, venerate, to treat [Him] with deference or reverential obedience.\u201d\u00a0 Of course if the translators had translated \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5 reverence<\/i> here, I might have complained that they were obscuring the fact that both words were \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5.\u00a0 Jesus made his point perfectly clear as He continued, Aren\u2019t two sparrows sold for a penny? \u00a0Yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father\u2019s will. \u00a0Even all the hairs on your head are numbered. \u00a0So do not be afraid<\/i>16<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5); you are more valuable than many sparrows<\/i>.17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And again, the negation is \u03bc\u1f74<\/a>, the qualified as opposed to the absolute negation so as not to conflict with the command to fear<\/i> or reverence<\/i> Him.<\/p>\n

Up to this point in the story Joseph\u2019s brothers feared God\u2019s punishment<\/a>:\u00a0 Surely we\u2019re being punished because of our brother<\/i>, they had said to one another, because we saw how distressed he was when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen.\u00a0 That is why this distress has come on us!<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I think something changed in them after everything they\u2019d been through, when Joseph\u2019s steward said:\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid<\/i>.\u00a0 Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks.<\/i>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So that day they ate and drank with Joseph until they all became drunk<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Joseph still didn\u2019t reveal his identity.\u00a0 In fact, he tormented them again.\u00a0 He had his servant return all their money in their sacks, and hide the cup he used for divination in Benjamin\u2019s sack.\u00a0 They had not gone very far from the city when Joseph said to the servant who was over his household, \u201cPursue the men at once! \u00a0When you overtake them, say to them, \u2018Why have you repaid good with evil?\u2019\u201d<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This time, however, the brothers were indignant rather than fearful.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy does my lord say such things?\u00a0 Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! \u00a0Look, the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan.\u00a0 Why then would we steal silver or gold from your master\u2019s house? \u00a0If one of us has it, he will die, and the rest of us will become my lord\u2019s slaves!\u201d<\/i>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have suggested your own punishment!\u201d<\/i> Joseph\u2019s servant replied. \u00a0\u201cThe one who has it will become my slave, but the rest of you will go free.\u201d<\/i>23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This, I think, is the tipoff to Joseph\u2019s plan.\u00a0 His servant knew Joseph wanted Benjamin alive even though he had no suspicion why.\u00a0 Joseph, after seeing Benjamin, had to leave the room again, for he was overcome by affection for his brother and was at the point of tears<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Joseph knew the famine would continue, for five more years there will be neither plowing nor harvesting<\/i>,25<\/sup><\/a> he said.\u00a0 By arresting Benjamin Joseph could both spend time with him and guarantee his brothers\u2019 return for more grain.\u00a0 But his brothers upended his scheme.<\/p>\n

When Joseph\u2019s servant found the divination cup exactly where he had placed it in Benjamin\u2019s sack, his brothers did not abandon their younger sibling to his fate.\u00a0 They all tore their clothes!<\/i>\u00a0 [a sign of mourning or repentance]\u00a0 Then each man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city<\/i>.26<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
