I first entertained the idea that \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a> in the New Testament might be defined by Leviticus 20:11-21 because of the similarity in word order between Matthew 15:19 (NET) and the Law in Exodus 20:2-17 (NET)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If I allowed that evil ideas<\/em> covered idolatrous worship of other gods, taking the Lord\u2019s name in vain, not keeping the Sabbath and not honoring father and mother, then only sexual immorality (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1) [See Addendum<\/a> below] and slander (\u03b2\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03af\u03b1) lacked a direct correspondent in the law.\u00a0 Leviticus 20:11-21 (NET) seemed to fill in that gap for \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Leviticus 20:11-21 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The advantage of this interpretation is that Leviticus 20:11-21 is a finite list as opposed to the open-ended translation of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 as immorality<\/em>.\u00a0 It does not pander to men who want to divorce their wives, remarry, and justify themselves by law<\/a>.\u00a0 And it is not without precedent in Bible translation.\u00a0 The translators of the New American Bible1<\/sup><\/a> understood \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 this way in Matthew 5:32<\/a>, 19:9<\/a>; Acts 15:20, 29<\/a>, and 21:25<\/a>.\u00a0 The disadvantages will follow.<\/p>\n

\nI thought \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> was a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>, but according to the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online it is a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>: \u201cbrothel, a house of prostitution.\u201d\u00a0 There is only one occurrence of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1\u03b9 in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
