this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem, and here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison all who call on<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikaloumenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a <b><i>everyone who calls <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikaleshtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikalew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <b><i>on the name of the Lord will be saved<\/i><\/b>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued in Romans, quoting the same verse from the prophet <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Joel+2:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel<\/a> that Peter quoted in his <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/\">first sermon<\/a> on Pentecost.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he asked a series of rhetorical questions:\u00a0 <i>How are they to call on<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikaleswntai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03c9\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikalew\" back into temporal order: 1) The Lord sent Apostles to preach.\u00a0 2) The Apostles preached to those who heard.\u00a0 3) Those who heard believed.\u00a0 4) Those who believed called on the name of the Lord.\u00a0 5) [E]<b><i>veryone who calls <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikaleshtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epik.html#epikalew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <b><i>on the name of the Lord will be saved<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Then Paul capped off this section with what has always sounded to me like a eulogy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Romans-10-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apostles\u2019 feet<\/a>, but the NET translators cracked the idiom and present it as a eulogy of God\u2019s timing: <b><i>How timely is the arrival of those who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/01\/13\/exploration-part-6\/#sdfootnote23sym\">proclaim<\/a> the good news<\/i><\/b>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0But I think to really grasp what Paul was wrestling with I have to add another step, his assumption that 6) <i>all Israel will be saved, as it is written<\/i>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>But not all have obeyed<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkousan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakouw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <i>the good news<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To translate <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkousan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> <i>obeyed<\/i> here, disrupts the obvious flow of Paul\u2019s thought.\u00a0 Paul referred back to step 3) above, <i>And how are they to believe<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuswsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <i>in one they have not heard of<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hk.html#hkousan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ako.html#akouw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)? \u00a0Here are the possible definitions of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkousan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> in the NET online Bible: \u201c1) to listen, to harken 1a) of one who on the knock at the door comes to listen who it is, (the duty of a porter) 2) to harken to a command 2a) to obey, be obedient to, submit to.\u201d\u00a0 I think Paul deliberately equated <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkousan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hk.html#hkousan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 <i>But not all have <\/i>[listened to] <i>the good news, for Isaiah says,<\/i> \u201c<b><i>Lord<\/i><\/b><i>, <b>who has believed <\/b><\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epist.html#episteuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <b><i>our report <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ako.html#akoh2\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/rh.html#rhmatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/rh.html#rhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <i>of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/10\/14\/atonement-part-9\/#_ftn21\">Christ<\/a><\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I deliberately left out the word <i>preached<\/i> (<i>preached word of Christ<\/i>) because as I said <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/20\/romans-part-13\/\">elsewhere<\/a> I believe that Paul meant something like what is heard comes through the word (or, <i>utterance<\/i>) of Christ (or, <i>God<\/i>).\u00a0 The note <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Romans+10:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(21)<\/a> in the NET reads: \u201cThe genitive could be understood as either subjective (\u2018Christ does the speaking\u2019) or objective (\u2018Christ is spoken about\u2019), but the latter is more likely here.\u201d\u00a0 And I am contending, more likely to whom? to Paul?<\/p>\n<p>Two men heard the same Gospel preached by the same Apostle.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> believed. \u00a0The Pharisee did not.\u00a0 It is common to assume that the difference was something intrinsic to the believer, some wisdom, some virtue.\u00a0 After all we call the believer <i>good<\/i> and the unbeliever <i>evil<\/i>.\u00a0 The <i>good<\/i> believe and are saved.\u00a0 The <i>evil<\/i> do not believe and are not saved.\u00a0 But Paul knew that he was not looking for Christ when he was arrested on the road to Damascus.\u00a0 Christ\u2019s salvation was what happened to him while he was busy making other plans.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think Paul was looking to the human individual for a reason why some believe and some do not, but to God.\u00a0 I think Paul wrote that <i>faith<\/i> <i>comes from what is heard<\/i>, the Gospel he preached, <i>and what is heard comes through the\u2026word of Christ<\/i>, that is Christ (or God) saying something like, \u201chear\u2026now.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps this becomes clearer in the negative in the next chapter when Paul wrote about <i>a remnant chosen by grace<\/i>:<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/17\/romans-part-39\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>The rest were hardened, as it is written,<\/i> <b><i>\u201cGod gave them a spirit of stupor<\/i><\/b><i>, <b>eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear<\/b>, <b>to this very day.\u201d<\/b><\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
