Paul wrote that the Lord richly blesses all who call<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) on him<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When he was sent by the Lord to Paul (then called Saul) Ananias said, Lord, I have heard<\/a> from many people about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem, and here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison all who call on<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) your name!<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As <\/i>Paul [Saul] began to proclaim Jesus<\/a> in the synagogues, saying, \u201cThis man is the Son of God<\/a><\/i> (\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>).\u201d<\/i> \u00a0All who heard him were amazed and were saying, \u201cIs this not the man who in<\/a> Jerusalem was ravaging those who call on<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) this name, and who had come<\/a> here to bring them as prisoners to the chief priests?\u201d<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For everyone who calls <\/i><\/b>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) on the name of the Lord will be saved<\/i><\/b>,4<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued in Romans, quoting the same verse from the prophet Joel<\/a> that Peter quoted in his first sermon<\/a> on Pentecost.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he asked a series of rhetorical questions:\u00a0 How are they to call on<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03c9\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) one they have not believed in<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)? \u00a0And how are they to believe<\/a><\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in one they have not heard of<\/i> (\u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)? \u00a0And how are they to hear<\/a><\/i> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) without someone preaching<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) to them?<\/i> \u00a0And how are they to preach<\/a><\/i> (\u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03be\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) unless they are sent<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>)?<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>To put this back into temporal order: 1) The Lord sent Apostles to preach.\u00a0 2) The Apostles preached to those who heard.\u00a0 3) Those who heard believed.\u00a0 4) Those who believed called on the name of the Lord.\u00a0 5) [E]veryone who calls <\/i><\/b>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) on the name of the Lord will be saved<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Then Paul capped off this section with what has always sounded to me like a eulogy of the Apostles\u2019 feet<\/a>, but the NET translators cracked the idiom and present it as a eulogy of God\u2019s timing: How timely is the arrival of those who proclaim<\/a> the good news<\/i><\/b>.7<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0But I think to really grasp what Paul was wrestling with I have to add another step, his assumption that 6) all Israel will be saved, as it is written<\/i>\u20268<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But not all have obeyed<\/i> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) the good news<\/i>,9<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To translate \u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> obeyed<\/i> here, disrupts the obvious flow of Paul\u2019s thought.\u00a0 Paul referred back to step 3) above, And how are they to believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in one they have not heard of<\/i> (\u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)? \u00a0Here are the possible definitions of \u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> in the NET online Bible: \u201c1) to listen, to harken 1a) of one who on the knock at the door comes to listen who it is, (the duty of a porter) 2) to harken to a command 2a) to obey, be obedient to, submit to.\u201d\u00a0 I think Paul deliberately equated \u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> with \u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 But not all have <\/i>[listened to] the good news, for Isaiah says,<\/i> \u201cLord<\/i><\/b>, who has believed <\/b><\/i>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) our report <\/i><\/b>(\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc7<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>)?\u201d<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Consequently faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) comes from what is heard<\/i> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74<\/a>), Paul continued, and what is heard <\/i>(\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74<\/a>) comes through the\u2026word <\/i>(\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of Christ<\/a><\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I deliberately left out the word preached<\/i> (preached word of Christ<\/i>) because as I said elsewhere<\/a> I believe that Paul meant something like what is heard comes through the word (or, utterance<\/i>) of Christ (or, God<\/i>).\u00a0 The note (21)<\/a> in the NET reads: \u201cThe genitive could be understood as either subjective (\u2018Christ does the speaking\u2019) or objective (\u2018Christ is spoken about\u2019), but the latter is more likely here.\u201d\u00a0 And I am contending, more likely to whom? to Paul?<\/p>\n

Two men heard the same Gospel preached by the same Apostle.\u00a0 The \u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> believed. \u00a0The Pharisee did not.\u00a0 It is common to assume that the difference was something intrinsic to the believer, some wisdom, some virtue.\u00a0 After all we call the believer good<\/i> and the unbeliever evil<\/i>.\u00a0 The good<\/i> believe and are saved.\u00a0 The evil<\/i> do not believe and are not saved.\u00a0 But Paul knew that he was not looking for Christ when he was arrested on the road to Damascus.\u00a0 Christ\u2019s salvation was what happened to him while he was busy making other plans.12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think Paul was looking to the human individual for a reason why some believe and some do not, but to God.\u00a0 I think Paul wrote that faith<\/i> comes from what is heard<\/i>, the Gospel he preached, and what is heard comes through the\u2026word of Christ<\/i>, that is Christ (or God) saying something like, \u201chear\u2026now.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps this becomes clearer in the negative in the next chapter when Paul wrote about a remnant chosen by grace<\/i>:13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rest were hardened, as it is written,<\/i> \u201cGod gave them a spirit of stupor<\/i><\/b>, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear<\/b>, to this very day.\u201d<\/b><\/i>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The first thing that came to my mind when I began to hear Paul that way was, \u201cWhy does <\/i>[God] still find fault?\u00a0 For who has ever resisted his will?\u201d<\/i>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Of course, Paul already knew my objection and countered it in the previous chapter<\/a> (Romans 9:20-23 NET):<\/p>\n

But who indeed are you \u2013 a mere human being \u2013 to talk back to God?16<\/sup> \u00a0Does what is molded say to the molder<\/i><\/b>, <\/i>\u201cWhy have you made me like this?<\/i><\/b>\u201d16<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Has the potter no right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special use and another for ordinary use? \u00a0But what if God, willing to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath prepared for destruction? \u00a0And what if he is willing to make known the wealth of his glory on the objects of mercy that he has prepared beforehand for glory\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But I ask, have they not heard<\/i> (\u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)?17<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 And his answer was, Yes, they have<\/i> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03b3\u03b5<\/a>),18<\/sup><\/a> in the sense that the message has gone out and they were \u201cendowed with the faculty of hearing;\u201d they were \u201cnot deaf.\u201d\u00a0 Their voice has gone out to all the earth<\/i><\/b>, and their words to the ends of the world<\/b><\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But there are other meanings listed in the NET online Bible for \u1f24\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>:\u00a0 \u201c1) to be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf 2) to hear 2b) to attend to, consider what is or has been said 2c) to understand, perceive the sense of what is said 3) to hear something 3a) to perceive by the ear what is announced in one’s presence 3b) to get by hearing learn 3c) a thing comes to one’s ears, to find out, learn 3d) to give ear to a teaching or a teacher 3e) to comprehend, to understand.\u201d\u00a0 I doubt that Paul meant definitions 2b) through 3e), with the possible exception of 3) and\u00a03a).\u00a0 What they lacked was that \u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (word of Christ)<\/p>\n

<\/a>But again I ask, didn\u2019t Israel understand<\/i> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>)? \u00a0First Moses<\/a> says,<\/i> \u201cI will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with<\/a> a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger<\/i><\/b>.\u201d \u00a0And Isaiah is even bold enough to say, <\/i>\u201cI was found by<\/a> those who did not seek me; I became well known to those who did not ask for me<\/i><\/b>.\u201d20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here Paul allowed the expected negative response to his question to stand, and reinforced his first question:\u00a0 Yes, they were told what to expect by Moses and Isaiah, but no, they did not understand the message<\/a>.\u00a0 For ignoring<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> literally, being ignorant of<\/i>) the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God\u2019s righteousness<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But about Israel<\/i> [Isaiah] says,<\/i> Paul concluded, \u201cAll day long I held out my hands to this disobedient <\/i><\/b>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) and stubborn <\/i><\/b>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) people!<\/i><\/b>\u201d22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ll conclude this essay with the definitions from the NET online Bible.<\/p>\n
