{"id":20337,"date":"2023-02-26T15:32:36","date_gmt":"2023-02-26T21:32:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=20337"},"modified":"2023-05-15T11:22:09","modified_gmt":"2023-05-15T16:22:09","slug":"the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=20337","title":{"rendered":"The Lost Son of Perdition, Part 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is a continuation of my consideration of God\u2019s love for Satan revealed in the book of Job: the Lord (<i>Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>, <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3068\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a><\/span>) <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Job+1:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allowed<\/a> Satan to carry out his scientific experiment on Job, <i>a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Satan had a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/08\/08\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-9\/#_hypothesis\">hypothesis<\/a> why Job feared God, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/08\/08\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-9\/#_test\">test<\/a> for that hypothesis. But when the experiment was over Job didn&#8217;t curse God to his face as Satan\u2019s test had predicted (Job 1:20-22 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Then Job got up and tore his robe. He shaved his head, and then he threw himself down with his face to the ground <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/08\/08\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-9\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>].<\/em> He said, \u201cNaked I came from my mother\u2019s womb, and naked I will return there. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. He said he would have gotten the result he desired, if not for the Lord&#8217;s arbitrary condition placed on his test. The Lord had said to Satan (Job 1:12b NET [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All right then, everything he has is in your power. Is it simply who He is <i>because God is love<\/i>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> Was He demonstrating his superiority? Was He leading Satan to <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+2:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repentance<\/a>? Or was He goading Satan to store <i>up wrath for <\/i>[himself] <i>in the day of wrath, when God\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/03\/28\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-2\/#_ftn20\">righteous judgment<\/a> is revealed<\/i>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I also admit to being confused about Satan&#8217;s hypothesis at this point: <i>Is it for nothing that Job fears God? <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<i> Have you not made a hedge around him<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/10\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-6\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>] to shield him from disease? It seems even less likely to me now that Satan was conducting a scientific experiment to ascertain why\/how Job <i>was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> I&#8217;m thinking that Satan just wanted Job to curse God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I, on the other hand, am more interested in how Job <i>was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> even when Satan by the Lord&#8217;s leave took everything from him. Though I do think the literary form of Job is drama, I believe the story is true. But as drama, Job&#8217;s wife is the first <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/search?q=everyman+definition&amp;cvid=bcb263395ed0497ab5d5abb5be67ab68&amp;aqs=edge.1.0l9.6329j0j1&amp;pglt=41&amp;FORM=ANNTA1&amp;PC=U531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">everyman<\/a><\/i> character one encounters. She reacts more like what Satan claimed to expect from his scientific experiment on Job, not because she is female but because she is human. I say \u201cclaimed\u201d because Satan (Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diab.html#diabolos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f71\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) is a liar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m becoming more and more convinced that Satan already knew that Job <i>was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> because Job <i>believed the Lord, and the Lord credited it as righteousness to him<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> Satan already knew, even if he held onto some vague hope, that because of the power of the Lord&#8217;s credited righteousness there was nothing he could do to cause Job to curse God. Satan&#8217;s actual intent was to baffle us with misdirection, and to terrorize us with all he would do to us if we believed the Lord and the Lord credited it as righteousness to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Job&#8217;s wife sounds like Satan because <i>everyman <\/i>is <i>from <\/i>[their] <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn9\">father<\/a> the devil, and <\/i>[we] <i>want to do what <\/i>[our] <i>father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn10\">not<\/a> uphold the truth because there is no truth in him. All this demonstrates perhaps is that the rabbis wrote better fiction. He accepts what has happened to him as evil from the hand of God (Septuagint: <i>of the Lord<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ku.html#kuriou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>). He seems oblivious to Satan&#8217;s part in any of it. I wondered briefly whether Job thought of Satan as one of the gods. The rabbis who translated the Septuagint seem to have anticipated that question and answered it in the negative by translating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h430\/nlt\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (<i>&#8216;\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>) <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ku.html#kuriou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> here rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qeou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>. But Job&#8217;s theology was absolutely correct since Satan could do nothing without the Lord&#8217;s permission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Job&#8217;s wife, especially in the Masoretic text, seems to believe that Job&#8217;s blamelessness is a personal achievement, a righteousness derived from law: Job still holds firmly to his integrity. But Job&#8217;s acceptance of both good and evil from the hand of the Lord sounds more to me like the fruit of <i>a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> so many years before <i>the Word became flesh and took up residence among us<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lord boasts about Job: <i>There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> The Lord has every right to boast. Job&#8217;s righteousness is the Lord&#8217;s handiwork. Job does not boast: <i>The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. I want to continue to study the book of Job in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/17\/nothing-true-part-1\/\">another essay<\/a> series, but here I&#8217;ll sum up a bit. This side excursion into the book of Job began for me with a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/09\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-5\/#_who\">question<\/a>: Who did Jesus command, <i>\u201cWhat you are about to do, do quickly.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/02\/26\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-10\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The narrative is quite clear that Jesus spoke to Judas Iscariot. But right before Jesus spoke those words, John also made it clear that Satan (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/sa.html#satanas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>) had entered into Judas. In the book of Job Satan needed the Lord&#8217;s permission to do anything to Job. Was, <i>What you are about to do, do quickly<\/i>, Jesus&#8217; permission? <i>I lay down my life, so that I may take it back again<\/i>, Jesus said. <i>No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>)<i>. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again.
